My wife, son and I decided to try the food at El Burrito for a second time (we first tried it last time we lived in the area about 4 years ago, and vowed we would never return). So on a recent evening, we stopped in for what we thought was going to be dinner; Boy were we wrong. Before I bring you along on our journey to what was arguably the most profound bastardization of Mexican cuisine I've ever encountered, I'd like to note the staff was very pleasant and we had no issues with service. Now the "food"....where do I begin? I ordered a burrito which comes standard with what seemed to be a half gallon of melted cheese they call queso (queso simply means cheese in Spanish btw, and this melted amalgamation of horror would never be found in any real Mexican kitchen). Inside was a heaping pile of nothingness, meaning I it was filled wIth every cheap condiment(rice, beans, more rice, some more beans) and literally no steak, a truly remarkable bargain for $11.95. My wife ordered a burrito bowl, which needless to say was equally awful. The lettuce was old, the beans appeared to be mixed with super glue at a 50/50 ratio and beared no semblance to what refried beans are supposed to look or taste like, and the pork was surprisingly edible, but again severely lacking in quantity. The final and most egregious violation of hundreds of years of Mexican culture came in the form of my son's quesadilla. This was no ordinary quesadilla folks; this was something I barley have the ability to describe, but perhaps is best described by averring the same genius that wrote the original Exorcist movie would have been terrified of the thought of consuming this treacherous excuse for edible food (see picture). A floppy, greasy, and discolored tortilla enrobed a hot pile of what looked like roadkill was spackled with and overdose of the afore mentioned "queso" to form what quite possibly was the most off-putting thing I've ever laid eyes on. I so wanted this place to be good. Sometimes, that cheap Mexican restaurant food just sounds good to me. My expectations aren't high - I'm expecting the usual cheap Mexican food. I don't know how - but this place basically messed up virtually everything. The chips were stale. The food took a long time to arrive (and it wasn't full). The food was tasteless, dried out, and just oddly awful. I'm not even sure how you can mess it up that badly. Then, even though I was sitting at the bar, and the bartender was right there - it still took him a full 15 minutes to run my credit card so I could leave! I'm stunned by any bad reviews dealing with either the food flavor/quality or the service. We've been coming here since we moved to Carrollton in March and have been back almost once a week. Tony and Patty couldn't be nicer, more friendly, or better accommodating!!! Always a pleasure to talk with them when we're here and always a good experience. These guys are absolutely fantastic. And the food!!! I've never ordered the same thing twice and haven't had a bad dish yet! Their homemade salsas are so incredible we routinely buy extra and take them home. So since we just moved into the neighborhood, we haven't been able to dine-in or eat off their dinner menu. We were able to catch their food truck that sits in the neighborhood though. The menu was pretty simple with your choice of steak, chicken, or pork carnitas in a burrito, taco, or burrito bowl (all of which were $10 and included a soda). My husband literally drove to the truck and came back with 3 burritos within 12 minutes! Not kidding. Either the dinner rush hadn't started or those people are super efficient. Whatever it was, I wasn't complaining. Their signature "Good Ass Burrito" was a good sized portion but my husband and I absolutely demolished it because it was so good. It came with our choice of 2 condiments, so we picked queso and cilantro creama. I found the sauces to be really messy and not very convenient to put on the burrito but they are a good option for people who want a little more oomph to their entrees. My family visited El Burrito and found a relatively empty house for a weekend. Their staff of one waiter and the owner were unable to keep up with three tables. The owner brought us chips and salsa, but never any water. We had to grab their only other non-family employee to get us water and at that it took an additional 10 minutes before it showed up. While the food was mediocre at best, what disturbed me the most was the dismissive way the owner blew off my "loyalty" punch card. El Burrito offers a loyalty punch card to their customers to encourage return business. While it is not uncommon in the restaurant world to offer these cards, they are the only ones that I know that place an expiration date on them. The owner did not have any new loyalty cards to offer me and she also refused to punch my old card or make any concessions to honor my "expired" loyalty card in the future. What I take away from this is the owners of El Burrito don't care about my loyalty. Consequently, I took my "expired loyalty" cards home with me and promptly trashed them and vowed never to return to El Burrito. I'm looking forward to eating at any other mexican restaurant, but El Burrito in the future. read more

We walked in, were given menus, and placed our orders just like any other restaurant. We ended up waiting almost an hour to get our food, the beans looked like asphalt, and we were rarely checked on. Shortly before we were ready to leave, the waitress brought us "our" bill. It didn't actually belong to us, and after telling a waiter near the entrance, we were given another bill, paid, and left. I wouldn't reccomend this place for children or people who dont have much patience, hopefully they were just having a bad day. read more

Being from Southern California I am a Mexican food junkie. Out of every place we have tried in Hampton Roads this has by far been the best! It's a quaint family owned joint with good food and decent prices. The staff is always very friendly and the food...well it's just good Mexican food. They didn't even laugh at me when I asked them to put French fries in my burrito to make if Cali style for me. They have a punch card program also where you purchase so many entrees and get one free which is fabulous for loyal patrons. Worst Mexican experience ever! When we sat down the server said they didn't have any chips but that they were "coming." So we ordered and got our food before she said that they had just gotten the chips to the restaurant and still had to make them... We didn't get chips until we were done with our meals, at which point we didn't feel like eating them. Service, menu and quality of food were extremely disappointing. Margaritas were boasted to be, in an almost condescending manner to be "top shelf". Perhaps that's misspoken as overpriced and poorly done. The chicken was spongy and obviously a low end, previously frozen, meat like substance that was drowned in cumin. I assume that's an attempt at seasoning that failed. The refried beans were obviously canned, and likely weren't ever beans.....at any point. Hoping this is a temporary set back for these folks well see. Tried them again today after all it had been awhile and it was raining so i wanted some Mexican comfort food. Ordered my normal the speedy with beans (enchilada, taco and beans) for lunch and all was not well. As usual the salsa and white sauce was great but the chips seemed stale i asked and got fresh chips pronto. The meal was another story, the taco shell was placed into the beans which made it soggy and threw me off for the whole meal, the beans had not been stirred in along time so they had that hard crunchiness in spots that was eh. How about order correct in the first place? A tiny bit of humility when someone asks you to fix an issue?...Instead of being an indignant rage monster to customers. I called and ordered the cheese enchilada meal and a red salsa to go. After paying I realized there were no chips with my salsa so I asked of there were supposed to be. The guy tells me no.
