Perfect spot for a date night the seating was nice with booth that high top board head for private dining giving that intimate atmosphere to it And traditional Mexican cuisine . Services was amazing and very fast with getting the drinks and food out on time we tried their Chicharrones with guacamole nice and crunchy with some heat and freshness. For drinks my husband got large hurricane and I got the medium sangria margarita both were really good. I had heard good things about so I stopped on. Parking is ample, however the two main entry points on Jefferson come up quickly. The interior is nice with plenty of booths with blue LED lighting trim, nothing like the Applebees this building was. My food was very good from the start with fresh chips and both red and white sauce to join my seafood Chimichangas along with an adult beverage. And while no flan I did enjoy a nicely done fried ice cream. Price was good for the quality and quantity. Service was efficient and polite, and what I determined was the manager checked on me. Overall this place is a nice change from some other "chain" Tex/Mex restaurants so I recommend you give a local place a try. read more

They have been open for two days and already they made the list of restaurants to visit when we are on this side. They opened February 1. From what I have read so many were excited for this restaurant to open. I can see why. There were some items not available like alcohol but that was no problem. We all have to work out some kinks when just starting out especially on day 2. The staff were so friendly and attentive the whole time. It was great to see some of their friends and family come out and support their opening. The food was so good. I got my normal, fajitas. They were great and I loved the amount of rice, sour cream ect. My husband enjoyed his nachos. My daughter loved her birria tacos as well. No complaints at all. I loved the vibe as well. We decided we wanted to try a New Mexican place and headed to Mezcal. The inside is very classy. Booths are separated by high back leather seat dividers. The lighting is pretty but could be moved up a bit higher to be out of eye line. I just scooted over to the edge of the booth so it wasn't so bright. We were seated promptly but no one was at the host desk when we arrived. It had the same layout of the old Applebees with the bar in the middle lower level with booths elevated around the sides. $11 seemed like a lot for guacamole so we passed on that. The chips tasted fresh and the salsa and white sauce was good. I had a skinny margarita with fresh juice and it was tasty but didn't pack the same buzz I get at our normal Mexican spot. My hubby has had Molecajete bowl that came with a side of rice and beans. It normally comes with chicken, steak and shrimp but her skipped the seafood. It also came with cactus in and I tried some cactus. The texture is a bit like a bell pepper a little tougher on the outside with a pulpy middle. I really enjoyed the bit of steak I tried and the ground beef at the bottom was great with chips. I had the pork belly tacos which you add your own pineapple, cabbage and sauce to. Very good. We decided to try this restaurant. The inside looked nice. They had to put two tables together to accommodate the six of us. The service was good and the presentation of the food but for us that's where it ended. Usually when we go to Mexican restaurants, they always serve salsa and chips while you wait for your food. This place did not offer that you had to pay for it.I ordered chimichanga with extra rice. Nothing stood out for me as tasting spectacular. It was mediocre compared to other places I've been. We also ordered the fajitas and the shrimp tasted rubbery didn't seem like they were cooked fresh. I don't think we'll come back here because we've gone to other Mexican restaurants that we felt the food stood out better. read more

This place is really good. Probably the best Mexican restaurant in this immediate area! Staff was super friendly and the service was excellent. To be fair it was a Thursday at 530 so it wasn't crazy busy but it probably 40% full and people were starting to arrive more and more. Very clean and the decor was really nice. They had a bar, high top booths, tables, and low booths. The food was super fresh and very good. They give you chips, salads, and white dip. The chips were warm and fresh, just made. The salsa was very good and I think it had some fresh basil or some other different ingredient than normal salsas. I don't like the white dip so I didn't try it. We got the 3 dip trio which was queso, guacamole, and pic de gallo. All three of them were really good. I ordered the asada tacos and again, amazing. The steak was very well seasoned and had a great texture. The amount in each taco was perfect. They came with onions and cilantro with limes and hot sauce on the side. I like really hot sauce and this one was perfect. Personally I would have liked a little hotter but most people wouldn't. It had a great kick and a nice smoky flavor too. Very impressed. Let me start by saying I lived in San Diego for 10 years, so I was spoiled by authentic and delicious Mexican cuisine. Mezcal was decent but nothing special. It is nicely decorated, although the bare plywood next to my booth could use a coat of paint. The seating is laid out nicely and it wasn't obnoxiously loud. I actually had nice dinner conversation with my kids because we could hear one another. Service was fine. He didn't introduce himself so I don't know his name, but he was fairly attentive and refilled our glasses in a timely way. Our meals all came out at different times though. My son was almost done eating by the time my daughter's meal arrived. We did get the guacamole, pico de gallo, and queso with chips. It was pricier than I expected but all three were tasty. Also, a refill on the chips was $1. That was a surprise. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant where I was charged for a refill on a bowl of chips. I ordered the Mexican sushi. It was ok. I didn't eat all of it though. It just wasn't that great. My son had carne asada and the meat was cooked as he liked but the meat was really fatty. He couldn't eat about 1/3 of the meat because it was just fat. My daughter had enchiladas. The tortillas were not warmed all the way through so she ate the filling without the tortillas. Would I make a special trip to eat here again? No. If a group of friends planned to meet here, I might go. To me it was just average. That's not to say it was bad. It was just ok to us. read more

Walking in, the food smelt great and the ambiance is really cool and modern. We started out with the guacamole which was spicey the way I like it. I had the supreme enchiladas, thr ground beef and chicken where well seasoned which I find lacking in similar mexican restaurants so that was refreshing. Wifey had the asada tacos which she enjoyed! Nope...the food is not good. The Southwest salad made no sense. It had baby corn, sunflower seeds, greasy tortilla strips and cubed, not shredded cheese. The grilled chicken on top of the salad had fake grill marks and an almost rubbery texture. The salad came with a tiny cup of watered down ranch dressing. One bite and I was disgusted. Everything is mediocre. The drinks were pretty good, the steak was cooked to pretty good medium-rare, but the flavor was scuffed. My tiny sirloin was maybe 8 slices, and 3 of them were difficult to chew, 1 of which I had to spit out. The steak was also served with complimentary asparagus and cherry tomatoes on the plate, both of which were very tough. The broccoli was tough and unappealing. The Mexican rice was barely Mexican. And the prices are extraordinarily too high, especially for the quality. This value is unacceptable, and I see why their lot was mostly empty. It is not worthwhile. Long in depth review, When we first walked in our initial laugh was that we felt extremely underdressed for how well renovated the interior was. It felt like a Friday night formal kind of vibe but in reality it's super casual. The service throughout the night was fast and attentive. It felt like everyone wanted to refill my drink it never once ran dry. The food from chips and salsa to Mexican sushi... yes Mexican sushi.. was extremely good. Our only grit is that the ceviche was more of a salsa than a chunky dish like we're used to preparing and eating. Overall the star of the night was the Mixed fajitas, chicken nachos, and Mexican sushi. The pricing is seriously competitive to all the other Mexican restaurants in our area, that includes you Catrin Cantina. This place is dangerous and I'm beyond glad somebody turned the gross Applebees into something I will definitely be coming back again for. The google reviews that are low are people who either find ways to complain or are have bad taste buds. Everything is seasoned with Tex-Mex inspiration which is not a negative at all. Last night my husband and I enjoyed dinner at Mezcal Mexican Cuisine, a new restaurant that opened two months ago in the old Applebee's on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. Jhony, our server, was especially attentive, friendly, and helpful. The restaurant was clean and the atmosphere was relaxing and lovely. I loved the white cushioned highbacked seating and subtle, peaceful blue lighting. The music was very nice, as well, and not overly loud, and there were TVs located within our view. After we were seated, we were greeted pleasantly by Jhony and were handed menus and served our drinks, but no chips or salsas. I asked if these were served and was told that they were for an extra one-dollar charge, which was a little surprise. We ordered a bowl and were glad we did; we thought that the tortilla chips were especially good; they were served very warm and extra crunchy! A little red salsa and a spicy hot white salsa accompanied the chips, however, the red salsa did not taste homemade and was rather bland; we think that the red salsa could have been made more zesty and flavorful, and that both portions offered of red and white salsas could have been more generous. Though shorter than most, the menu had an interesting and attractive selection compared to all of the Mexican restaurants we've frequented over the years. We both ordered the Southwest Salad and we were surprised by its unique ingredients and beautiful presentation. Halved cherry tomatoes, nicely seasoned toasted pepitas, creamy cubes of colby Jack cheese, black beans, marinated spiced baby corns, extra crispy tortilla strips, and a generous serving of well-seasoned grilled chicken strips were served on a bed of fresh mixed greens along with a vinegar and oil dressing and a hot dressing. After eating the beautiful, delicious salad, I was glad we did not overdo ourselves on the tortilla chips served before our entrée, as too many would have spoiled some of our appetite! We are used to gorging ourselves at other Mexican restaurants, but then we leave feeling a little too full. Perhaps that was why the chips were less emphasized. We were very pleased with the food, the elegant dining atmosphere and experience, and the service offered by Jhony; we definitely will return! Jhony was very personable and returned to check on us and satisfactorily tend our table throughout our meal There were a variety of other items on the menu that looked intriguing; the strawberry salad that was filled with sundry fresh ingredients also caught my eye, and Jhony mentioned that it was a best-seller all of that day. Some of the plates were offered with a choice of extra sides. There were even Mexican sushi (!) and salmon, fajitas, and carnitas. We noticed that there was also a reasonably priced lunch menu available. One more observance I want to add regarding our kind server, Jhony: a customer accidentally dropped some white salsas, which splattered down the base of the bar and onto the floor. There were no rolled eyes or excessive clamor or drama by the staff. Jhony calmly and immediately stepped in, addressing the customer politely as an 'Amigo.' He quietly assured him in what could have otherwise been an embarrassing situation, quickly bending down himself to wipe it up. The man responded gratefully and continued enjoying his meal and the salsas were replaced. Situations as these in a restaurant can speedily reveal the true attitude of staff and their genuine willingness to serve. Polite and personable service of any kind can be difficult to find these days, but it usually leaves a lasting impression with customers when noticed and contributes the most to the whole dining experience! read more

Their habanero salsa is no joke, hot and delicious. I ordered birria nachos, which were excellent. My wife ordered some sort of spicy shrimp dish, and while it was indeed excellent, she was very frustrated that the shells were still on and intact. Understanding that the shells help lock in the flavor, we get it in that regard however, they were cooked in a chili oil or something and held the heat of a dying sun for quite a while. It would be awesome if they could at least devein the shrimp and cut the shell up the middle for easier removal. 9.5/10, will for sure go again. read more

Never anyone there (that should be the first red flag). The menu was totally different and way overpriced. Service not good. Food was not good. Restaurant was freezing inside and music too loud. Since we were the only patrons one would think they would rectify the problem without question.... Nope. Never again. The good reviews cannot possibly be genuine. Best Mexican food we've had in Virginia. We are from Southern California with family from Mexico and we are very picky when it comes to Mexican food. We have ordered twice, once in the restaurant and now again for pick up and both times we have had timely, excellent service. Restaurant ambience and bar were great! Our first time in restaurant was right after opening and my only minor complaint was that the tacos had great flavor but were just a touch dry and the salsa had absolutely no spice. Everything else was perfect and this time the salsa is fantastic! I'm not sure if they have added a hot salsa upon request but the red salsa now has a great mild pepper flavor, just enough to complement the food without sending gringos running for their drinks.
