I said no I'm sorry my friend ordered thee beef mexicana . He kept arguing with me???? I could not belive it ! I finally said you know what take this back I do not want anything !!! This is a fun little place with nice atmosphere - colorful with nice decorative touches to get you in the mood for your food. Six of us dined on a Sunday at noon. PRICES: quite modest, an excellent value. Most meals are $8-9. Our bill was $42 plus tip. FRESHNESS/ QUALITY: Excellent overall. Light, fluffy Mexican rice, fresh tortilla chips, 5 of the 6 in our party loved every bite, but our young man was deeply unhappy with his chicken strip meal. (Will discuss menu items below.) SERVICE: Tolerable, considering the excellent food, but needs better planning for busy meal periods. Not enough wait staff for a Sunday noon meal, waiters were stretched too thin to properly stop by their tables more than a couple of times through the entire 45 minutes we were there. Some of our meals came out of the kitchen 15 minutes after ordering; the vegetarian fajitas took 25 minutes. One of our group ordered a Burrito Gordo, which finally arrived some 35 minutes into the meal, by which time everyone else had mostly finished eating. None of this was intentional I'm sure, but the service is probably better when the place is less crowded. MEALS ORDERED: vegetarian fajitas, burrito gordo, enchiladas suiza w hamburger, combination #10, Quesadilla, chicken strips. All Mexican entrees were superb. The kids chicken dinner was processed pieces/parts; according to our 7th grader, worse than McDonalds. (They need to tell whoever orders from the Sysco truck to spend an extra .75 cents per portion and get real breaded chicken strips instead. The kids DO get to vote on the restaurant choices in most families.) The menu could be improved by the addition of a couple of Pesco (fish) dishes. Vegetarian/ Pescetarian choices here are limited to refried beans (no whole), cheese enchiladas or vegetarian fajitas, none of which are low fat, heart healthy meals. Having said that, the vegetarian fajitas were one of the best I've had. (Yes, I am that oddball who searches for healthy entrees at family owned Mexican restaurants!) All in all we were impressed with the food, but our young man will probably vote no to stopping here next time we come through Clinton, at least until he grows out of chicken strip meals. read more

The salsa was outstanding. It gave us great expectations for exceptional food. I had Chili Verde and my wife had Carnitas. I rate the food was good, but not excellent. The pork in both dishes was extremely tender but the Carnitas lacked the crispiness that would have made them outstanding. The portions were generous, especially the Carnitas. Clinton is a small town. You never know... eating out can be an adventure in any town. So a warm day called me to Camino. Service is always good at Mexican restaurants to me, and the folks at Camino were friendly without exception. I received advice from my server and ordered the Chile Relleno plate. They use Poblano peppers here... no pretender Anaheim peppers. Mine were quite good. The only thing that could have been better was the batter, which could have bean lighter and more delicate. But I often scrape my batter away to get to those awesome Poblanos anyway! The rice was meh... and that is normal. The beans were creamy and seasoned lightly... I liked them on their own. But here's a tip for you. I ordered mine with a side of chorizo to throw on them... and I threw it on the rice, too. So I went from meh rice and good beans to good rice and awesome beans. Yes. Si. Yes. As a native Clintonian, it's always nice to go back and see a newish restaurant seeing success. El Camino is great! The food is mostly authentic, although I'd love it even more if they added mole or cactus to the menu. But I will stop complaining and get to the good stuff. They love their cheese here, which can be really good, and really bad. Good for my tastebuds, bad for my waistline. If I'm really feeling like I need a heartburn, I go for the pollo michoacano, which is a thin chicken breast topped with chorizo and cheese. I'm not saying to avoid it - in fact, it's probably the thing I get most consistently when visiting here - but it's not for the weak of stomach. I've also had the fajitas quite a few times - the chicken is soft, the steak is medium rare with a little pink inside, and the veggies are crispy and not soggy. Exactly what you want in fajitas. Tip: Order the queso dip before your meal comes. It's worth the extra calories, and to me, tastes like mac and cheese. Deeeeelish. El Camino is always clean. Service is usually quick and always friendly; things can slow down a bit during really busy times. In all likliehood, you'll miss a "busy time" though, because they're typically short. Great service, TOP NOTCH drinks (especially the 'ritas) and easy parking ensure that El Camino is the only place in Clinton where I satisfy my craving for Mexican food. Ole! read more

This was horrible. From the second we walked in the door. The chips tasted like they had been fried in burnt oil. My beer was unopened when the waiter brought to the table and then couldn't twist off the cap! The cheese dip was lackluster and lukewarm which we couldn't eat anyway because the second basket of chips also tasted burnt. The onions were raw when they should have been sautéed with the steak. Driving through town and we saw this was had good reviews. I had a chicken fajita quesadilla. It was good, but not great. I really wanted a fish fajita quesadilla, but apparently the kitchen was unwilling to comply with my request....even though they have tons of fish on the menu. Oh well. I love this restaurant! I live 90 miles from here, but take every opportunity to stop here. I occasionally travel to KC on business and stopped here first on my return trip. The service is amazing--very friendly and quick. The food is fantastic. Like the options of seafood, chicken or beef. Noticed there are several vegetarian options as well. Finally got the opportunity to bring my husband with me tonight. Since he's driving, I got to try the margarita which was equally as good as the food. El Camino Real is literally my favorite place to eat. Every time we're in town we come and eat here (usually more than once). Best food, hands down, that I've ever had. Really good food & service! As far as "authentic" maybe.. maybe not but I know the margarita's & drinks are on point b/c after one customers couldn't even hold their heads up! The tequila comes out of this huge barrel which I thought was cool. The cheese dip & salsa was delicious! I ordered the fajita's so it's pretty hard to screw those up but of course the onions, green peppers, chicken served in a sizzling hot skillet to our table was picturesque. My fajita's were served with re fried beans w/mozzarella cheese melted atop, gaucamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomato & Mexican rice. Perfect o after our long 3 hour drive! I'll definitely go back if we are hungry as we drive through Clinton from Springfield! For sure!
