I called a couple of other places I found on Yelp first, one was closed (on a Frday at 3:00 pm) and the other guy wanted to give me $100 off spot pricing which is a joke, must have thought he was buying stolen gold or something???? After my grandparents passed away, I inherited various coins and jewelry from the pawn shop they used to own. Much of the jewelry was scrap bits, broken, or just things I wouldn't use or wear so I decided to sell most of it. I also had no idea what to do with so many coins, then I found El Cerrito Coin Exchange. Owner John, his daughter Monique, and their family were very nice, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the selling process. I brought various coins and jewelry in here for a couple years while I slowly sold things off. I didn't know much about the coins at all and they helped me understand which ones I should keep, which ones I could sell for melt value, and which ones were worth more than just the metal melt (rare coins, etc). They are always very honest and trustworthy and that is so important when selling things like jewelry and coins. They are very patient and always took their time looking over everything, even when I would bring in big bags of unsorted coins. They quoted him $150 an ounce more than Albany! I have been selling portions of an inherited silver coin colletion at El Cerrito Coin Exchange over the past few months. Briefly put, the man and woman who run the place are honest, informative, and friendly. The folks at El Cerrito Coin Exchange assess collector's coins for condition and identify coins that are valuable only for their silver content. They use the latest coin collectors guide books to determine purchsing value of collectors coins and they base silver purchase amounts on the daily (or at least very recent) silver spot price. They take a fair margin from the value of the coins, which in my experience has ranged from 9% to 14%. I started with very little knowledge of coins. I did some research on my own before visiting El Cerrito Coin Exchange, but each time I go I have more questions. They answer all my questions helpfully. They spent a fair amount of time going through books and bags of coins with me and I feel confident that I've gotten a fair price for everything I've taken in. When one coin I brought couldn't be identified as a high value coin due to heavy wear, they suggested I keep the coin in case I should find some other shop that could. I plan to take more coins to them in the future and I highly reccommend them. read more

After leaving Albany Coin Exchange the other day, I made a stop at the cleaners and then drove over to the El Cerrito Coin Exchange. I've driven by it almost daily for years but had never stopped in. I wanted to see what they would offer for my old wedding ring and I remembered Rinky having given them an excellent review. I found a parking space right in front and they buzzed me in before I even had a chance to ring the doorbell. I was warmly welcomed. I explained to John what I wanted and he turned me over to Monique. She assessed the gold content of my ring, as had the woman in Albany, although less vigorously. She offered me $96, $21 more than I had been offered in Albany just a few minutes before. I decided to take it and was paid in cash, which I hadn't expected. Most important, I was treated warmly and kindly. If I ever have more gold or coins to divest myself of I will come here. read more
