Awful. Not only is the food absolutely bland, with no flavor. But when they make something incorrectly and you call to have it replaced they are so rude. It's like businesses anymore don't even act like the customer matters, it's like they can be rude and act like your the issue. I will never ever come here again. Everything here is always consistent. Their chips and salsa are really good. I love their street tacos which are only a couple bucks each. Their service is always good and I've eaten here several times and been perfectly satisfied. Probably one of the best places to eat in Hillsdale. read more

This restaurant is typical of the food offered here in Hillsdale. It is a charming spot and the food is serviceable but by no means authentic Mexican food. It is Mexican food in the same way Olive Garden is Italian. They have the typical decor and they have items on the menu that sound like they should be representative of Mexican food...and then you taste it and are left wondering what went wrong. I have eaten here perhaps ten times and each time I wonder why I bother. The orders are frequently delivered to the table missing some aspect of what it was you actually ordered. The main draw for El Cerrito is that it is really the only Mexican joint in town. Fortunately, it redeems itself, with a few quirks. My girlfriend adores this place, and at one point I ate here nearly once a week for 3 months. My wallet didn't complain ($6-$10/person) nor did my stomach. My favorites are the Chimichanga, with a crispy deep-fried shell, and the Burrito Grande (extremely large). The menu is a bit odd - if you order a chile relleno, you will receive huevos rancheros... but they are consistently wrong on this. Simply ordering a chile poblano will remedy the situation. Most dishes are served with the generic (and somewhat bland) beans and rice that would be expected of any old Mexican restaurant. One highlight - the salsa here is fresh and DIVINE. They load it with fresh cilantro and the flavor is remarkable. The chips are fresh and usually cooked correctly. Recommended. read more

I am very disappointed in El Cerrito today.... I went in before the church crowd at 11:55am .... by 12:20 I still had not been waited on... they finally brought my chips and salsa after about 10 minutes of arriving... but still no service after that. I did offer to pay for my chips and salsa before I left.... they offered to get me something to go... which insulted me.... if I wanted it to go I would not have waited for service inside.... they also offered me a gift certificate... We went here for Mothers Day. The service was phenomenal. We received our food very quickly. Everything was delicious. We highly recommend the cheesecake chimichanga for dessert. When we ordered, we were told they it would be about 15 minutes. Although they were not particularly busy, our food finally arrived over 45 minutes later, and was cold. It obviously had been sitting somewhere for many minutes. Two of the four orders were wrong (beef instead of chicken) and sides were missing, but by then, people weren't going to send it back and start the wait anew. Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant... We were over charged $12 on our order! We we're laughed at when we asked about the price.... Then laughed at again to add insult to injury. They obviously knew their online menu was wrong previous to my order. It was worse to find the person handling front counter also handling food prep. I do not trust the food we purchased for carry out. The staff was handling their personal phones then getting food out. There was no hand washing going on... My favorite Mexican restaurant in Hillsdale! The food is always delicious and the portions are big. The beef burritos are made with real beef chunks not ground hamburger. The food was really good but I only gave the restaurant 4 stars because they use a processed, shredded cheese. Muenster or something equivalent would be so much better. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Great atmosphere and decor. Loved the chips and the salsa (although I found the salsa a little too salty). The horchata was great and it came in a very large glass mug. My wife had the chorizo omelette and I had the lunch special #1. I will definitely go back and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Mexican food. read more
