Unfortunately our first experience at El Charolais was less than satisfactory all based on the level of service. For me, I can usually tell immediately upon being greeted at the table by wait staff what to expect. In this case we were an annoyance from the moment our drink order was taken. Too bad since the food was actually quite good. Return trip? Probably for the food,but the staff will have to step it up or my money goes somewhere else. read more

The best ...seriously best Mexican food I ever have had. Consistent on how delicious each meal I have had over 3 years. My favorite is the Pollo Loco and there is nothing I can say but Yummy. Suggested by a local family member, this restaurant was a haven for this traveling NM family. Everything from the decor to the guacamole was reminiscent of home. Our family was seated quickly and asked for our drink preferences. They brought out the chips and salsa, and we ordered guacamole. The food was flavorful, and the service was excellent. The Supreme Salad was a little much for my son, both in size and spice, but otherwise, our meals were beyond satisfactory. The server kept our tea full, and made sure we were well taken care of. The salsa was flavorful and the guacamole was fresh and tasted of garlic (yum). I especially enjoyed the decor in the restroom: bright Iime, brightening the room considerably. read more

Service can be slow (but always super nice!) but that's because it's usually a Friday night or Happy Hour day that I end up going. That's totally normal. My food has always been good & drinks are phenomenal! My only issue is that my food has been a little colder than I'd like. read more

VERY DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER! We chose El Charolais for my 60th birthday dinner last evening. For my birthday, I ordered a Margarita with a celebratory side shot of Tequila! As we were shuffling plates around when our waitress brought the food to the table, the shot glass was knocked over- by the waitress accidentally. We fully expected the tequila to be replaced but to our surprise we were told that they would not replace it! We asked our server to please have her Manager come over to speak to us, but our request was again refused- to replace the tequila shot that was knocked over (not by me or my party). After our protest, we were informed that they would take it off our bill but our waitress would have to pay for the shot out of her own money. We were absolutely not okay with that. Mistakes happen and we feel as though the company should not treat their employees this way. Needless to say, we compensated the waitress but we will not be coming back to this restaurant again... I lost my patron - you lost a dedicated patron. read more

I absolutely love the food here, but when I tried online ordering they did not honor the prices listed on their website. When I arrived to pay for and pick up my food, I gave the cashier my card, assuming i would be paying the price I was told when ordering on their website, but when I was given the receipt to sign, my $9.54 meals turned into $19.50 meals. I looked at the cashiers computer screen and it listed the total as $9.54 but she still charged me $19.50. When I asked her to cancel the charge and refund the card she refused to do so. I love this restaurant, but I am very unhappy with how they handled this situation. They should have either honored the price I was told through the website they set up, or allowed me to do a refund on the purchase. I expected better from a local restaurant. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant! They do a great job with the traditional favorites, but they blew me away with their authentic menu items. Try the lengua taco, it is tender and delicious. The sopes are another must-have. They are a cornmeal base that was soft inside but crunchy on the edges. They put beans, meat, lettuce and sour cream on top, and they were amazing! Atmosphere: Dated, geared more toward very casual dining. Service: Average service. No complaints. Food: Decent mexican food, I've had better though. I had a chile relleno and a taco. The meat tasted underseasoned and a little overcooked. The chile relleno was good but it was doused with red sauce couldn't really taste the full flavor of it. As the locals would call it EL Kroger. We tend to eat once or twice a week. Being that we live 3 miles for the location, you can't beat the price and food. Food was 4, maybe 5 stars for flavor but presentation and service make it barely 3. We were given a barely full bowl of chips when we were seated and the conservative approach to portions continued through the meal. $9 for Fajita nachos and there wasn't even enough cheese on them to get to half the chips. I love soupy nachos- not dry chips covered in onions and peppers. The waiter refused to bring any extra cheese without extra charge- I asked for the manager and he responded she was up front and we could speak to her later- so I had to walk up front to get her. They of course started speaking in spanish so I don't know what was said by finally upon my insistence she came over and looked and said all the cheese was in the bottom of the plate. She relented and did give me some more cheese for no charge but I've never had to go through such hoops just to get a dish tweaked a bit. It may just be food but when spending $25 on a lunch date there are definitely other options. read more

THIS IS NOT TEX-MEX! Actually, I'm not sure what it is. The chips and salsa (though a tad mild) were fairly authentic but it went downhill from there. The house tequila in my margarita was as smooth as a gravel road. Make sure to ask for an upgrade and pay the extra. The red sauce on my beef burrito and chili relleno tasted strongly of ketchup instead of a sauce with the appropriate Mexican seasonings. The beef was equally lacking in spice. In its own way it was kind of tasty, but Southwestern it was not---perhaps a Deep South version, with the fire and flavor taken out of it. Southwesterners, look elsewhere for your Tex-Mex fix. read more
