This place has its ups and downs, but fortunately the actual food itself was the main up, so it's a solid 4 stars from me for sure! I was even tempted to give it 5, but I do have to admit that the bathrooms being so distant from the eating area (and having so few, for this many customers) was a pretty big downside for my dining party, and it is a little cramped. I felt like I was always in danger of accidentally knocking something out of the staff's hands if I accidentally gestured too big while talking or stuck out my elbow too far. Just terrible. My vegetarian dish was cross-contaminated with chicken pieces, so I sent it back. Enchiladas were cold in the middle. Waiter did not refill drinks or bring the check. I went to the counter to pay and the manager tried to tell me he could not remove the dish I sent back from the check. He said he could only give a partial discount. Great food and service. Not a real fan of Mexican food but this place was delicious. The Mexican steak and cheese was great. We always enjoy Floyd in June. This trip was a total culinary disappointment. Only 2 restaurants open. Outer Space did not have either of the items we ordered. We left. The only other option was El Charro Mexican. We were seated with chips and salsa. No one came to wait on us however parties who came in after us received beverage and food service while servers went in and out right by our table. When we finally ordered the taco salad was floating in a white liquid. Very unappetizing. Enchiladas came without cheese or guacamole. Will not return or suggest! Such a disappointment! read more

We were visiting the cute town of Floyd, Virginia with two sheep dogs on a Tuesday afternoon. We had to overcome two issues; a restaurant open on a Tuesday and an outdoor patio that would allow dogs while we had lunch. El Charro fit the bill! We sat at a cute back patio decorated festively. The staff was very friendly and welcomed the dogs. Hot chips and salsa were served while we reviewed it the menu. It was your typical American-Mexican menu with selections of enchiladas, tacos, burritos, fajitas, chimichangas, etc. made with pork, beef, chicken or seafood. I got the chicken fajitas which were seasoned very well and tasted good. I just wish there were more sautéed onions and peppers with it. Every restaurant makes a little bit different version. The accoutrement tray for the fajitas had refried beans, Mexican rice, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo. I put it all of it on a flour tortilla and opened wide! Delicioso! My friend had a beef burrito and said it was tasty as well. No reviews on the margaritas as we had diet Dr. Peppers. There is a large parking lot behind this restaurant which is located on N. Decent food at a good price point. Nothing was great, but it wasn't bad. Everything was pretty bland. Salsa had no flavor. I asked for a side of jalapeños to spice things up & they were the blandest jalapeños I have ever had...nice and seedy, but no flavor. Beef had no spices either. We ordered some nachos and quesadillas and they were both decent. The food was filling and well-seasoned although I thought the dishes needed some acid for counterbalance. This is where the food tasted a little one-note after several bites and visually just didn't pop on the plate. This is where the salsa from the chips came in handy though to liven it up a little. Cheap beers also a plus. If you're swinging by town and need a place to feed the family efficiently, El Charro Mexican Grill is a good option. El Charro was a life saver!! My daughter was supposed to be married in a garden, but it started sleeting and raining. The friendly staff at El Charro were kind enough to let us use their covered patio to perform the ceremony since we're from out of town and didn't know where else to go. Afterwards, offered us a separate room to celebrate, and even surprised the newlyweds with their version of a wedding cake. It was an adorable heart shaped fried tortilla drizzled in chocolate syrup, whipped cream and sprinkles. Super friendly and the food was delicious! Two stars for food, zero stars for charging my credit card twice and not resolving the problem. The comprehensive menu covers the usual Mexican-American fare. The food arrived quickly. It was pretty flavorless and mushy, about the level of what you might get at a school lunch. The meat in the tacos didn't really taste like anything, and really, it seemed like someone took a vacuum cleaner and sucked any hint of flavor out of the meat, seafood, beans, salsa, and cheese. It was quite an accomplishment in fact. What really peeved me is that they ran my credit card twice. I pointed this out, and the manager/owner said that if I indeed got charged twice, she would credit me. Duplicate charges showed up on my credit card statement, so I called and asked for a credit. She asked me to bring my statement to show her. I live 1 hour away, so this would involve a 2-hour drive. I asked if I could fax it or e-mail it. No dice. I asked if she could look it up in her records and offered to give her the two transaction numbers. No answer. I asked if I could send a copy by snail mail. She said she could not receive snail mail. WHAT?! She took my phone number and said her daughter would call with an e-mail address. Guess what: I never got a call back. Guess what: I will never go back, and I will steer others away from El Charro. read more

The service and food at this restaurant were great. We ordered takeout and I had a margarita and husband had a beer here this past Saturday night. We were there about 9:30pm and they close at 10pm. The servers and manager could not have been more accommodating. We sat on the deck and waited with our drinks, chips, queso dip and salsa. They have really good salsa! The only reason I did not rate them five stars is because we did not eat a meal in the restaurant itself. Also, the only thing that did not impress was the queso dip. If you've ever had really good, fresh Mexican food, you'd know right away that this isn't the place to get it. It's basic, restaurant chain Mexican food that you can get anywhere, really. The food is one thing, the service is quite a separate matter. Wait staff are rude and unpleasant. They act like high school kids, and seem irritated that you are there. Some congregate in the back seating area, in the dark, and gesture, whisper and snicker at/about the customers. Though, most of the time, they're playing on their phones, too occupied by the internet to remember items you've asked for. The atmosphere is just weird and awkward. You feel like you've done something wrong just by being there or for some crazy reason, they don't like you even though there is no earthly reason why that would even be so. It's hard to explain. The food is just okay. Not worth the prices, really. The owners are also impersonal. The older lady that usually cashes you out isn't very friendly either. Maybe they all just hate being there. And if they hate being there.....maybe customers should find a different, more friendly and pleasant place to spend their hard-earned money. Try Blue Ridge Diner or Parkway Grill or American Pie Restaurant or DJs Drive In. Basically, any other place to eat but at this one. You'll have a better experience. Tucked away behind the local shops in Floyd, El Charros is an authentic mexican restaurant with great hot food and very friendly employees. It's a small restaurant but big on favor. On a warm day you can choose to eat outside on the covered porch area. They have a ramp for handicap people large enough for a wheelchair. Parking is okay, not paved or spots marked but there is plenty of parking. read more
