On our way back from Georgia, we took a detour off of I-77 to avoid some of the post Thanksgiving traffic. By the time we passed through Floyd, we were in desperate need of food, which brought us to El Charro. I was admittedly a bit skeptical of the quality and authenticity of Mexican food to be found in such a small town in the middle of nowhere and I'm not ashamed to say that I was 100% wrong to assume that. What we found here was fresh, authentic, delicious Mexican food for a reasonable price. Everything we had was delicious. The chicken chimichangas I got were fantastic! The chips were fresh and the guacamole tasted as if it were home made. Beers were very cheap and the Sangria was delicious. read more

Food isn't that great, but it's one of the only restaurants in this very small town. The salsa is literally just blended up tomatoes. No real flavor. Most of the time the chips taste stale. The only thing on the menu thats even remotely close to being good enough to talk about is their country ribeye, but then, that's not even really Mexican food. If you've ever had really good, fresh Mexican food, you'd know right away that this isn't the place to get it. It's basic, restaurant chain Mexican food that you can get anywhere, really. The food is one thing, the service is quite a separate matter. Wait staff are rude and unpleasant. They act like high school kids, and seem irritated that you are there. Some congregate in the back seating area, in the dark, and gesture, whisper and snicker at/about the customers. Though, most of the time, they're playing on their phones, too occupied by the internet to remember items you've asked for. The atmosphere is just weird and awkward. You feel like you've done something wrong just by being there or for some crazy reason, they don't like you even though there is no earthly reason why that would even be so. It's hard to explain. The food is just okay. Not worth the prices, really. The owners are also impersonal. The older lady that usually cashes you out isn't very friendly either. Maybe they all just hate being there. And if they hate being there.....maybe customers should find a different, more friendly and pleasant place to spend their hard-earned money. Try Blue Ridge Diner or Parkway Grill or American Pie Restaurant or DJs Drive In. Basically, any other place to eat but at this one. You'll have a better experience. And those establishments are happy that you've shown up. read more

I expected El Charro to be a Mexican restaurant in the sense that Taco Bell is a Mexican restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. The prices are reasonable, the service is quick and friendly, and the food is really quite good. The menu is large and has a lot of variety, and the best part is that it is vegetarian friendly. There are seven vegetarian combination plates (there aren't too many choices, but you can get a bean burrito, cheese quesadilla, cheese enchilada, bean tostada, chalupa, or chile relleno in any combination), all listed in their own section so they are easy to find. El Charro also serves up a veggie fajita plate, so big that you surely won't go hungry. I'm not from the area, but I'll be sure to eat at El Charro the next time I visit. read more

I and my girlfriend got takeout from el charro and instead of chicken quesadillas with extra sour cream she got beef quesadillas. She doesn't eat beef usually but it would have taken an hour to get the order corrected and get back to our campground to finally eat so she just ate it and we went back the next day to get a refund. Unfortunately the woman we spoke to was very argumentative. Even though we told her we didn't have phone service at the campground she got mad that we didn't call immediately. She then pretended she didn't speak English even though we heard her answer the phone just fine only minutes earlier. Visited on a Saturday night for dinner with my son. We were greeted and seated immediately and drink orders were taken and delivered a short time later. I ordered the tex mex burrito and my son got the chicken nuggets with rice. I also ordered cheese dip on the side to dip the chips in. I love having chips and salsa and cheese dip while we wait for our food. Our food was cooked and delivered to us pretty quickly. The burrito was great! I love the cheese dip on top of it (it comes with it) my son ate a few chicken nuggets but really loved the rice. The service was great and everything was pretty quick! This is not my favorite Mexican restaurant but it is a good option in Floyd. read more

In a small town this Mexican food was tasty & had good servers. I had the beef taquitos with a house margarita. The margarita was not memorable. The taquitos were savory and just a little spicy. Seated immediately. Server was knowledgeable and very polite. Food came out fast and piping hot. The food was quite good and some of the best refried beans that I've had in a while. They brought out a small fried dough dessert for free which was a nice touch. My only complaint was that the sangria tasted pre-made from a bottle and a little too sweet, but that could be due to the no hard liquor law in town (can't keep the stuff on hand necessary to make good sangria). We were seated, brought chips, and that is the last time anyone visited our table. 7 employees standing around the food window, but nobody could be bothered to visit a table and take a drink order. When my husband approached an employee he was barely acknowledged. If you've been sitting long enough to run out of chips and salsa, and still haven't been acknowledged by wait staff, it's pathetic. This is our favorite Mexican restaurant. Having moved here from Austin, TX two years ago we have tried several Mexican restaurants in the area and this is by far the best. Food is three stars, but our waitress was so involved with romancing one of the other staff that she had little time to check back to see if we needed anything. Good, fast, inexpensive Tex-Mex food in a clean but not fancy location under Dogtown/Wintersun. Like a lot of other places around the country but its special for being the affordable place in Floyd that you can take your whole family to, get good quick service, everyone will be happy and you aren't eating bad pizza or spending an arm and a leg. And fortunately for Floyd they have an imported work ethic and seem to be open pretty much when you'd expect a restaurant to be open, every lunch and dinner. Having lived in Chicago for ten years, we've got a pretty good idea of what Mexican food should be like. El Charro was not quite up to some of the first-generation immigrant owned places we've been to, but was very good. Their prices bumped them up a star, as we felt we got excellent value for the cost of our meals, which was less than we'd expected. I was diappointed. I really like a mexica cuisine but this was not enjoyable for me. I got the Pollo Ranchero, simple chicken with cheese, and rice. The chicken portion was minimal, tiny, thin strips. The rice was okay but the entire dish was a surpise I expected more for what I ordered. This is a wonderful Mexican restaurant. The menu comes across as your normal ho-hum American-Mexican food. The salsa that comes with the chips will be a hint that this is no ordinary place. The sauces are very fresh and distinctive. The sauce on my chile relleno (which wasn't battered and fried, yay!) had a nice bit of cinnamon. The enchilada sauce was also very fresh tasting.
