I've niw been here a few times. Each time the food and service has been great! I haven't had anything I didn't enjoy.

I have been going to this restaurant for the past 3 years. Lately service has been so unsatisfactory. I have placed several pick up orders and without fail, they are incorrect. This last time just did it. I ordered 3 cheeseburgers with fries, they added guacamole on all of them and drowned them in mayo. I also ordered a burrito with gravy on the side, I did not receive it. read more

Quick stop for some breakfast tacos to go! They have a decent special with the buy 3 mix and match breakfast tacos for $5.99. I got a potato and egg and a papa ranchero. Both came out good. I like that they really filled the tacos, no skimping out on the food. The papas ranchero had some good flavor too. I didn't even need the salsa. I saw some reviews mentioned the tortillas being burned- not this time. I got flour tortillas and they were on point! No negatives at all. The service was good too. The food came out in about 6 minutes. It was a to go order, so I really just sat in the waiting area til they called me. But the ladies were nice and interactive. This is an old restaurant and I don't mind that if the food is good. There are so many great Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, I won't be coming back to this place. An interesting time-capsule, local restaurant. Stopped in on a recent cold Saturday morning for a breakfast taco. Place was crowded but not packed. Ordered a machacado and egg taco. The flour tortilla was horrible! The tortilla was partially scorched and hard. Tasted like it came from a major grocery store and was warmed by an amateur. I recently moved back to the San Antonio area and I have been trying to find a good Mexican restaurant. We decided on El Charro, and WOW! Incredible service from our waitress Beatriz. She greeted us as soon as we walked in and helped make the dining experience wonderful. Food was quick to come out, piping hot and fresh. Ate here this morning & they served my husbands taco plate with a dead cockroach under his tacos . We asked to speak to the manager we were told she was very busy got up too leave and we saw the manager chitchatting with the other waitresses. She wasn't busy at all but running her mouth. We told her we were not paying for the tacos because of the cockroach on his plate but she made us pay for the food anyway. She said she could only give a 10% discount off the tacos. Food and service are both five stars here. The best Mexican food in the area. Menudo is top tier.

We use to come here every weekend prior to COVID. Loved the food. Tried it out again. But even the kids said it didn't taste the same. Hadn't been there in 3 years but decided to retry it. Mistake!! Ordered posole, had a few hominy but hardly any. Daughter ordered 1 taco of chorizo and egg with potatoes and cheese. Everything was extra cist over $4. Husband ordered chiliquilles plate on window but not on menu $15.99!! Son in law gad 3 tacos. We had no drinks just waters. Paid extra for to go container. Bill was over $43. Asked for military discount. Only applicable to Id card holders not whole bill. Then was charged for paying with bank card. Bill went from 43 to 41 dollars and again didn't even order drinks!! Never again. This place is a rip off. Go to Garcia's where the food us really good and no extra fees for containers ir using bank card. Also military discount on the whole bill. Garcia's way better and classier. read more

Had a great experience here on a Friday! I ordered mini tacos al pastor and my kids ordered the adult fajita quesadilla plate. They served chips and salsa w/ drinks while you wait for your food. We had a great bilingual waitress, I didnt get her name but she was so friendly and gave us great customer service. My kids loved the quesadillas, they looked soo good and very cheesy!! But you have to love Tex-Mex because the beans did taste like canned beans but not horrible. Rice was good and the guac could have been a little fresher but again, they loved it since they are more into the rice and quesadillas. I added queso fresco to the mini tacos and they were amazing!! My plate came w/ charro beans, they could have been better though. If you like sweet limonada this is the place, it was delicious!! They served the limonada in a jarrito(mexican-clay-pottery mini barrel shaped cups), impressive! Again overall our experience was great, the waitress was very nice unlike when waitresses are in a bad mood in other places. For three adult plates, two limonadas, and a sprite we paid under $50 without counting the tip, great price for 3!! Service was fast but probably because there wasnt many ppl there at 5pm. The food OMG!!! This is our 2nd time coming here and they haven't disappointed. From the customer service to the food. Our waitress name was Beatriz and she recommended the shrimp nachos as her favorite and these tacos with asada and pork mix.. can you say !! This is under new management and it is terrible. Overheard that today was their first day under new management. I feel they should have been better prepared. There's no organization in the way things are ran. You walk in and it's hard to tell if you seat yourself or wait to be seated. The waitresses have terrible customer service. I waited nearly an hour for breakfast tacos to go. Come to find out my food had been sitting on the counter and they didn't say anything to me. Tacos weren't even that great. Unorganized. First word that comes to mind. I spent damn near 20 on a torta, kids burger, sweet tea, coffee and 2 tortillas. No complaints had it been worth it. Waitress was kind, but forgetful. I waited on my coffee refill, waited for a long time, no memory. I know a cup of coffee is based on refills and.so forth. Shoot, I should have just went to Starbucks or somewhere else. We ordered the chicken fajita plates to take home. They were not seasoned properly. No green bell peppers, with only a few small pieces of onion. The salad was sparse. The meal was not cook well. Piratas de asada mini tacos w/charros, good flavor, but as suspected, everytime I get a steak or asada here, it's a little tough, so I recommend the pastor, barbacoa, or carnitas for your tacos. All mini tacos here come with raw and grilled onions and a grilled jalapeno tornado. They are always tender and flavorful. The asada was diced very small and also lacked flavor. Their pastor is very flavorable. Also, the corn tortillas aren't as corn prominent, as the wonderful Erick's Tacos. While headed out of town for a camping trip we decided to grab a take out breakfast and came across this place on Yelp. We ordered a couple of breakfast burritos and although I wouldn't say it was "fast" the food was pretty good. My first visit at El Charro Restaurant was a pleasant one. The staff is very friendly, attentive & efficient. The menu offers many selections of Mexican food & seafood options. One of the menu items is chicken mole enchiladas. I like chicken mole, but not a big fan of enchiladas. I asked my server if it was possible to have a chicken breast topped with mole sauce, even though it wasn't on the menu. Without any hesitation, my server cheerfully accepted my request. My first bite into my chicken mole was mouth watering. The recipe used at El Charro reflects authentic mole sauce... So delicious! The rice, charro beans & homemade corn tortillas were also a hit!
