Hello everyone, today's adventure takes us to Safford Az. We dove down to watch our grandson play football . Jen & I love our Mexican Food and this area has several restaurants to choose from, it's been several years since being to this one so being Jen's first trip here I thought we'd stop in, it was around 3:30 - 4:00pm a little early for dinner but had a game to go to, we were greeted by a fridenly staff member and seated promptly as the rush hasn't been in yet, Jen order the Pizza Taco ( different ) and I had the 3 street tacos, the tacos weren't bad but not the best meat was a bit dry and lacked flavor, refried beans were ok and the Spanish rice so so ok it lacked flavor and didn't seem that fresh, Jen's Pizza Taco looked amazing but not the best in taste, again lacked flavor. I don't think I'll be back in a while but hope the restaurant can make some changes to keep people coming through their doors for some good Mexican Food. FYI the murials on the walls inside are pretty cool to see. read more

The waiter was fantastic and super friendly. I stopped in once I arrived in town to get my favorite cheese crisp. As always it didn't disappoint! My bean and cheese burro was also super yummy. The salsa for the chips and salsa is too hot for my weak mouth but that is a me problem. I am only in town for a couple of days but I will be back at least once more before I go. read more

We've been here twice. Once during dinner and once during their lunch times special. Each time we have come, the two waitresses we had were in a hurry. There is usually three tables they are taking of, but it feels like they are wanting you to order quickly and move on. They also seemed bothered when you ask for refills, sour cream or napkins. The enchiladas are pretty good, the salsa spicy and the beans gooey. However, the chimichanga was just okay. The meat tasted canned. The actual look of the restaurant is very nice though and we're grateful for a Mexican themed food restaurant. We will continue to come and may update our review later based on other menu items. read more

First time customer and will not be back. Should have taken the hotel staff's recommendation of Casa Manana instead. The food took way too long to come out. At least three tables that came in after us were served prior to my wife and i getting our food. The food was not impressive in the least. Chicken Salad just plain with 1/4 tomato pieces around the whole plate. Chimichanga was decent. The "guacamole" that it came with was not. Drinks were not refilled timely. Waitress seemed rushed. Visiting the Safford area for a few days and came in for dinner with extended family. The atmosphere seems typical of a small town Mexican restaurant. The hand-painted mural on the wall is beautiful and the menu has a fair amount of choices. We enjoyed complimentary bean dip, salsa and chips. However, some of the dishes were not as we expected, especially the Chile Relleno. We've had this dish many times at other restaurants and it is typically a roasted Poblano pepper stuffed with cheese and meat and then battered and fried. Not the case for this one. The pepper was almost in a pickled state and maybe not even a Poblano. It was wrapped in a layer of fried egg with no batter and not at all fried. The wait staff asked if we wanted it "stuffed" which meant adding meat, so we decided on shedded beef. The beef was tender and delicious but definitely not what we expected of a Chile Relleno. Everyone else's meals were satisfactory but not exceptional. Our biggest issue came as we were getting ready to leave and we encountered a staff member exiting the bathroom without washing their hands. Not something you want to see after eating a meal at an establishment and it left a bad taste in our mouths! read more

Today was a good visit. New menu and it looks like they may be getting back to the old el charro that we used to love. I had a bean and cheese burrito enchilada style. The beans weren't quite what they used to be but it was not awful. I like the chips served with the beans and salsa but it's not necessary. I'm just thankful they still serve them when you are seated unlike another favorite restaurant in the valley. The price was very reasonable and the service was amazing! Good job El Charro! read more

Ordered the shredded beef stuffed Chili Relleno from them for lunch... absolutely delicious and way too big for a lunch meal. I am not sure what set off the flavor, possibly a fresh chili, or the fact it was grilled first. They do not skimp on the meat or the cheese. Regardless of the why it was so good, I wouldn't pass it up. The service was attentive and timely with refills on drinks and salsa... Will definitely stop when I am in town again!!! read more

They do not have margaritas or draft beer. We got our check before we were done eating, even if our waitress said no rush. Too bad because we wanted dessert and went somewhere else after. Only reason 2 star is the food is cheap. Corona bottle beer $4 ea. It's more like a family restaurant than a cantina. Also, the food came out in 5 minutes. Hoo boy. First and last visit here! We took a chance with this place and were sad to have spent $28 (including tip) for pretty much nothing except a to-go Dr Pepper. The basket of chips was mixed -- there were some fresh and some stale, and the salsa wasn't anything to write home about either. Hubby ordered the chicken enchilada plate and I went with the guacamole tostada and a chicken enchilada a la carte. The server claimed that the guac was good but turned out to be that pasty, tart restaurant-supplied concoction with not one bit of avocado or onion. The tostada was heaped over with lettuce and some tomato and cheese but that didn't save it at all. I tried to eat it but only got maybe halfway through it. My husband ate most of his chicken enchilada but left the beans and rice on the plate; couldn't eat it. I took one bite of my enchilada and it immediately went back on the plate as the chicken tasted as if it was just a wee bit too far around the bend. Some of the shreds looked pink as if some chicken was added but not fully cooked. So even though the waiter removed my enchilada from the ticket, we spent $28 for virtually nothing. On the lonely highway 70 between El Paso and Phoenix, my wife and I found the neat little town of Safford. There on the Main Street we came across El Charro. We couldn't have been more pleased. The folks are friendly and attentive. The food is great and the iced tea freshly brewed. I got the beef enchiladas, my wife got the avocado crispy chicken salad and we shared fresh guacamole. Everything was perfect!!! This place is definitely worth a stop especially when you hate driving Interstates!!! read more

When I lived in Safford this was my favorite place to eat because the food was delicious. I came back for a visit after about 15 years and it is still the best food! Green chili cheese crisp and the beans were just like I remembered! My husband ordered a tamale and a taco, they were also so much better than what I get in my new home state! I haven't eaten here in quite some time. I was extremely happy with the menu and their chips/salsa platter is bomb.

El Charro is a pretty good Mexican restaurant. Their staff are nice and patient with you, they are pretty fast paced though when walking around so be careful lol I usually order their chicken flautas. The meat is never dry it's very moist from my experience. Their beans and rice are tasty. Their guacamole is also good, I do wish they would add some tomatoes or onion or something more to it but it's still delicious. Their tortilla chips are always fresh and hot which is nice as well. One thing I also love is their ice, it's small and easy to eat which I know is odd but I love eating ice so that's also nice. Their horchata is also good but be sure to give it a good mix, the cinnamon settles on the bottom quickly. Lastly, the actual looks of the place. The seats are not that cushiony, they're actually a little hard. But the view outside is nice. The music isn't too loud. Overall, a nice place :) read more

I now know why they smother their tamales in enchilada sauce and cheese. The tamales I just ate were disgusting, and dry. They didn't have any kind of flavoring. I felt like I was eating cardboard. When you get to a small town such as Safford, AZ, one is never sure how to find the right place to eat. That is why I have come to love Yelp. With some guidance from a coworker we decided to try El Charro. With Yelp I hope to steer others to El Charro. Not everyone has coworkers to make suggestions. El Charro is a nice little gem in this copper mining town. A clean, stylized interior filled with a friendly staff is there to greet you. A simple, no frills classic Mexican menu is there for the taking. I was a bit disappointed there was no Horchata or enchiladas con mole, but beyond that, the menu met my expectations. I ordered a shredded beef enchilada and was pleased to find they had covered in melted cheese. It was sufficiently spicy with real shredded beef, not stringy or mushy. I nice spice and obviously made fresh. El Charro is known for its salsa. They serve three styles, a thin slightly spiced one, a thicker/chunkier one and a spicy jalapeno one. I personally found none of them too spicy. If anything, I could have used a bit more kick in the jalapeno one. They were all delicious and I even bought some to take home. My coworkers all loved their meals (beef quesadilla, enchiladas con green salsa and a taco salad). they all looked good and the eaters had no complaints. Again, as in all my reviews, I score the restaurant on what I expect for its cuisine, location, price etcetera. Was this the best Mexican food I have ever eaten, - no. The great prices, 3 salsa's and the fact it is here make it 4 stars. The food itself is a solid 3, not great but just on part with other Mexican. If you are in safford, or happen to live there and have internet to read this, and want a good value on some Mexican food stop in here. For vegetarians the menu is quite friendly with many options. I opted for a a la cart chillie rellno $2.85 and a sonoran style enchilada $2.65. The chillie rellno was "healthy style" which meant there was no cheese in it but instead it was on the out side, the batter was entirely egg. The pepper it self was fresh tasting and the enchilada sauce was decent. The sonoran enchilada was new to me, a fried corn masa cake under enchilada sauce and cheese. When you combine fried, cheese and sauce it can not be bad. Be sure to ask for the other two salsa's as this place is along the AZ salsa trail. The service was nice, and fast. Inside it is quite casual and clean, not a bad option if you are in the area. read more

I am always looking for a better Green chili, so the Green Chili Burro was a must for me. I was very happy with the flavors the cook had put together, and the unmistakable Hatch chili flavor came through with another home run. Additionally I had the Flaming chicken taco which, when mixed with their lovely salsa, made me one happy camper! Anet was very pleased with the Sonora enchiladas, and the sauces push the green chili to the Top of list green chili We spoke with the cook and he gave us a few good tips and was so willing to share his knowledge. I don't understand how El Charro and excellent or perfect can be in the same sentence. I visited a Saturday morning on the way home to Tempe.The reviews seemed overwhelmingly good. The hostess seated me quickly and I was excited to try the salsa. Well, all I can say is it was like tomato sauce with a bit of oregano thrown in and no flavor. Option 2- I asked if there was a hot salsa . It arrived and again I tasted it with great anticipation. Green, runny and the only flavor was a bit of heat on the finish. So I ordered my food ( Taco, tostada, Two enchiladas. Most plates do NOT come with beans and rice. You have to pay extra. Thats a downside in my book). Literally my food came out in less than 5 minutes. My cheese was not even melted. Okay, Ill give it a try. The enchiladas had good texture, tasty but not extraordinary. The taco meat was quite disgusting. I didnt even try the tostada. Sadly the best thing about my meal was my water with lemon. I would not recommend this restaurant. Our server was amazing. The food on the other hand has definitely gone down hill. Their wasn't much flavor at all. This was a regular weekly stop but hasn't been for a while do me. We had a number 10 and the Mexican Pizza. The waitress said she could take the 10 off we said just a discount is fine. The manager refused both. I don't know if they have a new cook or what but we won't be returning after years of coming here. I would never go back to El Charro again. The floors are filthy, crumbs and food under tables, dirty walls, dead plant in waiting area, carpeting throughout is sticky, grimy torn and gross. The only decent food in buffet was the taquitos. I don't understand how anyone would ever want to eat there! Stay far far away. My wife and I decided to try out El Charro for our anniversary at the start of the month and had nothing but an unpleasant experience and an awful evening. The restaurant itself was rather clean and we didn't have any issues with seating. Trouble arose, however, when we first spoke with our waiter. He was incredibly rude and seemed almost "high" on the job, and we had to repeat our order to him numerous times. When the food did arrive it was cold, chewy and lacked any flavour whatsoever.
