We love El Charro, it has become a family tradition for us to go there on Saturday and get the Radio Club special. The food is great, the service is great and we love the folks there. Try the #2 on Saturday, Chicken Taco, Chicken Enchilada and rice and beans.... Can't go wrong for $5 and that includes the drink AND tax. 15 of us ate here and all universally agreed we would not go back. We had chimicangas, burros, taquitos, green chili sauce, etc. None of it was good. Salsa is watery. Green chili tasted like cream of chicken soup with green chilis. I wish I could write a good review for this meal but it was not good at all for all of us. read more

Service was great, very nice staff. I had the charro beans & guacamole, my wife had the tamales. Charro beans were a bit stodgy, I like them more soupy, and the tomato flavor was a bit overwhelming. I had the small dish, it was quite large, cheese on top was a bit much. Nice hatch peppers on top. I would not recommend the guacamole, it was around $3 ( I can't remember exactly) and it was just a green paste presented in a tiny plastic container. If they are going to charge that for a tiny side I think that they should at least make a nicer presentation in a dish with maybe some chopped tomatoes and onion as a garnish. I know that avocados are not cheap but this wasn't worth it. The tamales were ok but too much masa. Very thickly and unevenly rolled. The rice & beans were excellent. Also they only serve pre-made margaritas in a can, beer selection was ok. On the plus side the bill only came to $29 and that was with 3 beers. Great place. Good prices and great options and combinations for kids which is a must for us! The shredded beef is really tasty and well-flavored. I'm picky and I love that they use crushed ice for their beverages! The beans are really good and the burros and chimichangas are legit. 2 things could be improved and I'd give 5 stars....1. Fresher complimentary chips ...they weren't terrible, but I expect an authentic Mexican restaurant to have hot/warm fresh tortilla chips and these seemed like old "trying to get rid of" version. Now they're free so I'm not pissed, but going to a Mexican joint has expectations of that ;) 2. Improve the rice. It was kinda bland and not well seasoned. Seemed too dry. I get excited for Spanish rice and so was kinda let down. Outside these though, quite impressed! read more

The food and service here get 5 stars! 2 delicious salsas are offered with very thin corn chips. There is a deep fried flour tortilla with cheese, poblanos (?) and jalapenos that we liked so much we *had* to order another. (They are heavy with the cheese...so the 2nd one we ordered '1/2 cheese' & it was still a lot) We ordered an entree that was a masa bowl filled with a meat mixture (the name now escapes me) and if I'd had room I would have ordered another of those too! You can't go wrong eating here. YUM The server endured multiple questions from us out-of-towners with a smile and a genuine caring, which added to our happy experience. Next time we drive through Safford, we'll be stopping here for sure. This is a very casual atmosphere BTW...not a 5-star. But if you are hungry for a good, satisfying meal, stop here. read more

picked el charro after a longggggg work day out of town. the hostess was very nice. we sat at our table for about 10 minutes before the waitress came up. she didn't even offer us anything to drink. she just wanted to take our order. the restaurant wasn't even that busy yet. after she took our order and brought us our drinks, chips and salsa, she would look over at our table occasionally. i made eye contact with her a couple of times, hoping she'd come to bring us more chips. instead, she awkwardly avoided our table. maybe i creeped her out, haha. the food was okay. i said no beans, and expected them to substitute with rice, but that didn't happen. probably wouldn't go back to el charro if in this area again. but not because of the food, mostly because of the service. read more

This is my favorite mexican restaurant to eat at when I come visit all the family in Safford. I grew up eating here so maybe I am partial but the rice is just how i like it. I love to eat. I will eat almost anything. I got the nachos and well, they were some of the worst nachos I've ever had from a Mexican style restaurant. Seriously, Taco Bell has better nachos. The meat was a grayish white color and had absolutely no flavor, the chips were stale, and so on. We were on a tight schedule while eating here and it was so unappetizing that I didn't even ask for a to go box, I just left half a plate of nachos sitting there. Also, their lemonade tastes like it's made from powder. It was part of the Radio Lunch Club special that one of the local radio shows puts on so it was only 5 bucks, and maybe for that reason it was made the night before or something, but honestly it was bad. This Mexican food restaurant needs to get their act together. We were sat down relatively quickly but that is were my compliments end. We sat for 15 minutes before we saw our waitress. People that arrived after us placed there order before us and got there food first. ALL of the wait staff were a hot mess. It seemed that not one had a defined job duty. The food was ok at best. When I went to pay for my meal the casher let a customer cut right in front of me because she had a payment issue. I went to the bathroom and it is filthy. Across is the kitchen. DON'T look in there! I do a bi-annual group drive from Phoenix to Alpine, AZ by way of Safford, Clifton, and Coronado Trail. For as long as we have been doing this event, El Charro has been the official lunch stop. The food here is absolutely basic, but very tasty and extremely well priced. I enjoy the lunch specials all at $5.95. The little daddy (an oversized and green chile loaded tostada) is my favorite, along with the red burro enchilada style. You can't really go wrong here with anything given the quality service, cleanliness, and tasty food. read more

Used to be one of my favorite spots. Not sure what happened, overheard it was the minimum wage increase. Higher prices and fewer employees. The food was not really hot and it took a while to get here. The service was not as friendly and uplifting as before. I really like this place and have been here with large groups before. It twas ok. I had the Chalaca and while it was good I wouldn't order it again. Only because I would have preferred something in a flour tortilla instead of the masa. They have a good kids menu which is great because my kids will not even eat a bean burro. My husband had Nachos that came with the wet nacho sauce you get at a ball park, not melted cheese. He was thrilled. He eats like a five year old. We got the cheese crisp since it was mentioned above. It was very good. They had Diet Dr. Pepper IN CANS (be still my heart). If for this reason only I loved El Charro. Seating was NOT comfy. The booths must be original to the building and by that I mean 50 years old. NO PADDING. One of the best mexican food places in the Gila Valley. Great value and I always enjoy there lunch menu and service. If you are having a party of around 25 or so this is the best place to go, as there party room is the most private one in the valley. This was our first and last time here. We were seated and the waitress saw that we had a child but didn't give us a kids menu, then when I asked for one she gave it to us. I then had to ask her for crayons for the kids menu. ‍ We waited a long time for anyone to take our drink orders. The person who took our order was very rude. After we got our order our waitress never came back to see if we needed anything. We had to stop her from walking by to get a drink refill. Our food was cold. My wife and I had not been to El Charro for over a year. We live Texas and only make it to Safford about once a year. El Charro had changed ownership since our last visit. They should have changed the name with the change of ownership, the new owner is destroying the old one's good name. On this visit I had a shredded beef burrito enchilada style, my usual, and it was barely fit to eat. The beef was virtually tasteless except for the gristle, and the greasy taste of the meal is still with me 16 hours later. My wife had a combination Plate which included a bean burrito, she said the beans were obviously canned beans. I can't emphasize enough how truly bad the food was. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on this El Carro, the old one had excellent food, this one does not. read more
