I asked for a booth because I appreciate the dim atmosphere and comfortable booths. I requested a booth and was told they are for bigger parties. They acted as if they were expecting ten large parties in five minutes. I asked if something changed, because I eat here all the time by myself (and quickly) at a booth. Ah, El Compadre. Home of the Flaming Margarita. There was a time when you'd find me here on a Friday or Saturday night at the bar or in a booth hanging with a rock star or up-in-coming artist/band. If I wasn't here, then I was up the street at The Rainbow Bar & Grill. Great memories and good times were had at both. It's been a long time since I've been back and not much has changed except the bar area, which underwent a makeover. The food is good, the margaritas are strong, & the people watching is always fun. While the server who eventually helped us was friendly, we had to wait around 5-10 minutes just to be seated and another 10-15 minutes to get a menu. I really enjoyed the blended mango margarita with salt rim. It went well with chips and salsa. I ordered the filet dish, and if you're a seafood fan, I highly recommend it! Here is another restaurant that was recommended by a friend and it turned out to be the best Mexican food I have had in a while. We had a table of six. Three of us ordered flaming Margaritas. I've never heard of those before. They added to the fun. Yet most of us found the drinks to be a bit weak!! Eduardo was our server. Very efficient and professional. The menu is extensive. Something for everyone. The food was good. All six of us received our meals at the same time. Hot and a really great flavor. Good portion sizes. Drinks are pretty good. The restaurant has plush red leather booths. It's a big place. Staff is friendly. When we arrived, Freddie was the bartender at the main bar. He really looks after his regulars. Place is very dim inside. Took me 10 min for my eyes to adjust! Hostess wouldn't seat us until we had at least half our party there. Even though they had our table ready and the place was not busy. Woman's bathroom was dirty and cramped. The food and margaritas made up for those negatives though! Amazing margaritas. I had a coconut pinapple one and it was the best I had. There were bits of coconut in it. Apparently they don't use any syrups and its all natural liquors and flavorings. Also so fun that it comes out flaming. The guac was really good. Big portion and super flavorful and fresh. I had a steak quesadilla and loved it. Very cheesy and the steak wasn't chewy and had a great flavor. I had the whole thing. $15 the flan was very good too for dessert. Not too sweet and a good consistency. Server did a good job catering to our large group and coming back to take more drink orders. A very old Los Angeles treasure. It is very dark inside but quaint. We had cheese enchiladas with verde sauce. Very cheesey and good. But I judge a Mexican Restaurant by its beans. Theirs are creamy and yummy. We had green and red salsa which were both spicey and good. I opted for a flaming Margarita. I couldn't taste any tequila. We had about 4 different servers, but maybe BEC we came at 4:30 pm. The service was adequate. I like the ambiance at El Coyote more but the food was better here. Next time I'll get the Snapper Veracruz. They have a good selection of fish dishes. read more

Cool vibe in here, very classic Mexican old school. I was picking up my to-go order, which they got ready quickly - maybe too quickly. I say this because my cheese enchilada had unmelted shredded cheese both inside and on top. The beef taco was even worse with an obviously old, rancid oil flavor in both crispy shell and shredded beef. Came here last night for a birthday dinner. Location on sunset makes parking a little bit difficult. Yelp says street parking and valet but there's no valet and they actually do have a small lot in the back. Cool atmosphere and great variety on the menu. Love the flaming margaritas! They have a ton of flavors to choose from - I did the skinny and it was actually great. For the fajitas for my entree which were also good and sizable. Came here for the first time to celebrate my mom's birthday. She (and I) loved the atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant. The staff was helpful and kept checking up on us. We sat at the round booth to the left of the door that leads to the bathroom and I had the worst time being sat at the edge of the seat closest to the door. Each time someone walked through it would hit hard against the wall which would then make the bench shake a bit and you could hear the door bang a bit. Not my favorite thing to experience during our entire dinner. For appetizers we got the quest fundido with chorizo and chips and guac. The guac was mid, BUT THE FUNDIDO HIT THE SPOT. It reminded me of the LAUSD chalupas from the 90's early 2000s. IYKYK. The cheese was so melty, salty and the chorizo was just as tasty. It comes with choice of corn or flour tortillas. We shared it 4 adults and the portion was perfect for all of us. I got the NY steak plate. I asked for medium, but I got medium well. A bit charred but still a passable meal. I had it as a leftover and it tasted better then. Stepdad enjoyed his huevos rancheros. Mom got a wet burrito and she liked it. its huge she brought back 1/2. Cousin had the breaded shrimps. He only got 5 pieces I believe but the these weren't small shrimp so it was filling. They were ok. Came with salad and fries. The portion of his meal was worth the price. Overall portions are good. This has been my go to spot for tacos since it happens to be a local spot. It's just a couple blocks from me so it's a convenient spot to order lunch from. A friend who also happens to be a neighbor would sometimes accompany me. Well I figured it was finally time to dine in. After spending a couple hours at the HBowl parking lot skateboarding with a couple friends, we worked up an appetite. Since I needed to be dropped off in my area, we decided to eat here. There was quite a bit of a wait when we got there. It was crowded inside, but surprisingly no tables in the back. We put our name in and headed to the bar. Our table was ready by the time we finished our round of margarita. We started with the shrimp cocktail to share. For some reason we all decided to get the two crispy tacos combo. Not surprisingly, we all cleared our plates. The only thing I didn't care for was the flan which was a crappy way to end our meal. At least I know what not to get next time. The food here has always been great. Same for the service. It's why I keep coming back. The convenience of the location doesn't hurt. read more

Dark and Cozy with great food! I came here with some friends on a Monday evening around 5:30. They are using the alley entrance and do have parking in the back. We went inside to the hostess stand and were seating almost immediately. We sat in the back corner and ordered our food and drinks. The food was very tasty, my burritos were delicious especially the chicken one. Prices were as expected, the only strange thing was that they didn't have any sort of happy hour. The drinks were truly exceptional and were lit on fire which made them stand out. I did take away one star because the hostess stand is very awkwardly placed. It is right in the middle of the restaurant and it is rather uncomfortable to stand there and wait for seating since you are basically in the way of everything. It also is extremely dark and took a while for my eyes to adjust. The other reason is because toward the end of our meal at 7:15ish it was very difficult to get out waiters attention to get the check. I totally understand it was more crowded but we ended up having to go and find the waiter. I would come back but maybe after things fully open up. Overall 7.5 out of 10 read more

Came here on a Friday night and the wait was well worth it. Parking can be a little difficult to find on weekends but it's Hollywood, everywhere is hard to find parking. One plus about this place is that you can enjoy a drink at there bar while you wait to be seated. Service here is quick and on point. Started off with the guacamole and salsa, both of which were top tier. Guacamole tasted very fresh and home made not overwhelming with lemon and tomato like most places. For the entrees ordered steak and garlic shrimp. Steak was cooked to a good medium rare and the shrimp was on point. All in all the food was solid.
