    Margarita and abuelitas night cap

Came here on a whim and there was happy hour. The drinks were delightful. We ordered guacamole, ceviche, street corn and ahi tuna. All the food was delicious. Only weird thing we experienced was being there at 5:30pm, the restaurant was empty and we still had to wait 30mins because of reservations. We were just grabbing a quick bite since we were there for a comedy show at the Dolby theatre. So we sat at the bar and fortunately was able to move 10mins in.

Perfect ending for my night at the Hollywood bowl!! I realized that I had a major bout of munchies after enjoying the sublime and superior sounds of the LA Phil performing Tchaikovsky and Beethoven. So I stopped by La Popular and I'm so glad I did. There is a late night happy hour menu and a really nice patio that is the repurposed space of the old CPK that used to be here. Tamara on service went the extra step and made sure my queso FUNdido was loaded with chiles, and the pineapple mango margarita was quite tasty as well! Flour tortillas that came with had a nice char. Perfect ending to a perfect night. And bonus- your parking at ovation will be validated!!

Yay for La Popular! I had this place bookmarked and finally tried it today, leaving very satisfied. Hubby and I originally came for Happy Hour, but once we realized it was also DineLA, we opted for that instead. I grabbed their LP margarita and hubby had a couple of draft Modelos. For food, I had the guacamole and their Corn off the Cob salad with chicken. My husband had their Chicken Tortilla Soup along with a Chicken Burrito. The food was fresh and tasted great. Portions were size-able and their outdoor patio is nice. Service was great and I hope this place sticks around. I look forward to coming back for brunch!

A great location (beautiful outside patio and view), and a seriously awesome happy hour. We stopped by recently for some tacos at happy hour and to give the place a try. It was our first time over at La Popular, and I expect we'll be back again soon for more happy hour, or their Taco Tuesday. We got the queso fundido, 2 each of the ribeye tacos, and 1 each of the chicken tinga. We particularly loved the tacos (and the ribeye was the standout for me in particular - I could have eaten those all day). The queso fundido was delish, and my only complaint is the portion's on the smaller side, and it was so tasty we were through it in two seconds. The chicken tinga tacos were good overall, but didn't stand out to me, so next time, I'd stick with the ribeye. Service was great, and the ambiance was as well. The Ovation is one of our favorite regular hangs, and this is a great place to spend the afternoon while we're there.

We had a chance to try La Popular last month on a Saturday night before a great concert at the Dolby Theatre. This was my first time visiting the Ovation complex. I had not been to the complex since it was still Hollywood & Highland. I looked for dining options ahead of time and made a reservation for the relatively new restaurant. The evening was a rainy one, so we headed out to the restaurant early in case of extra traffic. Upon our early arrival, we were greeted by Nia. She was going to seat us at a high-top table, but when I told her that one of us had a recent back surgery and tall chairs were difficult, she seated us at a regular table which was very appreciated. Emirhan was our server, and he walked us through the menus and let us know that happy hour was available in the full restaurant, not just the bar. We ordered some items from the happy hour menu along with the regular menu. Throughout the night, the restaurant filled up with customers and the vibe was lively. Various staff, including Alejandro, were very attentive and made sure that we had what we needed. Although we didn't take advantage of it, we were intrigued by the tequila cart. Mia was managing it and let us know that it was available on Thursdays through Saturdays. We'll definitely keep that in mind for future visits. The food was good, and the service was excellent. We will definitely keep La Popular in mind for future visits when we are in the area.

    Fun, Black Utensils

By unexpected circumstances, I found myself at The Ovation (formerly Hollywood & Highland) at lunchtime on Sunday, and decided to try the relatively new Mexican restaurant, La Popular. It's a very well appointed venue that's nicely laid out, with an airy patio and a stylish indoor dining room boasting comfortable tables and bar seats for the taking. Kudos, too, on the unusual-but-very-appealing black utensils, which add an extra touch of the Dio De Los Muertos feel that's quite a bit of fun. I was alone, so opted to sit at the bar, where I was well-taken-care-of by Kelsey, a friendly bartender who made good conversation while getting me what I needed and doing prep for what she expected to be a very busy happy hour. Per their own invocation, the menu features familiar, popular Mexican (American?) items that are "an elevated take on straightforward dishes." This means that everything on the menu is something you can get at hundreds of other places around Los Angeles, yet we should be prepared to be wowed by the execution of said classics. Well, not so much. The brunch menu was still available, so I ordered the Breakfast Enchiladas, adding chorizo for a slight up-charge. I was served an artistically plated trio of enchiladas, nicely adorned with sour cream and guacamole, as well as green sauce. Inside the enchiladas were scrambled eggs, a tad of crispy chorizo, a touch of cheese, and lots, and lots, and lots of beans. These were essentially bean enchiladas "garnished" with the breakfast ingredients, which was quite disappointing. I deconstructed one enchilada and, when separated out, the egg, chorizo and cheese had a pleasant flavor -- but as presented, those 3 items disappeared under the overly-abundant beans and the thick corn tortillas. It didn't work. They also offer a breakfast burrito, and I wonder if the portioning of ingredients is more successful in that format. Overall, the experience was pleasant because of Kelsey and the generally lovely venue, but the food in no way lived up to their claims of "elevated" Mexican fare.

Combo Plate with 2 tiny Enchiladas and a Carnitas Taco

Pretty solid choice for a meal before a show at Dolby Theater last night. It's a pretty cool looking place, although a bit of an odd layout. We had to sit in the bar during a super cowded service. Patrick took good care of us, but the place seemed overwhelmed. My starter salad came out with my entree. Food was good, but everything had temperature issues (cold), which was a drag. If hot, I'd have enjoyed it more. My wife had a combo with 2 VERY small enchiladas and a small taco. It came with beans and rice. She was pleased with amount of food, but I'd have still been hungry. I had Chicken Mole Poblano which was tasty. Came with beans and rice. Also, I got a Chopped Salad that was fresh but a little bit of a one-note affair. Finshed with a butter cake that was really good and benefited being served cold. Drinks were good, but really took a long time to arrive. It was really a 3-3.5 star visit, but I feel like it might be better if they weren't as busy, or had more staff.

At first glance, this place looks closed. Seriously--if the door isn't propped open, it gives full "nobody's home" energy. But try the door (I did), and sure enough, they were open. This is easily the best spot in the area for cheap drinks with chips and salsa. Do NOT go to the crack-den-vibes Mr. Tempo. La Popular is where you want to be. They've got both regular happy hour and late-night happy hour. We ordered two drinks, plus queso, chips, and salsa, and the total was $23. In Hollywood. That alone deserves five stars. The chips come out hot, the salsa tastes fresh, and the fried queso was ridiculously good--I'm still thinking about the crispy, burned cheese edges. There's also a great outdoor patio with heaters and fire pits, making it the perfect spot to grab a drink before or after a movie or a show. Hidden gem energy, fair prices, and actually good food. Highly recommend.

Came in for happy hour and things started off a little rocky. We were seated right in the middle of the restaurant, directly in front of the kitchen door, even though there were other two-person tables open. We also waited a bit before anyone came by. But then one of the other servers noticed and totally turned the experience around. She asked if we wanted to move somewhere more comfortable and ended up taking over our table. She was so pleasant and friendly. The receipt says "Ash G," so I'm hoping that was her! We were moved to a cozy corner by the window, which made a huge difference. They brought out complimentary chips and salsa, and we ordered a couple of tacos plus a cachetada. It was my first time trying a cachetada and it was SO good. The tacos were decent too, but the ribeye taco was the standout. The cheese-crusted tortilla (similar to the cachetada) with the toppings made it incredibly flavourful. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience. I'm still thinking about how good that ribeye taco was!

We came for a bite before a concert at the Dolby Theater. It always happened to be taco Tuesday and happy hour so we were able to order a few things off both menus at good prices. Authentic Mexico City fare that was delicious. We ordered a bunch of different tacos, I think the street corn taco was my favorite. Really delicious guacamole, but I found their chips to be a little on the salty side. We think this is a ploy to get you to order more margaritas! Speaking of which, they were delicious and perfectly made. I could have had many more, but time was a factor. Next time for sure. A great spot to come before an event at Hollywood and Highland or the Hollywood Bowl. Service was very good. The vibe is casually elegant and chic. Price point is average for this location. I will definitely come back.

Regular chips and salsa. The chips are so thin and crisp! Perfect!

Happy to have this new Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. We needed something like this with the loss of Loteria and the hours of Ka'teen. Sometimes you just want a corporate restaurant to fill in the blank spots between the cool local restaurants. This place is head over heels corporate. They have a lot of staff, very touristy, a lot of people in just to watch the big screen TVs but still the food is good, the chips are fantastic! The enchiladas I love, nothing earth shattering but they're CONSISTENT! Being as much as a foodie as I am some times I just want to go to Taco Bell, and some times I don't want to go hunting for the best tacos in LA in downtown that is hidden in an alley. Sometimes I just want some simple Mexican food and then go home. No fuss. This place is it. They are providing a needed service. I've already eaten here 3 times. A welcome addition to the neighborhood.

I first heard about La Popular when they announced a location opening in Porter Ranch. So, when I saw they were opening right next to work in Ovation Hollywood, I knew I had to check it out. La Popular makes its U.S. debut straight from Mexico City, one of the world's culinary capitals. Backed by Grupo Carolo, one of Mexico's top restaurant groups, the concept brings an elevated, energetic take on authentic Mexican cuisine. From the moment you walk in, the chic modern interiors, bumping playlists, and warm hospitality set the tone for a fun and flavorful experience. The menu stays true to traditional Mexican roots, with bold, authentic flavors and premium ingredients. You'll find everything from house-made salsas and rich mole to decadent desserts. The attention to detail in both presentation and flavor really makes the dishes shine. What I Ordered: *Ahi Tuna Tostadas - crispy leeks, chipotle aioli, soy vinaigrette, avocado *Seafood Ceviche - shrimp, mahi mahi, citrus, avocado, serrano peppers, pickled onions, cilantro, plantain chips *Tinga Tacos - chicken, guacamole, queso fresco, lettuce *Churros - with chocolate sauce & cajeta - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside *Butter Cake - served with strawberries, passion fruit custard, and vanilla ice cream *Watermelon Hibiscus Margarita - Corralejo Silver, Cointreau, watermelon, hibiscus, lime, tajín It's a super convenient location right inside Ovation Hollywood and with validated parking, it's only $3.

Great food, great service, the food came quickly and the churros were to die for. The view of the Hollywood sign was the icing on the cake.

Shirley Brasserie, the restaurant referred to above, is also located in The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (located next to The Lobby). The "iconic" they refer to is the fact that this hotel is historic -- it was built in 1926 during the Golden Era of Los Angeles architecture. It is named after Theodore Roosevelt. The first Academy Awards (Oscars) was held here in 1929. The hotel had its ups and downs since then but currently it looks beautiful and thriving. Restroom: I did not go to the restroom this time. I think there was a line. But I remember back in 2023 that you had to ask for a key or a code. Which is understandable for this area. Parking: I recommend the valet parking. If validated, the fee is really reasonable (I forgot how much they charged). We got ours validated because we ordered those drinks from The Lobby.

He went above and beyond, helping clear tables, bringing us water, and making sure guests were taken care of while the restaurant was clearly stretched thin. After being seated, we waited quite a while for our server. I eventually noticed what I believe was a manager stop by our table to check on us and ask if we had any questions. Since we had been ready to order for some time, I asked if we could simply place our order with her. She was delightful, helpful, and very accommodating. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, breakfast potatoes, dinosaur kale salad, chicken sandwich, and burger. Everything was flavorful and delicious, but the burger was definitely my favorite. Combined with the beautiful weather and atmosphere, it made for a very enjoyable brunch. The biggest downside was the service speed. Our waiter was incredibly kind, but because the restaurant appeared to be understaffed, he was rarely able to stop by. There were long waits between ordering, receiving food, and getting assistance throughout the meal. It never felt like poor service from the staff themselves--it felt more like a staffing issue. towards the end, I had to remind the waiter that we were celebrating a birthday (it was in my notes, and two people in person were also told, but the waiter maybe forgot). When the tab came, I had to remind the waiter that I had already provided payment at the time of arrival. The delays continued when we were leaving. We needed parking validation and waited about 5-10 minutes because the host had stepped away and there was no one else available to assist. By the time we left, parking had cost us $33 for roughly 2.5 hours. Overall, the food, atmosphere, host, and manager were excellent, and the staff who were there worked hard under difficult circumstances. Had staffing been planned a little better, I suspect this would have been an easy 5-star experience and our visit would have taken closer to an hour or hour and a half instead of stretching much longer. Hopefully management addresses the staffing challenges, because the restaurant itself is definitely worth visiting.

This bar/restaurant was packed because of the FIFA soccer games yet my friend and I arrived as a table was leaving so we had to experience this cool place. Tribute Hollywood has several televisions, lots of high top seating and a bar with hanging plants right in the middle of the space. The menu has lots of delicious food and drink options. It was happy hour so my friend and I ordered several things to share. You order at the bar. The two bartenders were working hard making amazing drinks very fast and taking food orders. We got a number and sat back down with our drinks. The food came out fast and hot. We got the chicken wings, fries, chicken quesadilla and fried veggies. Other cool things were: it's an open air establishment where the front windows are wide open and later that afternoon some television went to the Knicks game! Go Knicks!
