Stopped by La popular because I saw they had a salsa flight. And we love salsa! All of them were super flavorful I unfortunately could not eat the avocado one because I'm allergic to avocados. I ordered a Bloody Mary and returned it because it had zero flavor. So shy away from ordering that. But the waiter had no problem with replacing it with someone else I wanted. They out door patio area is the way to go! It's super nice outside and they have a fire pit. We ordered the combo plate (steak,chicken and shrimp tacos) and the queso Birria tacos. Everything was good! The staff was super friendly and food came out hot and fast! Will definitely be stopping back here for the salsa flight and tacos! read more

I honestly expected La Popular to be awful based on location alone. It looks trendy and cute, and, well...touristy. I was pleasantly surprised. The service was great. The food came out quickly. I ordered the grilled shrimp tacos which were super tasty and even had a little kick to them. The standard margarita was basic but tasty. The guacamole was also a good sized serving. The only thing I thought was "different" in flavor was Mexican rice. Not bad, just different than what I'm used to. read more

Came here on a whim and there was happy hour. The drinks were delightful. We ordered guacamole, ceviche, street corn and ahi tuna. All the food was delicious. Only weird thing we experienced was being there at 5:30pm, the restaurant was empty and we still had to wait 30mins because of reservations. So I stopped by La Popular and I'm so glad I did. There is a late night happy hour menu and a really nice patio that is the repurposed space of the old CPK that used to be here. Tamara on service went the extra step and made sure my queso FUNdido was loaded with chiles, and the pineapple mango margarita was quite tasty as well! Flour tortillas that came with had a nice char. Yay for La Popular! I had this place bookmarked and finally tried it today, leaving very satisfied. Hubby and I originally came for Happy Hour, but once we realized it was also DineLA, we opted for that instead. I grabbed their LP margarita and hubby had a couple of draft Modelos. For food, I had the guacamole and their Corn off the Cob salad with chicken. My husband had their Chicken Tortilla Soup along with a Chicken Burrito. The food was fresh and tasted great. A great location (beautiful outside patio and view), and a seriously awesome happy hour. We stopped by recently for some tacos at happy hour and to give the place a try. It was our first time over at La Popular, and I expect we'll be back again soon for more happy hour, or their Taco Tuesday. We got the queso fundido, 2 each of the ribeye tacos, and 1 each of the chicken tinga. We particularly loved the tacos (and the ribeye was the standout for me in particular - I could have eaten those all day). The queso fundido was delish, and my only complaint is the portion's on the smaller side, and it was so tasty we were through it in two seconds. The chicken tinga tacos were good overall, but didn't stand out to me, so next time, I'd stick with the ribeye. Service was great, and the ambiance was as well. The Ovation is one of our favorite regular hangs, and this is a great place to spend the afternoon while we're there. read more

It was my second time here. Haven't been here for about a year and I'm happy to see they have brunch! Due to a new dietary restriction I'm unable to eat to much salt.... My server Emir went ahead to ask the chef what was on the menu for me... the chef came out him self and went over the menu with me and talked about his delicious dishes that he was able to make with my dietary restriction.With all the great options in their menu I went ahead and chose the avo toast with scrambled egg whites . We had a chance to try La Popular last month on a Saturday night before a great concert at the Dolby Theatre. This was my first time visiting the Ovation complex. I had not been to the complex since it was still Hollywood & Highland. I looked for dining options ahead of time and made a reservation for the relatively new restaurant. The evening was a rainy one, so we headed out to the restaurant early in case of extra traffic. Upon our early arrival, we were greeted by Nia. She was going to seat us at a high-top table, but when I told her that one of us had a recent back surgery and tall chairs were difficult, she seated us at a regular table which was very appreciated. Emirhan was our server, and he walked us through the menus and let us know that happy hour was available in the full restaurant, not just the bar. We ordered some items from the happy hour menu along with the regular menu. Throughout the night, the restaurant filled up with customers and the vibe was lively. Various staff, including Alejandro, were very attentive and made sure that we had what we needed. Although we didn't take advantage of it, we were intrigued by the tequila cart. Mia was managing it and let us know that it was available on Thursdays through Saturdays. We'll definitely keep that in mind for future visits. The food was good, and the service was excellent. By unexpected circumstances, I found myself at The Ovation (formerly Hollywood & Highland) at lunchtime on Sunday, and decided to try the relatively new Mexican restaurant, La Popular. It's a very well appointed venue that's nicely laid out, with an airy patio and a stylish indoor dining room boasting comfortable tables and bar seats for the taking. Kudos, too, on the unusual-but-very-appealing black utensils, which add an extra touch of the Dio De Los Muertos feel that's quite a bit of fun. I was alone, so opted to sit at the bar, where I was well-taken-care-of by Kelsey, a friendly bartender who made good conversation while getting me what I needed and doing prep for what she expected to be a very busy happy hour. Per their own invocation, the menu features familiar, popular Mexican (American?) items that are "an elevated take on straightforward dishes." This means that everything on the menu is something you can get at hundreds of other places around Los Angeles, yet we should be prepared to be wowed by the execution of said classics. Well, not so much. The brunch menu was still available, so I ordered the Breakfast Enchiladas, adding chorizo for a slight up-charge. I was served an artistically plated trio of enchiladas, nicely adorned with sour cream and guacamole, as well as green sauce. Inside the enchiladas were scrambled eggs, a tad of crispy chorizo, a touch of cheese, and lots, and lots, and lots of beans. These were essentially bean enchiladas "garnished" with the breakfast ingredients, which was quite disappointing. I deconstructed one enchilada and, when separated out, the egg, chorizo and cheese had a pleasant flavor -- but as presented, those 3 items disappeared under the overly-abundant beans and the thick corn tortillas. It didn't work. They also offer a breakfast burrito, and I wonder if the portioning of ingredients is more successful in that format. Overall, the experience was pleasant because of Kelsey and the generally lovely venue, but the food in no way lived up to their claims of "elevated" Mexican fare. read more

Pretty solid choice for a meal before a show at Dolby Theater last night. It's a pretty cool looking place, although a bit of an odd layout. We had to sit in the bar during a super cowded service. Patrick took good care of us, but the place seemed overwhelmed. My starter salad came out with my entree. Food was good, but everything had temperature issues (cold), which was a drag. If hot, I'd have enjoyed it more. My wife had a combo with 2 VERY small enchiladas and a small taco. It came with beans and rice. She was pleased with amount of food, but I'd have still been hungry. I had Chicken Mole Poblano which was tasty. Came with beans and rice. Also, I got a Chopped Salad that was fresh but a little bit of a one-note affair. Finshed with a butter cake that was really good and benefited being served cold. Drinks were good, but really took a long time to arrive. It was really a 3-3.5 star visit, but I feel like it might be better if they weren't as busy, or had more staff. read more

Bartender Kelsey was very friendly the first time I went! However, when I went there the week after, the bartender on the clock was not as friendly. Told me they were doing last call due to closing early, however, they sat 3 tables and served them after I had ordered. She also had rushed me to pay :( A third time I had went for a business lunch and I ordered the fajitas. They came out looking like they were sitting for a while with no sizzle or steam like other restaurants would do. In fact the fajita meat was a but room temp. This is easily the best spot in the area for cheap drinks with chips and salsa. Do NOT go to the crack-den-vibes Mr. Tempo. La Popular is where you want to be. They've got both regular happy hour and late-night happy hour. We ordered two drinks, plus queso, chips, and salsa, and the total was $23. In Hollywood. That alone deserves five stars. The chips come out hot, the salsa tastes fresh, and the fried queso was ridiculously good--I'm still thinking about the crispy, burned cheese edges. There's also a great outdoor patio with heaters and fire pits, making it the perfect spot to grab a drink before or after a movie or a show. Hidden gem energy, fair prices, and actually good food. Our server Tanner was the best at answering all of our questions and bringing the best vibes. The restaurant was a cool atmosphere as well. We were seated right in the middle of the restaurant, directly in front of the kitchen door, even though there were other two-person tables open. We also waited a bit before anyone came by. But then one of the other servers noticed and totally turned the experience around. She asked if we wanted to move somewhere more comfortable and ended up taking over our table. She was so pleasant and friendly. The receipt says "Ash G," so I'm hoping that was her! We were moved to a cozy corner by the window, which made a huge difference. They brought out complimentary chips and salsa, and we ordered a couple of tacos plus a cachetada. It was my first time trying a cachetada and it was SO good. The tacos were decent too, but the ribeye taco was the standout. The cheese-crusted tortilla (similar to the cachetada) with the toppings made it incredibly flavourful. Happy to have this new Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. We needed something like this with the loss of Loteria and the hours of Ka'teen. Sometimes you just want a corporate restaurant to fill in the blank spots between the cool local restaurants. This place is head over heels corporate. They have a lot of staff, very touristy, a lot of people in just to watch the big screen TVs but still the food is good, the chips are fantastic! The enchiladas I love, nothing earth shattering but they're CONSISTENT! Being as much as a foodie as I am some times I just want to go to Taco Bell, and some times I don't want to go hunting for the best tacos in LA in downtown that is hidden in an alley. Sometimes I just want some simple Mexican food and then go home. No fuss. This place is it. They are providing a needed service. I've already eaten here 3 times. Getting seated in the outdoor patio gives you a nice view of the Hollywood sign and allows you to enjoy the weather if it's a nice day. Overall, all the food tastes great. The enchiladas were not dry and very flavorful. Breakfast burrito was also one of our faves. The only complaint would be that the chips and guacamole in all the dishes were salty. Delicious salsa and chips and they don't give you too many so you get too full before your meal comes. The ribeye taco was amazing. Definitely recommend. We got the corn chopped salad and it was so so good with the lime vinaigrette absolutely delicious and a total do over we only thought the Carnitas taco was so so but with the delicious Fresca flight and ribeye taco and good service we consider it a win! My husband and I came here for the first time yesterday to celebrate Valentine's Day. Starting with location, it can get a bit confusing finding it. The restaurant is on Highland NOT Hollywood blvd, RIGHT NEXT TO SHOE PALACE and the parking structure. When you use the GPS it guides you to Orchid Ave which is the side of the parking structure that is a dead end and you cannot enter that way. Just stay on Highland! As we entered La Popular, it was a nice ambiance for date night with great music playing. (I wish it had a dance floor because the music had me ready to cha cha, haha!) There is inside and outside dining with fire pits to keep you warm. They also have a bar. The place is nice and clean, restrooms were clean as well, with 3 stalls in the ladies room. The staff were professional and friendly. Our welcome host, seating host, and our server was amazing. Let's talk about the drinks! We ordered the Margarita flight which came with the LP Margarita, Watermelon Hibiscus Margarita, and the Chile Pineapple Mango Margarita. These were some of the BEST Margaritas I've had. BEWARE, THESE DRINKS REALLY WORK!!! :-D Now the food! We ordered the guacamole for our appetizer. It was so fresh and tasty that I should have order some to go! For our entrees, my husband ordered the carne asada plate and I ordered the Suiza chicken enchiladas plate. Both came with a side of flavorful beans and rice. We both enjoyed our food but the chicken enchiladas were delicious!!! For dessert we had the Buttercake and Turtle Pie, which literally melts in your mouth! Why the 4-Star? Along with the regular menu, we each were given the Valentine's Day menu that said $55 at the top of the menu. Now this was confusing, we didn't know if it was a 2 for $55 thing or $55 per person. We decided to ask the guy who brought out our drinks and he just explained that we would get one starter, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts. So to us that meant, it was 2 for $55. Once the bill came we were charged $55 per person. Now hear me out...we paid and tipped with no problem. HOWEVER; Since it's $55 per person, wouldn't each of us have gotten our own Starter, Entree, and Dessert Duo? Comparing it to a Chili's 2 for $25, you'd get 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert. But La Popular wasn't 2 for $110 it was $55 per person meaning you wouldn't have to share anything with your date. If we would have known it was $55 per person, we would have just ordered off the regular menu which would have actually been cost effective because we wouldn't have ordered dessert. All in all, great place. We just feel cheated with the Valentine's Day menu. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my third time visiting happy hour! I enjoyed their signature tacos, trying the ribeye, Carnitas, and street corn tacos. They're all made a bit differently and have their own unique qualities so it's worth trying more than one type. The service staff seemed to really be getting on the ball and are really getting up to speed as this is a new establishment. I came here for a quick bite to eat. It's located at Ovation, at Hollywood and Highland. It's in the back, by the main pavilion. The restaurant offers indoor, outdoor, and bar seating. The outdoor patio was great. It's got a great view of the Hollywood sign. The restaurant has fire pits and outdoor heaters, for when it's cold. They also have fans for when it's hot. For lunch, they offer an appetizer and entree for $25. I opted for two appetizers. I got the ahi tostadas and the ceviche. It was plenty for one person. Really excellent service, food, and vibes here at La Popular! My wife and I tried this spot before a show at the Dolby. The restaurant was *quite* empty between 5pm and 6pm, and I highly recommend taking advantage of happy hour! We really enjoyed our drinks (a holiday punch special they had in early December as well as a watermelon hibiscus margarita), and we were blown away by the chips with guac. I still think about those tortilla chips on their own -- randomly, yet sinfully good. I ordered a combo plate with a mole enchilada, rib eye taco, and Baja mahi mahi taco, and all three were fabulous. My wife had the street corn tacos and LOVED them. All in all, the prices were incredibly fair for the quality, and especially fair for this area of Hollywood with so many out-of-town tourists and marked-up Hollywood Boulevard prices. This location has more Hollywood-ness pumped in than their Porter ranch and Roseville locations! I loved the food! The burrito was rich, seasoned and honestly worth the drive there. Serrano chilies, very present and two of them. Then we had the cheese crusted tortilla from the happy hour menu and that was very tasty with great texture and great flavor. Then we had the tacos à la cart and the chicken Tinga as well as a ribeye taco & both were very flavorful with nicely seasoned meat. The chili pineapple mango margarita was very tasty but a little weak. Relli served us as well as Ricky and both were very attentive and very helpful with what to select from the menus. Let me start by don't know who is giving this place 4 or 5 stars but it can't be for the food and this review is by a person who is Mexican and knows Mexican food. I had the chicken mole which was quite disappointing. The chicken was hard and like charred and then the mole was sauce was poured all over the beans and rice it came with. Almost appeared that they were trying to cover old rice with the mole. The service by Tanner was good but then he turned a bit sneaky and deceiving. I asked if the gratuity was included and how much so I could properly tip. He said oh it's always only I think 15%. When J asked for the bill again before paying I noticed it was 20%. Wow! Not cool Tanner. Next the time truth might get you a better tip! I would not be back to this restaurant. Below average food and a server trying to be deceitful is not where I want to spend my hard earned money. read more

Absolutely enjoyed my time here. Drinks were nice and refreshing and insta worthy, foodwas delicious, service was spot on, bussers were very attentive, management very friendly, came and check on us to make sure everything is great. Live music, decor and ambience were fantastic. Prices were surprisingly good! We had the carne asada, tender steak, rice and beans were flavorful, street corn was a must, absolutely delicious! Carnitas tacos were flavorful, queso fundido w chorizo was delicious, butter cake was delicious! Will definitely be back here and take my family when we're in the hollywood area. read more
