It looked like a choke-and-puke that I enjoy going to: locally owned, very casual, unpretentious, low-priced. It's a 30 minute drive from us, so I suggested it to her, and she said yes. The inside of Fausto's is like what is to be expected from the outside. Enough tables & booths to seat 50, TVs on the wall, plastic plants, old license plates and a Bob's Big Boy sign for decor. It's the kind of place where local celebrity Micah Tyler would feel at home. If you want luxury dining, drive two hours to Houston's Galleria area. For a smidge under $20, we got a thigh & a leg each, she got fries, I got coleslaw, two Cokes. We sat down and got situated - and then someone brought out our dinner one minute later! Now THAT is fast food, and this isn't even a fast food joint. We both enjoyed the chicken. It was hot but not too hot, moist meat, light crunchy skin. Hot sauce bottles are near the drinks, I didn't see them until we were leaving :-( , the chicken would have tasted better with either Tabasco or Texas Pete's. The coleslaw was okay, a little dry. The Hunny wolfed down her fries. Fausto's is a good place to eat, whether for dates, families, sports teams, larger groups, or Micah Tyler. We were promptly escorted to a table by the wall and given menus. She told us our waiter would be right with us, and he was! He took out drink orders to start, I ordered Sweet Tea and my wife a Coke Zero. While he was getting our drinks a young lady came and brought chips and Salsa to our table. He came back with our drinks and asked about appetizers. My wife said she was good on the appetizers, so we ordered our meals. My wife ordered the Queso Flameado with flour tortillas and I ordered the El Taco dinner with three crispy tacos with ground beef and rice and beans. I went ahead and had him at Queso dip to our order. It was very quiet from not being crowded which was kinda of nice! It's kind of plain on the inside and has a nice ambience to it. Our server was really taking care of his job always checking back not only with us, but other tables as well! He brought our food back out in short order. The wife's Queso Flameado looked really delicious! My Taco dinner came out with the three tacos with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese, and also small containers of sour cream and guacamole to add to my tacos!! All of our food was really good and we enjoyed our lunch! The only down thing is they are only open a few days in the middle of the week and closed on weekends. They would probably do a good business on weekends, but I think the owners might prefer to have their weekend's off for family time. That said, a recent stop in li'l ol' Buna, Texas, introduced me to Black Gold Barbeque, a spot whose work stands among the best I've ever tasted. They serve it right--no sauce involved, brave enough to let the meat stand entirely on its own merits. Their sides are solid, too; you don't need fancy, overloaded sides when you're doing this well on the pit. The atmosphere hits a great balance: it's not too polished and not a hole-in-the-wall, striking that sweet spot that says they're fully okay with you making a mess while you enjoy the grub. Top that off with genuine Texas hospitality, from a fun crew behind the counter who clearly enjoy each other as much as they do welcoming first-timers.
