Checked out this pretty small Mexican restaurant in Crestwood. El Gallo Tapatio is one of those places you expect to be some bare bones family owned place, and yes it actually is. It has a pretty simple menu of a few items or so. At least it makes it easier to choose anything. The prices are okay and the food is better than it looks. Bad thing is there's no alcohol. It's not a place for margaritas, but rather Jarritos. That's why they have to make good on the food, so you can at least get something. For meat eaters the menu is mostly for them with things like beef and chicken. There's also crazier things like tongue. It's about $8 for guacamole. Pretty much the only vegetarian thing on the menu it seems. Had a chunkiness with a light spiciness to it. The tortilla chips were crispy and simple without being burnt like at many places. For sure it's one of the many places to get Mexican food. It's located on Cicero Avenue at 137th Street. Loved this place! A true hole in the wall, no frills great Mexican restaurant. Huge portion of fajitas. Meat was flavorful and well cooked. Not the prettiest pieces like the bagged stuff most places used. Chicken thighs whacked into various sizes, steak sliced against the grain then chopped into odd sizes. Can tell they are cutting this themselves. Usual accompaniments of pico, sour cream, guac, rice and beans were all fresh and good. Tortillas were fabulous! Friends both had the 3 taco meal with steak. They both liked them a lot and said they were similar to what both of their mothers made. High praise from 2 Mexican men. Only a few tables inside but most people were doing take out. Very clean inside. Cash only so be prepared. Priced so reasonably you might even have enough pocket change. This restaurant is one of my all time favorite Mexican restaurants around. It's small, cash only and does not offer alcohol beverages but the food and the prices make up for that. They are my go to for burritos, chile rellenos and al pastor tacos. Their green hot sauce is also amazing. Service is always quick and very pleasant, everyone who works there is so friendly. I am very disappointed in this restaurant I go there all the time and I raved so much about it to my 5 coworkers from ingalls that we decided to get lunch I had my husband pick up tacos and bring them to wrk. My receipt for tacos was suppose to be for 8 chicken tacos and 2 Asada tacos. So I called and the manager Ralpha was full blown insisting that he know he did not make 10 chicken tacos , so there is no way that I could of gotten 10 chicken!! Instead of apologizing for the mistake he decided to argue about 2 tacos. Highly disappointed that this happened. He did take my name to give me 2 steak tacos the next time but I see no reason why he couldn't do that first that was clearly a bad move on this manager. Food always hits the spot, they put a ton of meat in the tacos. Never had an issue with the service or any long waits.

An hour round trip to get these burritos and the steak was burned beyond being edible, right along with the chips. Ok, so make it right, right? No, they told my wife to make another hour round trip to get a refund, instead of just issuing it and having is send pictures. Not the first time they've given us food we couldn't eat, but they're normally good, so we just let it go, but this was really disappointing. I've always gotten food here to-go but ended up dining in. Their dishes are just simply amazing! You can't go wrong. The prices are reasonable and definitely packed with flavor. My go to is their carne asada dinner. The staff is super friendly and even when they are super busy, because they do get extremely busy, the staff came and checked on us to make sure we were doing okay or to just see if we needed anything. I always frequent El Gallo Tapatio II. I love the authenticity of the food. I live in the area and I live closer to the other location but this location is better to me. Today I visited the location with the intention of enjoying a quesadilla meal. I placed an order for a quesadilla dinner and burrito dinner. The cashier asked if we wanted a corn tortilla or flour tortilla. I stated corn and tried call back to switch to flour but no one answered. The restaurant called me back and I informed them that I wanted to change the quesadilla to flour. The cashier informed the order could not be changed because it was already made but not paid for. Good customer service includes correcting an order and assisting a customer with an issue. I went inside to pick up the food and the cashier stated the food was already made and it could not be changed. The dinner below is not a quesadilla. I am truly upset that even as pleasant as I tried to be the staff did not want to help me fix this error. I have visited this location for the past 7 years but today will probably be my last time. Good, quick, CHEAP food! 7 of us ate dinner for $34, with a guacamole. I had the pork burrito all the way, so good. A bit of spice on the pork, but not too much! We also had a chicken taco salad (FYI - comes with sour cream even though the menu didn't say that), chicken quesadillas, cheese quesadillas and a steak burrito. I have been going here for years. For pickup and dine-in service. It is in a strip mall. Not very fancy. But it's a cool place for a quick bite to eat. There's a juke box, about nine to ten tables in the whole place. It does get packed with the rowdy drunk crowd after 12am. I've been one of them. Have never seen any fights break out though...which is always good. But the food has been consistent throughout the years. Everything is good. During dine-in you get complimentary chips and salsa. It does help to speak spanish, but it's not a problem at all. I've never had a problem with my order. The torta of carne asada is my pick. Lots of avocado, beans, shredded lettuce and grilled steak chopped into little bits served in a perfectly toasted bolillo. Ask for the pico de gallo and pour it in. Awesome! Oh and to complement it, a large Horchata. One of the best Horchatas I've had. Not too sweet...not too much cinnamon...very smooth and refreshing. Not in the mood for meat...order the torta de aguacate....the avocado torta. Didn't know you could order that, did you? Well, you can. It's the same as the carne asada one sans the meat. Delicious! Over the years this Polish-Lithuanian man has learned about food from different cultures. Often my mother would make American versions of different foods. Baby steps into great tastes. I can't remember my first taste of Mexican food. My guess would be some sort of taco. Growing up I do remember Taco Bell being my frame of reference for Mexican food. Sad, I know. Then somewhere along the line I had authentic Mexican food. My mind was blown. El Gallo Tapatio II is authentic. I'm not an expert on Mexican food, but I know what I like. Was on my way home from work, wife says she had a long day at work so I offered to get some tacos. We're new to the area so this was obviously my first time ordering from here. Burrito for me, Torta for her, and some tacos for the kiddos. First thing we noticed was that the asada really didn't look too appealing. I hate half of my burrito, didn't like it so I threw it out as did my wife with her torta. The kids smashed their tacos before they even tasted them. Best authentic Mexican food for a great price! This little gem is my go-to lunch spot-the food is fresh, the service is fast and I can get my lunch for under 7 bucks including tip! And did I mention that they close at 4am on the weekend??? what more could you ask for? Parking is a bit difficult during lunch time mainly because of this place's popularity. The food was well worth the money. I normally get to go today I decided to sit in and eat with my daughter. It is however bothering me a little that I noticed every table that was Hispanic automatically was given limes with the chips and salsa except us at first I thought maybe she just forgot ours until another white table that sat down and a Hispanic table at same time and one was served limes and one was not. I know this is stupid to be upset about but I am not a white girl ,I'm Hispanic I just look white and speak very little Spanish. My grandfather was working in fields making cents an hour to provide for his family. I stopped eating this place a while ago. 1. Because a better place opened down the street. 2. Because they ALWAYS mess up my order. I ordered a steak torta with only beans. Got home to see that they put cheese all over the damn thing. I guess it's partially my fault for not checking my order before leaving, considering this has happened 3-4 times.
