Mely's is a quaint Mexican restaurant located in a strip mall. We were going to do carryout but decided to dine in. When we came in, only one hostess was working behind the counter. While we sat down waiting for her, I must say she was highly organized answering the phone, taking orders, and assisting the customers who came in to pick up their orders without missing a beat. When things settled down, she came to our table with chips and salsa. Their salsa is good and a bit spicy. I ordered the carne tampiqueña and hubby ordered the steak fajitas. We both chose the corn tortillas. We both enjoyed our dishes.

Everything was fresh and authentic. Guests are greeted with a basket of fresh fried tortilla chips, warm spicy salsa, and other cold sauces to stave away hunger pangs. But save room for a delicious meal. Mely's serves Caldo de Res everyday. This large bowl of tender beef soup is incredibly filling. It's of soft, stewed beef in a sweet corn and vegetable broth, accompanied by warm tortillas, Mexican rice, onions, cilantro, lime, and fried dry chilies, creating a flavour explosion. I also had to try the fish taco. Mely's let me customize my taco Baja style with shaved cabbage, onion, cilantro and lime. So good, every table was taken and the line for pick up was 9 deep. Overall, great food and great service.

This place is ok for a quick lunch but nothing really stood out here as exceptional. Lunch time on a Saturday was pretty busy. The lady behind the register was a one-woman show but clearly a little overwhelmed. Nevertheless she was super nice. We dined in. I wasn't 100% sure if they served tables or if you ordered first because it was our first time. Like I mentioned, the one lady did everything (cashier, hostess, waitress, table cleaner etc) but as I approached the counter she let me know it was open seating. Food was good but everything was kind of cold. My mom had the steak torta and said it could of used a little more meat. Guac was good, fresh, but missing something so we added a little salt for more flavor. Burrito was good, huge, but lukewarm. We had the table right by the door and there tended to be a lot of flies circling our table. I'd maybe come back here if in the area for the service but I'd just make sure to get hot fresh food next time.

I had such high hopes for Mely's based on the warm welcoming, friendly, and inviting customer service I received on the phone and the same great service when I picked up my food. However, I was extremely disappointed with my food experience. I ordered beef tacos, rice, beans and Chorizo con Queso Fundido. Everything was bland. Simply put no seasoning - No Flavor. The tragedy - the Chorizo con Queso Fundido was a salt bomb! I took one bite and couldn't eat it. Can you say - colossal fail. Don't waste your time unless you like throwing money out the window.

Ask the Community - Mely's Mexican Cuisine

Do they serve alcohol, or are they a BYOB? I received 2 conflicting answers to my question.

No alcohol at Mely's. I hope someday they get a license but until then it is only soft drinks. They show agua fresca too but didn't have any on Tuesday when I was there before the Paul McCartney concert.

Authentic and Delicious!…read more I was in the area with my family, and we decided to stop in for a bite. We walked in late one Sunday afternoon and were seated promptly. Our waiter was a polite gentleman who was pleasant and affable. I ordered a mango margarita and my sister had a Paloma. The margarita appeared to have been dispensed from a pre-made container. It wasn't something that was freshly blended. It was decent but a little too sweet. I didn't finish it and ended up ordering a Coke later. My sister enjoyed her Paloma though. My mom had a ground beef taco and a chicken tinga taco. She didn't like the chicken but enjoyed the beef. My sister and I both had the rice and beans. For tacos, we ordered chicken tinga, Carne asada, and al pastor. The tacos were phenomenal. They were flavorful, tender, and authentic. The tacos are small, like street tacos, but it was more than enough. The rice and beans were also tasty. My sister didn't care for the rice, but I enjoyed it. We all agreed that we'd visit Maiz & Barrio again. The restaurant vibe was lively and comfortable. The restaurant decor is tasteful with vibrant colors and beautiful wall art. The restaurant is a decent size, so the tables aren't too close together. The bill was $116 for the three of us, which included a 22% tip.

We found ourselves outside of Chicago hungry. My fellow Yelpers did not disappoint…read more Burrito Jalisco was authentic Mexican fare with huge portions. I regret that we were there late in the evening and left half of our meals on the table. Lets start with the outside. The only sign is on the building and some lights were burned out. Inside resembled an old diner with those colorful flags criss crossing the room. Tile floors, a few booths followed by tables in the side room. We were told to seat ourselves. Waitress #1 brought water, chips, two salsas, spoons and extra napkins. Here is why we reduced this restaurant's rating. The chips and salsa was not good. The salsa was watery (or well blended) The chips were not fresh. My husband though they were burned. I dipped a chip in the closest salsa and reached for the water immediately. SPICY! But not favorable. We later learned the other salsa was mild. P I like spice but it has to have flavor. Disappointing My husband ordered the ground beef burrito with mas frejoles. (Im a lucky lady) No arroz. It was Huge- Chipotle sized. Inside was ground beef, lettuce, tomato, cheese and he paid for sour cream. The burrito was moist and good. The beef lacked seasoning. I was adventurous and ordered Quesabuirria Combo. I received 3 "tacos" with fried corn shells filled with ground chicken, diced onion and cilantro it was served with a consume. A red broth with diced inion and cilantro. Very simple but very favorable! The menu showed someone dipping the taco in the consume. I dipped my taco and I ate the soup with a spoon. It was good. I also ordered Elote because a sign said "now available" The corn was served in a bowel with a dollop of mayo, cheese, cilantro and paprika. Mix it all up and enjoy! We both agree we would return except that it was a 7 hour drive. Thank you yelp for helping us find this great restaurant!
