I have to rewrite my 4-star review from 2015, something changed and I cannot tell you what it was but the place just went downhill. The first issue is that they cannot get any orders correct, we ordered several burritos some we wanted with no beans, some with no rice, and one we wanted "not spicy". So what did we get, everything was wrong and the person who wanted a little spice couldn't even eat theirs. Then the quality is just not the same as it was, the carne was just terrible and the carnitas were fatty and not good. They always get my order wrong. There's definitely a language barrier when placing an order on the phone, and it presents in frequent wrong orders. Sometimes items are missing or incorrect (a taco instead of a plate, etc). This last time I ordered a veggie burrito--as they have on their menu--with no sour cream. Got a burrito with a chile relleno inside. I don't even know how that happened. Pretty expensive place and the quality of the food is not equivalent. The chips and salsa they give you at the table are delicious and the agua de jamaica was very tasty but the veggie burrito was very mediocre. The ingredients were not well mixed together and the ratio of tortilla to ingredients left your mouth dry. It was a decent size though and when I finished it the next morning I took it out of the tortilla and ate it in a bowl which was much better. Years ago we would go here and my rule was no meat because we would get it home and it was cold and I got sick a few times. But would get cheese enchiladas and that was ok. LEGIT. Walk into this place to be immediately transported into Quintana Roo. The food here is fresh and delicious. Authentic Mexican food with all of the side dishes, garnishes and salsas. Probably the best part about going surfing in the moss beach area is that you can grab a burrito from this place. The super burrito is one of my favorites from here but they have an extensive menu. This is our go-to place for lunch when we visit Moss Beach for a hike. Their service is great. We usually get carne asada taco's and wet burrito. We have also tried their specials some time. Their specials are a good value for money and the portion size is large. They have both indoor and out door seating area. But, for the rest us who would like to enjoy "good" food in a building that isn't ready to be torn down, its best to keep driving either north or south to get a Mexican meal worth the money. We were famished after spending the entire morning at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. This place was close enough and had a good rating on Yelp. So, we decided to try it out. When we arrived, there were three people before us in line. It took a while but we eventually placed our order and proceeded to find a bench to sit and began to wait for our food. We chatted amongst ourselves for about 20 minutes and heard them call for #73, then #74, and a few minutes later #76. They had skipped #75 which was me. Well, I thought to myself that it happened sometimes. Mine should come out any moment. Then, 5 minutes later, it was #77. Another 5 minutes passed, #78 and #79 were ready. Hey wait a second! What about my #75? By now, our wait time was at least 30 minutes. I went to the window and asked the clerk who told me he would go back to check. Yet, 10 more minutes and still no #75! Hunger sucked out the last patience in me. I went directly to the kitchen to see what was going on. The cooks said they were working on it. Just now? Only then, he brought out my meal. Seriously!? My time would have seemed well spent if the food were superlative to redeem the unaccountable holdup but that was a false hope. Despite my rumbling stomach, I couldn't bring myself to finish the tamales. There was an unfamiliar seasoning in them. The flavor of the lengua taco was good but one fatty beef tongue that was. El Gran Amigo didn't give us so much as una gran experiencia. Not once did they offer an explanation. Forget about an apology. So this was my first time ever going to Cali, and I'm glad that I chose this spot to have my first tacos ever in Cali. If you were to judge this place by it's cover, it looks like a hole in the wall, but hey "hole in the wall places honestly always have the best food"!!! The inside looks very hipster and it has california written all over. With the decor coated in bright colors, and picnic tables scattered throughout the interior. I was greeted by kind and welcoming customer service. I ordered 3 Tacos De Carne Asada, and I honestly don't even know where I should get started. They came out in about 5 minutes, you could see that all of the ingredients were pretty fresh!!! The tacos had flavor for days!!! and the salsa had a nice kick to it!!! After an exciting day at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve I was hungry. I was planning on scouting out an inexpensive place to go with my camera club when we week came back the following week. El Gram Amigo is right on one of the corners where you turn to go to the reserve from Highway 1. It reminded me of a place to stop on a road trip. The sitting areas might need a bit of a cleanup but I peeked in the kitchen and it looked passable. I wasn't bother by this in the least; I was pretty scruffy after climbing on rocks and exploring tidepools. I was their only customer and I did not look out of place. I had an asada taco it was served with chips and salsa. The taco was good and the chips were fresh. The salsa was more like a pico de gallo with a touch of heat. I loved it, and for that reason I put this Taqueria on the lunch possibility list. I wasn't able to make the next trip and my photo buddies went to another spot. I would stop here again so I can have the salsa and a taco. I don't like burritos, so I cannot vouch for them here, they do have several on the menu. read more

I have been coming to this place since I was a little kid. Their carnitas are juicy yet crispy (El gran has probably my favorite carnitas of any other place I've been too) the carne asada is tender and full of flavor, and as weird as it is since I'm not vegetarian or anything, even their veggie burrito is awesome. The quality and flavor has somehow remained unchanged from the delicious food I enjoyed here as a child, it really takes me back. The employees always have a smile on their faces and love talking with their customers while taking orders, and the food comes out before you know it!
