Hubs and I drove over the mountain to devour tacos and burritos at our normal spot but decided to try a new place: Taqueria El Timon. The restaurant is rather small with five tables inside and several outside. Order taking was fast and pleasant. We ordered a super burrito, asada taco, crispy chicken taco and baby bean/rice burrito. We had high expectations due to the five star reviews. Sorry, we won't be coming back. The asada taco was ok, meat flavorful. I expected the crispy chicken taco to be fried and dripping with oil. It was a tortilla that was previously fried and cold along with the chicken. The burritos were flavorless with store bought tortillas and the rice was horrible. It's not the traditional Mexican rice with tomato but seemed to be saffron, yellow and have sour taste. The best part of our dining experience: chip bar.

I decided to try this new taqueria and had high hopes based off of reviews but sad to say it wasn't that great. I'm not sure if they make their own flour tortillas for their burritos? If so they completely overpower the burrito. The flour tortilla is a bit on the thicker side and very gummy. It's also sweet for some reason which wasn't appetizing at all. The meat is chewy and had a lot of fat chunks. This place definitely has potential if they change their tortillas. I couldn't even finish it:/ The inside of the taqueria is normal, people were just sitting down enjoying their meals. Their drinks are overpriced but are decent. Their salsas lack in flavor and spice. This place is a bit hidden/small and parking isn't that great either. Overall the person who took my order was kind and friendly so no issues there. I definitely wouldn't come back though.

The portions are massive!!! And cheap!! You need to come here. The chips and salsas are amazing to and self service.

I've been so excited to try this new taqueria and it didn't disappoint! The staff is so friendly and welcoming and the most important part is they got my order right which proves to be hard for some other taquerias. The burrito was great, I got a baby burrito with just black beans, cheese, and grilled chicken and the chicken was incredibly flavorful and not dry in the slightest. The baby burrito was perfect size, too. The prices are very reasonable and they have complimentary chips and salsa. It's a popular spot so they get crowded, if you want a table I'd recommend being prepared to wait!

I stopped by here today, as I have been meaning to try it and was happy to see they opened in our small town of Montara. My go to test burrito is Carnitas. It was well made with the proportions mixed in the proper way as to get all the ingredients in every bite. The carnitas is soft, crispy and super flavorful. The rice and beans are tasty in their own way but not so flavorful as to mess the balance of flavors. While a burrito may seem like a simple dish it really highlights how executed correctly is amazing, but messing up any of those ingredients will take you from the top to the bottom. The actual restaurant is tiny but there is a lot oof seating where you can look at the ocean. Staff is super nice and communicative. Will definitely go back as I discovered they have a whole breakfast menu! It's the best Mexican food I've had on the coast!

Food was fresh and tasty. Very generous portion on the mixed fajitas plate (shrimp And beef). Beef a bit tough but tasty. Rice and beans also tasty. Good service. The inside sitting area is relatively small, but cozy. I recommend. Nice to have what tastes like homemade Mexican food in Montara.

A new favorite place to go to split a burrito with my partner! We always get the Carne Asada Bañado Burrito with green sauce. The service is friendly and quick.

The best al pastor I've found in coastside yet. The back porch has a view of the Pacific, and the service was quick and excellent. Will be back to try the rest of the menu.

Carne Asada Super Burrito. The guac is excellent!

The people who own this Taqueria are so friendly! I had a great conversation with Edgar out on the deck that had a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. He told me they serve breakfast and I'm sold. That's my favorite. But this day was my first visit and I had a carne asada super burrito and it was delicious and very filling. I also ordered a fish and shrimp taco plate for my hubby. He was very happy. The chips are really delicious and we love pico de gallo, I suggest ordering a side of guacamole. Looking forward to more meals and warmer weather so I can enjoy that deck.

Molcajete, served in a lava bowl with cactus (nopales), fish, prawns, steak, & chicken. Side of beans in the background.

My boyfriend even said, "Hi," to the guy at the register, and he never responded. When I was placing my order, I wanted to make sure he heard me correctly, so I repeated part of it. Instead of answering politely, he responded with, "Yeah, yeah, you'll see it on the screen," in a rude, dismissive tone that made us feel like he was just trying to rush us. Our food came out quickly, which was probably the only positive besides the michelada. The tacos were also disappointing. The photos show them being served on yellow corn tortillas, but ours came on white tortillas. I didn't complain because I figured they'd still taste good, but they had almost no flavor at all. My boyfriend ordered a shrimp cocktail, and it was just as bland. Between the two of us, we spent around $50, and it honestly felt like money wasted. The michelada was the only thing we actually enjoyed. As someone who loves supporting Mexican-owned businesses, this experience was really disappointing. I came here with my cousin who wouldn't stop raving about this sandwich I "had to try". So he, my kids, and I took a drive. Walking in, I really appreciated the cleanliness of the place. They also had a really cool floor that looked like you were standing on the beach. Grade: A The service was great! The person who took my order was patient and very helpful when I was trying to figure out food for my son. I didn't know that they also served breakfast items until noon. I ordered the #27 Nor Cal, a kid's burger for my daughter, and so thankful they offered pancakes for my son. Service grade: A Let's get started on the main attraction for me...the #27 NorCal. There are so many choices on the menu that I really want to highlight how great this one is! I ordered it with Dutch crunch per recommendation from my cousin. The NorCal comes with chicken, teriyaki, peanut sauce, pepper jack cheese, mayo, onions, sprouts, and tomatoes. Yes, peanut sauce. The bread was toasted to perfection and soaked up the sauciness. I'm the first to admit that my cousin was 100% right! I really loved this sandwich. The flavors and quality were off the charts. This sandwich easily goes into my top 5 all-time. Wow! Grade: A+ I really appreciated that they have a kids menu! My son had the pancakes. He usually complains anywhere we go, but he actually turned to me and said that he liked these pancakes. I picked one up and I must saw they were thick, fluffy, and delicious. The fact that my son was happy, made our visit all the more better. Grade: A My daughter had the kid's cheeseburger. The burger was a 1/4 lb and came with a generous portion of fries. The French fries were crispy on the outside and perfectly seasoned. The French roll used for the burger may be the best French roll I've had. (Of course I had to try it) haha The outer part had an easy chew and the inner part was like a pillow. I only tried the bread, but my daughter was overall content. The cheeseburger was a good size for her. Things that I want to try next time include their sourdough bread that looked fantastic, their flan, and this bbq beef sandwich that looked insane! There are also a few other sandwiches that looked good on the menu...chicken marinara and provolone, a honey mustard one, and the other was a California club. I'm still thinking about my sandwich a day later so it may take a few visits before trying others. Apparently this spot is a not-so-hidden gem to others as while we were there, the place filled up fast! When we were leaving, a line had formed and the staff readily took care of everyone. I guess it's a known spot. Gherkin's in Montara will be a must-stop any time I'm remotely near it if not even at home...it's worth the drive! Thank you Gherkin's!
