My favorite mexican restaurant of all time, anywhere, forever. The Huarache is the greatest food ever invented. It's a large tortilla filled with refried black beans, red & green sauce, onions, cilantro, cheese, cactus & meat. The meat options are steak, chicken, fried pork, marinated pork, chorizo sausage, ground beef, shredded beef, pork stomach, pork skins, beef tongue, beef head, beef tripe, lamb, fish, or shrimp. I've tried them all and they're all good! If the huarache is too spicy for your liking, the tostadas are a comparable substitute. read more

Ugh...I hate these types of reviews. Why two stars...because it was open when everything else was not...that's the best I can do. First, service was horrible...the server was actually talking to friends at another table rather than helping the three tables she was assigned. I finally stood at the register to pay and was there for five minutes before anyone came up. Others were right about the cheap chips and salsa baskets. We actually received 11 chips total. I love Mexican food and rarely have had bad stuff, but this qualifies. I had the nachos platter. But there were no chips that had not suffered the soggyness of the topping. The toppings were relatively flavorless and all tate canned. My wife had two crunchy beef tacos. The ground beef meat was pretty bad and the taco shells tasted like they came from a grocery store box. Nothing to summarize...just not a good experience. read more

I wouldn't go here again. I went because all of the good reviews but I thought both of the plates on the table were gross. It smelled weird inside, The water tasted weird, rice was gross (how do you screw up water and rice??) "sweet red sauce" is no lie, it tastes like chocolate. I'd have a hard time recommending this place and here is why. They charge to use credit card. The queso was a weird combination for white cheese possibly queso fresco and Parmesan cheese that was far from any cheese dip I've ever been served and far from authentic.. The margaritas had zero alcohol, not weak but you couldn't taste any alcohol at all. We got 2 versions the frozen and golden which is on the rocks. Kids quesadilla was a combination of yellow American cheese and white shredded cheese again not authentic creamy Mexican cheese. Adult meals were just ok. Again They added SVC charge to use credit card. Bottom line do not bother with this place it's close to going under you can just tell. read more

My husband and I lived in Dunedin and we were excited to see another Mexican restaurant open within walking distance other than the pricey Casa Tina. Our first experience around four-ish years ago was just okay. I would expound but I forgot what we ordered. I know they didn't have their liquor license at the time (they just opened) so it certainly wasn't drinks. A month or so later, we returned. We returned for the last time. Again, I can't remember what we ordered but I know both of us came to the same conclusion: the food was simply not good. I don't remember the service being particularly bad or particularly good. Last week, we returned to Dunedin for a visit. We noticed El Huarache had mostly good reviews so we thought perhaps they stepped up their game. Nope. This was around 7:00 on a week night and the restaurant was practically empty. My husband ordered the beef chimichanga. It was bland. It didn't taste like anything. I ordered some sort of grilled chicken salad - I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of the salad - and it came out with iceburg lettuce, a few slices of bell pepper, some sliced up onion, and grilled chicken on top. It was suppose to have avocado but they neglected to include it. The chicken was moist but bland. The entire salad had no season or dressing whatsoever. It was pitiful. When I asked for the avocado that was suppose to be on the salad, the waitress was not at all apologetic. I just got a, "Okay. Yes." The avocado that was brought out was far too ripe. It had brown spots throughout and tasted horribly bitter. I paid nine bucks for this. Nine. Bucks. Do yourself a huge favor and choose any Mexican restaurant but this one. read more

Their food is not the best Mexican food; however, it is pretty good. I like the fact that they are authentic and not Americanized. Every time I call in the place an order, the girl is extremely polite. I also like the fact that they deliver in a timely fashion. When my arrive arrives, it is always warm. Traditional Mexican style cooking in El Huarache. They have a few tripe dishes on the menu, which is very traditional but not common. To me, the food was just decent, some was a bit bland for my taste. What I like is simply that there are not many "real" Spanish style restaurants around here and this adds to the mix. Even if it is not the most exciting food, I am still happy to have the option. What I don't like is that they don't keep it very cool in there. That matters on a hot Summer day. The portions vs. price are not as good as I am used to seeing at a lot of Mexican restaurants. Also, the margarita's are kind of weak, which is definitely not standard for a Mexican joint. I will give them a couple more shots but for now, I am sticking with just an "ok" rating. read more

Not awesome. First, the basket of chips is more like a snack size portion for a kids lunch box. As they bring you more chips, they stack the baskets on top of each other...to shame you, or just because they are lazy? Not sure. The salsa is okay, but VERY heavy on the garlic and tastes almost like marinara. The cheese dip (which at any other Mexican restaurant would have been queso blanco) was almost like velvetta with rotel that I could make at home, but not as good. I ordered a shredded chicken burrito but received a ground beef burrito. It was alright, but the red sauce that smothered it tasted like chili sauce and drowned out any other flavors present. Hubby got the chile releno and did enjoy it, though. The drinks were fine, but expensive. All in all, dinner was expensive for what we ate. Chips and salsa were old,and stale ( and they charged $4 for it too), they don't have any taco specials on Tuesday, no beer on tap, service was very sub standard, and the food was very bad and overpriced. Just moved to Dunedin and had heard good things about this place. VERY Disappointed. Ordered the chile relleno and was was told it would be a 30-45 minute wait. They suggested the cheese enchilada. It was SO BLAND. It was covered in a watery red sauce which had no seasoning, Sangria is out of a box. Will not return. read more

Excellent food and service. We had the 2 taco lunch special with refried beans and rice, mixed shredded beef with hard taco and the soft chicken celantro taco, very good!! Tried the enchilada with Verde sauce too. The green sauce here is as good or better than some central CA Mexican places that know how to do the green sauce!! Kudos to the chef :) Myra, our waitress was wonderful. I had never been here before, so was going back n forth on what to order. She was patient and helped me figure out the right combos. The warm homeade tortillas with salsa make it nice while you're waiting for your order. Great friendly service, nice atmosphere, cool bar, Margarita specials and close to the Causeway after a day of play, excellent place. to stop. We ordered two plates to go too. This was very average. The shrimp in my shrimp taco weren't cleaned properly. The cheese dip tasted burnt. The salsa was alright. For my main dish was a taco salad and it was just okay. It's true, I'm deep in Huarache love. I know one Yelper didn't care for the chicken bone they got in their chicken dish. I love it when that stuff happens because it means they are making it from scratch and probably yanking chicken off bone back there like Mexican maniacs. I can be picky, but as long as the place is clean and tastes alright I'm all in. Of course Casa Tina is just down the street as an option, and it is a tourist favorite, but for me, Huarache is the place to be. So wet with sauce, the masa is stuffed with bean paste and the whole thing is topped with delicious cactus strips and a bunch of other stuff. It's kind of like a molcajete without the lavarock bowl. Also the ingredients have a little more order to them, like they are layered rather than mixed all together. This thing is best shared in my opinion, and the carnitas were my flavorite. The salsa tasted like canned tomatoes. They do not make fresh guacamole...it was watery and definitely not homemade. I asked for sliced avocados on my tacos and they said they did not have sliced avocado. The steak in my taco was extremely tough. You have to pay EXTRA to get queso fresco instead of mozzarella cheese....what authentic Mexican restaurant pits mozzarella cheese on a taco?! I will never come back here again. read more

Was served a chimichanga with some unidentifiable brown sauce on top. Took a small bite and could taste sweetness. Odd. Never had a 'changa with that kind of flavor. Maybe it was the sauce. Took another bite and confirmed that the sweetness was indeed strange--and awful. Because I was with guests I had to plow through the thing. The strange flavor reminded me of frozen peas. Not a good taste, especially with Mexican food: that sickly-sweet frozenish pea undercurrent. Nasty. I noticed that the rice next to my entree had peas mingled throughout. Weird. Can't stay away from the peas, can they? The rice was flavorless. Maybe they needed peas to zip it up? Whatever, it didn't work. I have eaten alot of Mexican food in my life - 12 years in Phoenix and all over Mexico. This place serves authentic regional Mexican food, excellently prepared, spicy and delicious. I had the Huaraches al pastor.... YUM. Marinated pork, refried black beans, grilled scallions and cactus over a homemade tortilla. My boyfriend had enchiladas - chicken and marinated pork with excellent green and red chili. Definitely recommend eating here if you like GOOD Mexican food. read more

Service was excellent. Server was pleasant and efficient. Food was authentic and tasty. Chips came with 2 salsas one mild the other spicy both were good. Guacamole was a little too creamy but was good. Prices were inexpensive. I definitely will go back and try some other dishes. We were sort of scared when we saw the outside, but we're so glad we went in! The food is excellent. This truly is authentic. I ordered the chicken enchiladas verde. Everything on my plate was prepared very well. I never eat refried beans but I ate them here because it was so good. The rice wasn't too dry like many other places I have visited. The enchiladas were probably the best I have had, and I eat MX food weekly and have been to MX many times. The service was friendly and very prompt. We will be back for sure! read more

I got a vegetarian Huarache. They didn't have it on the menu, but they made one for me anyway. The waitress seemed a little bewildered by the thought of food without meat, but it came out the way I ordered it. The food was decent. No complaints, but I don't think it was particularly special. I was a little let down by the chips and salsa. Neither was plentiful, and the salsa was really watery. This was not the kind of salsa that you mound on a chip. read more
