We dined here for lunch in Oct 2014. We read the reviews, so many good and some bad ones too. We noticed the bad ones were written months ago. Driving up we were hesitant, it's not fancy on the outside and not on the inside either. But we were in the mood for Mexican and took the risk. Happy we did, so delicious. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his parillada de carne and I ordered a marinated steak taco, chile relleno, and rice from the ala carte menu. On Saturday, June 29, 2019 my friend and I met up at El Huarache Azteca. BIG MISTAKE!!! An aroma that might have been a cleaning product or a sewer issue assaulted our sense of smell. Stale, cold corn chips were served but we went ahead and ordered Margaritas with salt, hoping that it would get better. Our Margaritas arrived minus the salt. The green colored drinks tasted strangely like Minute Maid Limeade. They were planning to close at 8:00 p.m. to host a baptismal party. If I was just rating the food I would give 5 stars but the service is less than great. As others have said, they bring you a snack size portion of chips and salsa, get your drinks take your order and then never return except to serve your meal. I've never ate at a Mexican restaurant where they aren't shoving chips and salsa down your throat. On the positive side, the food is delicious and very fresh. I recommend the chimichanga. The sweet red sauce that comes on it is great and I normally don't care for red sauce. This was our 2nd time here for lunch and I'm sure we will be back again despite the poor service. read more

This place is GREAT! My wife and I eat here at least once a week. This is authentic Mexican food, not just your typical tacos and burritos with refried beans (although they do have those). My favorite is the namesake, El Huarache with steak (English translation is Sandal, which is the shape of the homemade corn tortilla). The margaritas are average. The food is average like any typical Mexican restaurant. Their credit card system is garbage. My Son-in-laws card was declined, then approved, but the employees said it was not. So they charged the card again. Found out it was a double charge and had to go back. Took 30 minutes to sort out the mess. To top it off, some drunken asshole was in our business the whole time. Seems to be a regular. Will not go there again. Not worth the hassle. We went in to try something new. Our food was pretty good but we ordered a chimichanga and it had cheese wiz covering it. Because of this, what was supposed to be a crispy tortilla was like mush. We also did not care for the salsa, bit that could be a matter of taste. The number one thing that gets my goat is our water! Most of us in the party ordered water. We asked for water refills and they brought out a decorative bottle with a cork. We thought the was a nice touch instead of a pitcher. A bit later, we drank this bottle and asked for another water refill. We got another bottle. We got to pay the check and my dad says we had been charged $3.95 for each bottle of water! Seriously?!? It was only tap water! The cork on the bottle was not sealed to make us think it was anything else. Wow! Well, we inquire about this, and they insist this did not happen. (We were a party of six so there were many things on the bill). We left, drove two hours back home and look at the receipt again, and yep, there it was! We will never go back here for the fact they treat their customers this way. If you go, be careful when ordering water. read more

I'd like to start by saying not to judge this place by the exterior or interior. We are relatively new to the area and love Mexican food. We don't like the big chains, or Tex Mex. We have since made this our go to for Mexican. It is very authentic and tasty. The staff are incredibly nice and have grown to remember exactly what we like. They even give us their special hot sauce from the back. They are very accommodating to change. I usually request mine without something and extra of something else. They have never up charged us on any of our requests. I feel like we have become part of their family now that we go their so often. If you haven't tried it, you should. read more

Simply delicious authentic (Non-Americanized) Mexican food!! Admittedly, as a long time resident of Dunedin I drove by this place for years...and only until two years ago I finally went there. I won't bore you with all the things I have tried, but I will tell you categorically, that every dish had been superb...and I have never had a bad meal, or bad service there. ever. The prices are very fair, and the amount of food is almost too much, where I inevitably take some home. I am also a frequent diner at Casa Tina in Dunedin, which is a bit more upscale of course, and bit more pricey...but also very good in it's own right. I urge anyone reading this to give this family friendly, very inexpensive alternative restaurant a try...and see if you agree with me. PS: per the review complaining about the chips......the salsa and chips are served complimentary when you are seated, and they offer a hot/spicy salsa, but you have to ask for it. read more

Went for Sunday lunch today and found the food and decor to be much improved. It was not bad before as evidenced by us driving past carmrlitss and Casa Tina to get here many times over the last four years. The Salsa is very homemade and authentic. My husband did not want to give this place a third chance due to the salsa that tastes like a bad jarred marinara sauce with a little juice but since it is just down the street I begged, how wrong I was to do so. I ordered a chimichanga with green sauce because I know they use a sweet red sauce that makes me feel ill but when it came to the table it was with the red sauce. The server said just pour green sauce on top and I said please stay while I try that, I took one taste of the sauce and said please may I have it as I ordered it. The server returned with the same plate of food but with half of the red sauce scraped off. Sad really, I mean who would not be able to see or taste that insanely sweet sauce that was running into the rice? We asked to see the owner, who was in the building because we saw him and the server said she would get him because he was at the bar. She returned five minutes or so later saying he was gone and she couldn't fix our bill. Seriously? I didn't even get a dinner! We wish great Mexican food was near our home but unless we go to downtown dunedin or clearwater we are not in luck. This place uses sub par food for sure and I mean what restaurant scrapes the mess up away that was wrong, (with a well who knows) and then attempts to serve the food. Gross!!!! My first red flag should have been the fact the place was practically deserted at lunch on a Sunday during peak tourist season. But my favorite Mexican place has closed and I need to find a new place. This is not it. The food is bland, the salsa tastes like they just dumped some Prego in a bowl. The portions are on the small size and you would think the service would be good when theres only 3 people in the restaurant, but you would be wrong. But the icing on the cake, or sauce on the burrito as it were, was when they tried to sneak an 88 cent "service" charge on my bill. When I questioned it I was told it's a credit card fee. When I asked why I wasnt informed of the fee before I paid my bill, the lady wanted to argue with me. I'm not arguing about 88 cents but I will take my money elsewhere. There are plenty of restaurants that value their customers and do not engage in deceptive business practices. I will not be back. Hubby and I went here for dinner after living just down the street for over 4 years. The food was good but the service was slow to nonresistant. When we walked in several of the tables were dirty from previous dinners who were long gone. There is a lot of catcus on the menu which hubby was not brave enough to try something new. The menu has many options and everyone is sure to find something to their liking. We got salsa and chips when we sat down and that salsa was so spicy it could have burned a hole in the table. The second bowl of chips and salsa was much milder and I could enjoy the flavor. I ordered the enchiladas gratinadas rojas and they were very tasty but next time I would order without beans. I did not care for the beans at all they had a strange taste and I prefer black beans to the refried beans. Hubby enjoyed the beans but said that they were a little salty. There are no hours posted so I guess they are open when they are open. I would visit again as the food was tasty but if the service isn't any better I might just have to stick with Casa Tina in downtown. read more

Terrible service. I was there for an hour and never once received a drink refill. Three of my party's orders were wrong but they still tasted ok so we only brought it up at the end. It took the waitress 15 minutes to bring us the check, and only after I walked up to her and asked for it. Once we got the check we told her we wanted to talk to the manager about the issues. Another 20 minutes went by before the manager appeared. We explained what was wrong with the orders and that the waitress actually wrote down our correct orders on the ticket and that it shouldn't have been wrong in the first place. The manager spoke with the waitress and reappeared 5 minutes later. She said that we had asked for the incorrect order, even though our original order was written on the sheet.
