Sat on hold from their automated take out line for over 15 minutes, apparently being first in line for some one to take my order. Ended up not even ordering because at some point I doubt that they were even in the restaurant. It was a Thursday at 6:30 pm there is no way they weren't there. I have been going to El Huipil ever since they first opened in the defunct pizzeria using plastic forks in a parking lot location in downtown Maynard. My wife and I drove the extra mile to support them, so I was thrilled when they opened another El Huipil in Acton since I live close by. However as of tonight they've lost me as a lifelong customer. I ordered the Carne Asada, fairly expensive at $19.95, and asked the waitress for a bit more salsa to go with it. All was good until I got the bill which added another $3.50 for the few tablespoons of extra salsa. When I told the waitress I didn't think it was reasonable, she was quite insistent that I must pay that because that is what the owners require. When I balked, she bought in another waitress/manager who also insisted that I must pay the $3.50 for the salsa. Calling BS, I told them that I understood that if you ordered extra chips and salsa the cost would be $3.50, however I did not ask for more chips, but just a bit more salsa for my fairly expensive Carne Asada. Our first time was at lunch on a Saturday, the places seemed empty and there was only one waiter. We were worry that they will take too long on our food... the waiter was extremely nice !! She broth chips and salsa, and took our order immediately. The food is 4.5 out of 5. The steak was a little chewy but very tasty. And the tacos !!! You gotta try the authentic Mexican tacos. We live in Acton and were afraid of trying this Mexican place because it looked lonely, but for sure we'll be back!!! They just need more advertisement and this place will rock !! While I love the food, I have to say that ordering, esp to go, is incredibly frustrating. I have called and been on a voice mail system loop ("You are next...") so long that I made my husband drive by: they were CLOSED. Other times, EVERYTHING (and I mean **EVERYTHING**) we tried to order was out. More.Than.One.Time???? Tonite: 45 minutes before they will take any to-go orders. I LOVE that they are busy, BUT DO NOT HAVE A TO-GO service if YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT. So, unless you want to eat at the restaurant, forego to-go orders in any semblance of close to peak hours. In the restaurant the servers are nice, but service is slow. I think that they are asking too much of their servers/do not have enough servers. read more

Wanted to give this restaurant a try... Saturday night, arrived at 5:00pm. Waitress took our order & then we asked for chips & salsa ( this is a Mexican restaurant ). "We ran out". Really? Saturday night @ 5:00pm. I would think if it was true - someone from the staff would make a run to Donelan's across the street & buy a few bags of chips for the night. DH has been wanting to try this place. He had heard that the steak was good. Bottom line is we won't return here. We were seated by a man who was not very welcoming. He asked for our drink order, and I asked if they had Diet Coke. He said yes. I'm not sure if they are serving a generic cola, but it wasn't a Coke product. DH ordered Carne Asada with double rice and no beans. Steak came out cold and had to be returned. Rice was bland and looked like someone pre-chewed if for us. Disgusting! I ordered the beef chimichanga with rice and beans. No flavor to the meat and beans were nothing special. The only thing that was above average was the guacamole. It was good. Did I mention we were the only ones in the place? We should have taken the hint! read more

This Acton El Huipil restaurant is filthy! There are spider webs and dead flies on every window sill. The service was horrible and they limited how many drinks wee could have. Some of the food is frozen & microwaved. We will never step foot into it again. They did not make any accommodations to altering any menu items. The El Huipil folks in Maynard have opened a second restaurant under the same name in Acton at the location of the recently closed Monsoon. Same folks, same menu, same food. Steak fajitas were quite tasty. And the place is nicely decorated. Unfortunately the same bad service as the Maynard restaurant. And how could it be otherwise. Same wait staff. We went there for dinner and the restaurant had about 20 flies above our table, they had no Diet Coke and messed up the mixed drink I ordered 4 times! Still the food was decent so we ordered again, figuring we would do take out this time since the restaurant was not great. I called up to place the order and get an automated machine telling me to text my order. I get a text back confirming my order and telling me to pick it up in 25 minutes. My husband arrives to pick it up and they say sorry, the machine is down! We will be going back to our old standby ixtapa, despite this restaurant being 3 minutes from our house. Outstanding Mexican dishes, the best Mole I've had next to my Aunt's. Large portions, great Margaritas (many to choose) and exceptional friendly staff. The fried ice cream is to die for so make sure you leave some room. You get two huge balls! I'm going to become a regular! read more

I've never been to the Maynard location, but I have been to many mediocre Mexican restaurants around New England craving that elusive California taqueria taste. This place hits the mark. No, it's not a hole in the wall, but the tacos were delicious -- spicy, authentic, pure. I also had ceviche, which was excellent, and the chile rellenos were also superb. Decor is classy, service was friendly and prompt, prices are totally reasonable. Just amazed this is in Acton, of all places! I will definitely be back! read more

Went in for $6 Taco Tuesday which they have even during lunch hour making it a great option. I have had better tacos before, the tacos here are slightly dry and packed with flavor. I got a chicken taco, a pastor and a chorizo taco. Each taco comes with your choice of meat, some onions and lemon. You definitely need the complimentary salsa so that the taco doesn't feel dry.the chicken had very underwhelming flavor. The pastor and chorizo were much better. We showed up at 8:55 -- well before their closing time of 9:30. Yet we were greeted at the door by someone clearly perturbed that we were there. The place was empty and we would've bailed if not for another group that came in a moment before us. The host said they had cleaned up the kitchen already but we could sit if we wanted to. I wouldn't even leave one star, but, I have to leave something. Went there with my honey hoping for a wonderful dinner in Acton. We were sat at a booth, even though the woman(supposed Mexican actress) didn't want us to sit at a booth. We ordered a beer and as we were looking at the menu, she came over to ask if our order had been placed yet. I replied no, we are tracing and looking over their menu as we had never been there before. Our server was doing a great job. She came back 3-4 minutes later to ask again, did we place our order. I let her know she was making us feel rushed. She was staring at her employees as they were taking orders, pointing them to do very little thing she was demanding. We asked if they might have any house salsa we could try. No. When we did order, we asked for jalapeños. The server wasn't sure the kitchen had any. We waited. And waited. And asked again. The fella finally brought out what appeared to be a warmed giardiniera sauce. The woman there turned up the lighting as if to be rushing out the guests. The only people she seemed to be concerned with were the new customers coming in. She even sat one family and had them move to a smaller table to accommodate another family of 4. As we were leaving, another lady commented about how they seemed to be rushing out the current customers to accommodate more. There are only maybe 20 tables, maybe...the only way to accommodate more is to add more tables, to expand, rather than rush out the customers who are there paying. It would have been a ok if that one woman didn't feel the need to micromanage everyone in her presence. Mexican actress, pfft. She needs to realize she is manning a Mexican restaurant and is now in the business of accommodating others. Sorry miss lady! read more

This restaurant was a major disappointment. Before I start let me just say that I love authentic Mexican cuisine, particularly street tacos, and it would be so great if there was something available in the Acton area. Unfortunately El Huipil is not it. On the positive side we were greeted promptly and allowed to seat ourselves at the table of our choosing. But it went downhill quickly from there, We were each handed paper menus that were wrinkled and very dirty. While the chips were crisp and salty and the salsa ingredients were fresh, there was no spiciness to the salsa. It was a very bland start. My friend and I each ordered tacos. Because of allergies she asked to have her tacos without several items while I asked to have them with everything. When the plates arrived both sets of tacos looked exactly the same yet the waiter insisted they were what we ordered. Clearly there was a communication problem and no opportunity to get it corrected. He did eventually bring over a bowl of cheese (one of the missing ingredients) but it was a case of too little too late. Where were the other missing ingredients? Overall the marinated beef had good flavor. But the tacos were fairly dry and somewhat bland. There was no habenaro or green chili sauce served with the tacos and since I wasn't doing well communicating I didn't ask for any. Similarly, the refried beans were gray, bland, and totally unappetizing. What a shame because beans can be an incredible side when prepared properly. Two last points, even though no one said anything to us I don't think they serve real Coke products, and the inside of the door was filthy when we left. Truly a sad experience. read more

Absolute worst customer service from the wait staff. We ordered three margaritas and a queso to start. The margaritas were decent and came out in a timely manner. The queso however was rock solid from the cheese being over cooked. I brought it up to the buss boy and he said he would take it back and either reheat it or get us a new one. He then brought out the same queso and it was heated more. The cheese was still solid. I told the buss boy that we did not want the queso and to take it off our order and we will take the check for the three margaritas. Then came the waiter..... he approached me aggressively saying "You don't like the queso? What's the problem? I explained it was over cooked and he interrupted me saying it was fine and how it was suppose to be that way. I then just asked for the check because we wanted to leave. He gave me the check with the queso on the bill fully expecting me to pay for the queso. When I asked to take it off the bill he gasped and had to find a manager. We eventually worked it out and I payed full price for my margaritas. A terrible first impression and I hope this changes. It is in a good location that is looking for a well run authentic Mexican restaurant. I wish I could have given it 0 stars. read more

This was our second-- and last-- visit to this restaurant in Acton. We had Camarones al Ajillo and Green Enchiladas. The Camerones were tasteless (where was the Ajillo?) and all the food was lukewarm when it was served. Took most of both dishes home so they can proper,y heated. The Enchilada was OK, but nothing special. The highly amp'd guitar player was far too loud for the relatively small space, and made it virtually impossible to have a conversation. Service was nonchalant at best. Was hoping to salvage the meal with coffee and flan. Waiter announced they were out of coffee, and did not offer to make more. read more

Probably some of the best Mexican food I've found since moving to Massachusetts 8 years ago. I'm from out west and grew up on Mexican food...El Huipil does a great job. I've been several times and have loved every meal minus the chicken chimichanga...which was overdone, super dry, and rubbery. I'll be back though! Overall great place for mex. read more

We had dinner on a Sunday night. We were hoping for a good local place but disappointed with the quality of the food. From the start The guacamole and salsa was not fresh. All the food was underseasoned and bland. My wife ordered a Cadillac Margarita that had an odd taste to it. The staff were great in that they replaced it with a regular margarita that was just OK. I hope they can improve the food because I really like to have a decent MexicanRestaurant in the area but for now we're out likely go back. read more
