They have great Tamales that you can order for the holidays @$24 per order. I also enjoy their Caldo de rez. This is a spot near downtown judicial court. This place was so bright and beautiful. Loved the cheery environment in general, the people working were friendly and the waitress was so sweet when my son tried to pronounce chili rellenos. Which were good (lacked a little crisp but had good flavor). The green salsa at the table was fantastic, a little slice but a ton of flavor. Everything was fresh, the chips were freshly baked, the rice was not day old rice like at so many places around here it was good and actually had some flavor, the beans were good (the bright orange color of the beans surprised me, turmeric? Regardless they were delicious). Unfortunately the meat had zero spices, not even salt. The only reason not taking off a star is the salsa paired perfectly with the shredded beef tacos and the green chili burger, but a little bit of salt would have elevated the meal for sure. There was no salt on the meat in any of the meals we'd ordered. The coffee was good and strong, the mugs weren't tiny little mugs they actually gave you enough coffee to enjoy and the experience over all was wonderful. My mom spoke Spanish, I border on no sabo, pero intendo and my kids speak no Spanish at all, the menu was all Spanish but the waitress was patient and sweet with every order. We picked this spot from the 4.6 review..... it was not a 4.6. Beans were cold and my picadillo was burnt, my eggs had ALOT of shell pieces in them and the migas had no flavor. Finally, I was able to visit this place. The first time I tried there was such a long line that we went somewhere else. First, I love the neighborhood where this restaurant is located. It's not trendy, its not hipster, it's not fancy, it's not trying to really BE anything. It's a historic working class neighborhood where most of the patrons on weekdays are from nearby warehouses or supply stores. Upon walking in I felt the charm but not anything I hadn't seen before - small, colorful, homey, quaint. It was a bit dark maybe? We got the menu, again, not anything I hadn't seen before. Prices were what you would expect too. The service was great- fast, attentive, salt of the earth type of servers, the kind you know work hard every day and are proud of their profession. So far, I didn't get what the big deal was about El Jacalito? Everyone had told me about it and there were long lines so what was the big deal? Well then came my consumme was served and I got it. IT WAS THE FOOD. So flavorful, so beautifully seasoned, so homemade. In all honesty, the consumme, which was a mini caldo de res, was better tasting than the salpicon salad i had but it was enough for me to understand. I am convinced. The portions are big and you won't have space for more, well that small dessert will be hard to pass too. It had been too long since I had eaten here, and let me tell you I was blown away. We had to wait about 5 minutes and got a seat at the bar and were promptly received and drink and food orders taken. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with the tortilla extra crispy. Came out perfect! The Sauce was delicious, and it has been a while since I have mopped up every drop with a tortilla! YUMMM! I love this place!! We've only tried it for breakfast, it was so good we ended up eating here two mornings in a row. We visited on. Tuesday and Wednesday, they have a steady crowd starting around 8:30. We arrived around 8am and I'd say that's the perfect time to get there, before the morning rush. The Machaca is my favorite by far and for the price, the chorizo and papa burrito is a close second. I love visiting my home town, the culture i miss while I'm away is in abundance at El Jacalito. The menus are in Spanish, I love that! The servers easily switch to Spanish in case your Spanish is rusty and everyone is super friendly. Located in a desolate, industrial strip outside downtown, this is the spot for awesome Mexican brunch. Go out of your way for a plate of kickass huevos rancheros with all the fixings. When my husband and I were visiting El Paso for a few days last week, we knew we wanted Tex-Mex and Mexican food for ALL our meals (I've missed it so much after leaving my home state of Texas for Nashville, Tennessee a few years ago)! I (unfortunately) wasn't super hungry, so I ordered a bean and cheese burrito. Simple? Yes. But it was WAY better than the average bean and cheese burrito. When simple is perfect, it's GREAT. I'd eat this every weekend if I lived in El Paso. And it was LESS THAN TWO DOLLARS. Sorry if I'm Caps Locking a lot in this review, but you can't get a bag of chips in Nashville for under two dollars. Delicious food for less than two dollars? Mind blown. My husband ordered the barbacoa taco special - for $5.75, he got four barbacoa taquitos, two eggs (perfectly cooked, over easy), and a menudo chico (small side of their menudo). He loved everything. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon, the waitress was prompt and took our order after placing the tosadas and chili sauce to enjoy. I ordered the Tampiquena plate ( small piece of steak with an enchilada on the side. Plenty of avocado which I made a burrito out of it with beans. Tasty but lacked a little bit of flavor. South of the freeway, between Cotton and Piedras streets, is a little diner that is snuggled in the heart of the barrio. Here, the decorations are simple, yet rustic, with the aluminum - pressed ceiling tiles reminding me of restaurants I would dine in when I was a child. The restaurants' diners were quiet, engrossed in the meals set before them, with the mexican radio station on in the background. Now, there is something to be said about CLEAN restaurants. They inspire me to trust their food, because if the front of the house is tidy, then the back of the house is probably also clean....and the reverse holds true, also. This place was VERY clean. Table napkin dispensers and condiments were clean and sparkly, ALL tables and chairs were clean and there was not a trace of food or grime on the floor. It's obvious that the staff here puts pride in their appearance, and this attention to detail also translates into their food and flavors. We were attended to quickly and ordered, with the food delivered in just minutes....my machaca was prepared perfectly, with crispy hash browns and good refried beans...the salsa was a perfect accompaniment to the entree. My wife had huevos a la Mexicana which she thoroughly enjoyed, and it was the special (only $3.50). The orange juice was Prices, and the coffee was hot and flavorful, with a tin of cream served on the side. This place is charming and simple, a true example of what old El Paso used to be like. I came to try out this place for breakfast because of the few but good reviews. This place is the cutest hole-in -the-wall Mexican restaurant. The decor feels like you are in some part of Mexico like in Guadalajara. It is clean and it was to my surprise full. The crowd was a mix of older and younger people. They also have Mexican music in the background which adds to the atmosphere. Oh! And the menu is all Spanish FYI! We ordered the huevos rancheros, huevo a la mejicana, and homemade oatmeal. The oatmeal was so good! The huevos rancheros and huevo a la mejicana had that true homemade Mexican authentic taste. The place was full and there was only one waiter. She was very busy so the service was a little slow only when it came to drink refills. The kitchen is open, you can see them cooking through the little wooden window. When I'm in the area, i love stopping here for lunch. the daily special is enough to fill you up and is delicious. Every meal is full of flavor and leaves you satisfied. The waitresses are attentive and nice. They bring out green chile and red chile with chips. The green is amazing, spicy and the perfect mix of chunky and liquid. I've been wanting to hit up El Jacalito for a while now. I finally got the chance this morning and I was really happy I did. El Jacalito's food is very, very good and very generously priced. 7 dollars for the quality food I got is a steal. I ordered the machaca and it was perfectly prepared. My only complaint is that I could have easily eaten more of it. The hashbrowns were perfect amount of crispy, the refriend beans an excellent texture with a very smooth flavor, and the machaca a perfect blend of egg, meat, and pepper. The beef was very good and well proportioned to the rest of the dish. The flour tortillas were fresh and hot from the oven (or whatever you cook tortillas in). I also really loved their homemade salsa. Perfect amount of heat and flavor. If I had any complaints its that they are clearly understaffed and its not in the best part of town. One waitress was handling all tables and taking to-go orders and running the register. My food also took a while. I was the second table to arrive in the morning and several other tables arrived before I left. But I dont think I saw any food come out before I left. Sooo, service is a tad slow.
