After a long day of travel I didn't feel like going far for dinner (staying at the hotel next door). I had a smashed Papa Asado. Scroll down as someone else has a picture of the dish. It comes in a disposable tin tray and looks rather unassuming. I thought it looked small but it turns out there's more food in that tray than what you think. It was absolutely delicious. I think solid is a perfect word for this place. Not the best Mexican food I've ever had, but not the worst. I bumped it up to four stars for the super friendly service and the excellent aguas frescas. We got there late, about an hour before closing and they were literally trying to get rid of the aguas for free. I guess they have to dump it if they don't use it all. It was close to our hotel so we gave it a try. Portion sizes are good. The taco platter comes with six tacos! I had the flautas Chinampa which came with four beef flautas, beans, rice, and salad. I forgot, the taco platter even came with a baked potato. Prices were excellent. We had gone to McDonald's in the morning and spent more. They also cave us frijoles charros for free. Not sure if this was standard or if they were also trying to get rid of it. I would return for the service and the convenience, but if you're looking for life changing Mexican cuisine, it's not here. Staying at a nearby hotel so I grabbed dinner here for convenience. Very glad I did! Holy cow this was a great dinner. I ordered it to-go and it was ready fast. I ordered the Plato Mexicano. She gave me kids for 6 cups of salsa to go from their awesome salsa bar. I only tried three but they were all amazing. One in particular that has the roasted chiles in it was amazing! In one week I've come back twice!! Prices are outstanding! The fresh salsa bar is to die for ! The staff are attentive and friendly. I've gotten both orders to go and was not disappointed. They give you the plastic cups to get your own salsa---- love love love!! And the serving sizes are huge. I have seen this restaurant for years and have never tried it, mostly because the name is fun and interesting but never enough for me to actually want to try it. My first impression, just like my overarching opinion of most El Paso food, is that it is mediocre at best, and disappointing on average. When i first arrived, the servers were all doing something else, some on their phones and others just talking to each other, and i waited about 3 minutes just to be seated. My advice would be for them to take the "wait to be seated" sign down as it seemed like they expected me to seat myself. For food, I ordered the Al pastor tacos because I saw the vertical cooking style of the meat which I rarely ever see and was excited to see this is El Paso. My server brought me a water and chips and the warm rice pudding type bowl (forgive me if I don't know what it actually is I'm from SC lol). The chips were average and the salsas overarchingly needed salt and more depth of flavor. The rice pudding was bland and bordered between sweet and not at all. It was a strange combo. When my tacos came, I ordered the rice and beans alongside it which I regret not getting the cilantro and radishes as one of my sides (I personally think that should be free but I digress). Both the rice and beans were bland. The beans tasted like they were out of a can and the rice was not well seasoned and had very little flavor. I hoped the Al Pastor tacos would make up for it but the meat was bland as well. The tacos also didn't come with a lime or any fixings and since the salsas weren't really good either, it ended up just being an overarching disappointing experience. I wanted to give this restaurant two stars but the food wasn't bad... It just wasn't good. If one of my friends wanted to come here, I would say it's not the best in town but that I'm still down. Hopefully this was just a bad day for them but seeing how literally every single item I ordered and tasted lacked any flavor, I have a feeling this place is just your average mom and Pop that may have been good at one point but have gotten lazy because of the popularity. I look forward to the day when people in El Paso actually start getting serious about their food because most restaurants I try very rarely wow me. This spot is a gem. Stopped here on a roadtrip and it holds up as the best street taco I've had. The meat is marinated to perfection and the salsas are incredible! I bought a tub of the medium salsa to take home it was so good. The owners here should consider selling their salsas separately in jars, I'd be first in line! The ambiance is authentic. Me and my family did not have the best experience here the service was good unlike other aspects of this restaurant. My food was cold and the cilantro still had dirt on it meaning they didn't wash it correctly same goes for the onion. Worse of all my sister found a fly in her horchata water. So happy we stopped off for lunch at Tacos Chinampa our last day in El Paso. Got the Tacos Al Pastor and the Red Chile enchiladas (both by the recommendation of our server). For a whopping $17 it was a pretty awesome meal. The Al Pastor meat was to die for! Incredibly tender and exploding with flavor. It also came with some fried onions, little salad items, and a baked potato. All in all a really fantastic plate. The enchiladas were very good as well (and also came with refried beans, rice, and a salad) but honestly next time I would just double up on those tacos. Comes with fresh tortilla chips and they have a "salsa island" with maybe 12 or so different options to get soufflé cups of. Some of these were genuinely spicy too which was a nice treat. Tried this restaurant for a to-go order almost at closing time. The staff were very friendly and took the order. They provided containers to carry all the different salsa, peppers and condiments. We waited for a few minutes and the food was ready really fast. The restaurant is right next to the Hilton Garden Inn and has plenty of parking. Conveniently located. I've come on taco Tuesday's when it's buy one taco get one free and always like to come during their lunch specials during the week. You can get the caldo de res or caldo de pollo which also includes another plate of choice of red or green enchiladas or flautas or tacos de al pastor or many more of a selection.
