We spent 8 days in California recently. This was far and away the best food we had on our trip. I had the pollo asada while my wife had the carne asada. Large portions of great tasting food. Hidden Gem as others have indicated! Thank heavens for yelp while traveling! We turned to this as a last resort for mexican/latin american food after passing a by a couple of the downtown places which did not seem to fit our bill. Wow, the Carne Asada and the Mar y Tierra were phenomenal! The place was slammed on a Wednesday night with latin american locals and this was after 8pm! Even takeout business was booming! One of the best Guatemalan restaurants in the bay area. That being said, the food represented here is typical Ladino cuisine of Guatemala City. A lot of the regional Native dishes are absent (ie: Jocon,Pepian,Pulique, Kac Ik...etc) however the food is top notch,large portions,excellent handmade tortillas, home made Longaniza sausage very authentic and delicious,very hot Habanero chirmol and the atole de elote was very delicious! We were initially hoping to go to Sol Food but the line was long and we didn't feel like waiting for an hour, so we checked out Yelp and saw that this place was close and had good reviews. Boy, am I glad we made that decision. I had a good feeling when I walked in and saw tables full of Guatemalans seemingly enjoying their dishes. I ordered the bisteck ranchero with a side of platanos and my partner ordered the carne asada. They were both fantastic. The meat was well seasoned, the salsa was flavorful and spicy, and the tortillas were perfectly done. And the platanos! Sweet and soft just the way they should be. I rate 4 stars because the parking sucks. The place is a bit to small, but as for the food don't get me started. The food is tremendously delicious. El plato de sopa de gallina criolla is so delicous very good and yummy! El plato de carne asada damn good price and they give you about 3 slices of carne asada other places they give you just one piece. El atole de elote is very good. Horchata very good as well. I was not pleased with the service, the food did not looked so good like in the menu, and the music was too loud. We drove from San Bruno to San Rafael because a friend of our told us that the restaurant was worth the drive. I thought it was ridiculously expensive. We come to La Chapina in San Mateo and the food is a lot better and they have more Guatemalan Food then this restaurant. In Lucerito they don't offer Hilachas de res, Atol Arroz en Leche, Pacayas en Huevos, Sal Picon, Mojaras Fritas, etc. The Chapina restaurant is a lot cheaper than Lucerito. Lucerito is very expensive. $13.00 for a Carne Asada. It had more rice than Steak. read more

The worst restaurant I have ever been in. Came in with my family 3 adults 2 kids. We waited for out food for about 1 hour and a half and saw everyone that came after us been served and enjoying their food. After a couple of minutes more the waiter came and and said they had not putting our order and that it had been a mistake. My kids and family were hungry and manager never apologize nor approached our table to give an apology. We had to walk out and they were about to charge us for the 3 cups of coffee and 2 horchartas. But they decided not to. Not a good place to visit due to the owners nor waiters having human sense and respect nor professionalism. Not saying humans cannot make mistakes, just saying they should have common sense. I would never visit this place not unless I would like to get diabetes nor die of hunger. I went to a new Guatemalan place on Lincoln today for lunch. I ordered their lunch special of Grilled Chilcken breast with salad, black beans and rice. The place was filled up except for the bar in front of the kitchen area. Everything was clean and bright serapes were on the tables and walls, yet, it was missing the whole ambience thing. The menu is small with limited selections. No water was served to me and my soda was just about gone when I got my meal 20 plus minutes after ordering. the only thing for entertainment was a flat screen with sports in the one corner. The food was ok, the chicken a bit on the bland side and the salad had no dressing whatsoever. no condiments were served to spice anything up. I was relieved to finish up quickly and before I could even be given my check, I was done 30 mionutes after my arrival with no check to even see if the food was fine or anything else was needed. The thing that makes new restaurants is Friendly service, an inviting dining area and a perceived value.. I think I would have been happier elsewhere, so I doubt I will give a second chance to make a first impression.Three stars for presentation.. That is about the best I can do for a place that didn'y make a lasting impression.. read more
