Stopped here while in area as always noted full parking lot. I had the fajita special, $10 on Wednesday night, and hubs had chicken tacos. We had excellent service by Gina and restaurant was very clean. When noticing that more recent customers were being served, Gina learned that the kitchen had somehow overlooked our order and she applied a nice discount to our bill. Order was quickly delivered thereafter. Now for the food,,,,delicious salsa and fresh chips. My fajitas were great - I got the combo of steak and chicken. Large amount of meat and veggies with 3 tortilla shells. Was only able to eat 1/2 of it, so lunch tomorrow!!! My Hub's food was not so great. He had tacos but apparently they did not drain the chicken well and shells were a soggy mess. He couldn't even pick up the second one! He did eat the meat. Based on my dinner, would have been a solid 4-5 but deducted for the inedible mess of a dish of his dinner. Glad it was already nicely discounted and therefore we paid for it. read more

We should have left as soon as we walked in. The place had one table of two people. The rest was empty. There was no one to greet and seat. I had to ask loudly "HELLOOOOO" to get someone to come out. The waitress looked as if we were bothering her. The other waitress was talking to the people at the one table. The menus were dirty. We ordered guacamole at $8.50, and it was avocado squeezed from a bag! No cilantro, no onion, no flavor. I ordered the #1 that had several different things on it. I wanted chicken, and I paid extra. Everything was extra! Even the corn tortilla for the taco was $.25. $.50 for chicken on a TINY taco, and also for the burrito. I asked for some salsa for my food and she brought me two little cups. None for my husband's burrito either! Did I mention that it was TACO TUESDAY!?? That didn't start until 4pm! We told her it was our first time there. Nope, didn't care. Ridiculous! Visiting town but not wanting the tourist hustle and bustle we rolled the dice and stopped for dinner here. The restaurant was clean and well kept outside and the decor and ambiance was great. The hostess who sat us was also our server. She was great. Friendly and helpful. The food was really very good! I would probably add it to my weekly favorites if it lived here. The margarita was not great but not the worst I have ever had. So, I give it a 4 stars! By the way. I had the tamale combo and my husband had the chile relleno, taco, enchilada combo. This was my second time dining here, this time was a lunch visit. The food was again excellent! I assumed the food portion would be smaller for lunch and was wrong, Wow! Bring your appetite and these people serve up some cheese. The salsa is on point. I ordered a number 14 which included quesadilla, burrito and chili releno and my husband ordered a number 21 which came with beans, rice, guacamole and chimichanga. I'll upload his photo later. We stopped in here after avoiding an overcrowded downtown Bay St. Louis. We were greeted quickly and had our drink orders taken. But there was more of a language barrier than usual. The prerequisite chips and salsa were literally placed on the table as we were sitting down. The salsa was good with lots of cilantro - I like that. But, it wasn't spicy at all, and I do like spice. There was no pepper sauce on the table to help it either. I ordered the Chuleta de Puerco. It was tasty. Lots of grilled onions the tortillas were HOT and good. Pico de Gallo was fresh and good, just that the beans and rice were a let down so much that I left them on the plate. My wife ordered a salad with just lettuce, shrimp onions and ranch dressing. We had to explain this 4 or 5 times to two different people: just lettuce, onions, grilled shrimp and ranch dressing on the side. We were dubious if she were going to get what she wanted. And.... she didn't. She got grilled onions and shrimp on a bed of iceberg lettuce. We did not think they would cook the onions. We also had to ask about the ranch dressing again, which they brought to the table. It was Value Time dressing, which I honestly wouldn't eat either. She left hungry and I seriously took her to Denny's after we left. The wait staff was nice enough. We were welcomed to return - which really pained me since that usually makes me very happy. Best Mexican Food on the Coast. El Maguey is awesome. I am a fajita fanatic. There's something about a sizzling platter of meat and veggies that overwhelms the senses. I usually try and get some sort of fajita platter at Mexican restaurants and this was no exception. The combination fajitas had shrimp, chorizo, chicken and shrimp. This platter was the best fajitas I've ever had. Every piece of meat or shrimp was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. Oftentimes that sizzling flatter will char the meat and leave it over cooked. That was not a problem here. The addition of chorizo was a great one. Adding a little chorizo to your chicken or shrimp was so great that I'm stealing this idea and making it at home. So the fajitas were amazing. What about everything else? Awesome as well. The cheese dip was great. The enchiladas were great. The kids quesadilla was great. All great! Service was as good as the fajitas. Even though I wasn't a regular, I was treated like one. Looking around the restaurant it seemed that's how they treated everyone. If I sound like I'm gushing, I am. If you're in The Bay and want great Mexican, get to El Maguey. read more

Want great Mexican food and stellar service in the Bay? Look no further. As I typing this I'm eating my leftover Macho Burrito. It's even better the next day. We stopped in here because we wanted Mexican food and the parking lot was full. Great choice. The complimentary chips and salsa were pretty good. The chorizo and queso dip was awesome. But what was the big star here? That Macho Burrito. It's huge (HUGE) and filled with shredded chicken, beef, rice, cheese, beans, sour cream, jalapeños, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese and it was topped with queso and green sauce. Yum. Our service here was so great and the food was awesome. I highly recommend a stop at El Maguey if you're in the mood for authentic Mexican food in the seafood capital that is Bay St. Louis. read more

It took 7 minutes just for us to be seated and there was only two other people in the entire restaurant. The service was horrible. It took an additional 10 minutes just to get our chips and salsa and then another 5 just to get our drinks (that never got refilled). Once I was finished and ready to pay and leave I had to wait 20 minutes as I watched my server stand by the bar and talk instead of waiting 5 seconds for me to pull my card out. On a visit to Bay St. Louis Mississippi stopped in at El Maguey Mexican cuisine. This is a really good place. It's a pretty large place. Very traditionally done inside and out. Parking is easy out front. The prices are fair. The service was good. The serving sizes were plentiful. They had a fellow playing the guitar and singing traditional Mexican tunes from table to table as we walked in. They offer pretty traditional Mexican fare. The food was good. The owner was walking around and serving Guests shots of Tequila. Everyone was having a great time. read more

El Maguey (pronounced by me: MAA GOO EEEE) , formerly Los Tres Amigos, is one of my go-to eateries here in Bay St. Louis. They offer quality Mexican dishes and at a VERY reasonable price. It would not be unusual for two to dine in for dinner, both with generous servings, for less than $25. My favorite dish is the macho quesadilla and I like to wash it down with their very tasty margaritas! BOTTOM LINE: El Maguey es muy bueno. read more

Normally I would give this place at least 4 stars for the food, atmosphere, and the margaritas. But when my husband and I frequent this restaurant EVERY THURSDAY for months, and when we walked in the last couple times and we were treated like they have never SEEN us before. That was the last straw with us, because obviously they could care less about our minimum $200 per month we spend there. Not to mention if we take our children. We will go to La Chula for now on. Love their food when I dine in, even had my birthday dinner there the last two years, however the to go orders lately, not so much. Today, we picked up our order, and when we got home, a guacamole dip was missing. Not a problem mistakes happen, I called the restaurant and was told to drive back up to get a guacamole, but I have MS and I'm unable to drive, and my roommate was eating and then headed to work. So I asked if I could pick it up tomorrow. He said they are closed tomorrow, so I asked about Tuesday. The manager then asked if I had a receipt. We looked and didn't find a receipt. The manager said oh no receipt, you always get a receipt, and said what can I do without a receipt? So I said, that from now on I will order from La Chula. I have never been treated so rude, for a mistake they made. And they were given a $9 tip. What happened to the great service they used to give? $9 tip plus the price of the guacamole dip and chips! I had been here a few days ago and asked for carne asada and lengua tacos (not on the menu). They were nothing to write home about, but at least they were authentic. Tonight, I ordered off the menu. It was the worst Mexican food I've ever had in a restaurant. Let me start by telling you my background. My experience of authentic Mexican cuisine comes largely from Omaha, Nebraska. Yes, Omaha. Some from Texas, some from San Diego, a tiny bit from Mexico, and some at home from the Rick Bayless cookbooks, but mostly from Omaha, where there are thousands of Mexican (and Salvadoran and Honduran) immigrants, a four-block section of street where the sidewalks are decorated in Latino-themed tiled mosaic tile, and a great pile of Mexican and Latino grocers, carnicerias, panederias, taquerias, and full-menu Mexican restaurants that are authentic, excellent, and make everything from scratch. In short, I was spoiled. Tonight's visit to El Maguey was terribly disappointing. I ordered from the "build a meal" menu, a chile relleno, a cheese and onion quesadilla, and a tamal. The tamal was out of a can, covered in some brown sauce that also tasted like it was from a can, and topped off with watery nacho cheese that was absolutely from a can. The relleno was a poblano dressed in a thick, chewy batter that was more like a bread sock than any relleno batter I've ever had before (which should be a fluffy, thin, light affair made mostly of egg whites with a little yolk and flour in it), filled with what tasted like Mexican Velveeta and covered with that nasty canned nacho cheese. Then there was the quesadilla. I've occasionally, when traveling to small towns in places like Iowa or western Nebraska, run into a flour tortilla that gets crispy and hard when you heat it up on a griddle rather than softening. More like a Lebanese pita than a Mexican tortilla. And I find they taste terrible. That was what was wrapped around the quesadilla, which consisted of more Velveeta-like substance and thickly sliced barely cooked white onion. I managed to eat the canned tamal (I'll call it a "hot tamale") and the relleno (if nothing else, it had a poblano in it), but I couldn't make myself eat the quesadilla. No point in punishing myself that much even if I was still hungry. Someone else in one of the other unfathomably glowing reviews mentioned tv dinners. I had experience with having Mexican tv dinners forced on me by my parents when I was a kid. Most of them were at least as good if not better than my meal tonight. So here's what it boils down to: if you like real Mexican food, ask for the tacos. They have carne asada, lengua, and carnitas, I believe. No sopes, huaraches, gorditas, or tortas, but you take what you can get. And although the salsa's not bad, don't get excited about the chips, they taste like they're out of a bag too. Or they were made a week ago and left out. Or better yet, stay away. If pouring a can of nacho cheese over bagged chips or El Patio tv dinners are your idea of a great meal, order off the menu. You'll be fine. read more

This restaurant used to be Los Tres Amigos, but went through a complete redo around April of 2012. I used to eat there when it was Los Tres, but the food went downhill and I found the other Mexican restaurant across the street to be better and more authentic. The employees at El Maguey were there from when it was Los Tres and I believe the same owner as well. They have always been very nice. So at the moment, the food is better and the atmosphere is much better. The bar is excellent and they have TVs so you can watch the game or whatever. I consider much of the food to be Amerexican, but I have to remember that this is Mississippi... I believe most people will find the food to be good to excellent depending how big of a Mexican snob you are. They have customized many dishes for me so I believe they can make it as authentic as you want. Like most ethnic restaurants in MS, they probably have to cater to a large crowd of taco bell and TV dinner eaters. I seem to get the same server every time I go and he is excellent and friendly. My recommendation is to give it a try. It is probably the nicest atmosphere and decor in the area in Mexican restaurants. The friendly people and cold beer in El Maguey win me over and keep me coming back. read more

Staff is always friendly. Seems there is always a special on food or drink. Really enjoy Taco Tuesday. The shredded chicken tacos are yummy and my husband enjoyed the beef. The steak quesadilla is big and nicely seasoned. The guacamole salad is a perfect side. The refried beans make a wonderful dip. Only suggestion is to make the margarita machine colder! When El Maguey first opened, we were floored with how great the food and service was. We were eating here at least twice weekly, often more. Then it slowly started going downhill. Both food and service were sub par, and their clientele dwindled. We finally joined the crowd that was staying away. Fast forward a year or so, and we decided it was time to try it again. We had noticed there were more and more cars there for lunch and dinner. WOW! What a change! Management has stepped up and really turned this place around. While not quite back to their opening greatness, they are close and headed in the right direction. Service is wonderful, very cheerful and attentive (take THAT, La Chula). The food is very fresh, served hot, and good portions. The salsa is freshly made, nicely chunky, and full of fresh cilantro. The choriqueso dip is huge, easily enough for four people. The owner is posting regularly on Facebook, and touting how great his restaurant is. I agree, and am happy to see them promoting it again. This is easily the best Mexican restaurant along this portion of the Gulf coast. I just hope they can maintain it at this level, and even ramp up the food to what it was at opening. Especially, the Poblanos Rellenos. The version they cooked when they first opened were the best I had ever had, very large poblano peppers stuffed with chicken, beef, shrimp or any combination. Then topped with a scrumptious cheese dip. The ones served now are still very good, though much smaller and far less stuffing. In any case, this is a very, very good restaurant. Clean and pleasant, live music on Friday night. Just a wonderful place to relax and have a good meal. We are sooo happy to see that they have come back to life! Huge fan of Mexican food, this place is definitely the best Mexican food joint in the Bay area. Varied menu, reasonable prices, endless chips, El Maguey has got everything you look for in a restaurant of the style. The service can be a little slow at times, but the atmosphere is lively enough that I never fell like I'm waiting.
