It has been too long since I last visited this establishment. That will be rectified as I will add this establishment to my rotation. I had a great shredded chicken smothered enchilada topped with green sauce, melted muenster cheese and sour cream. Their shredded chicken is so juicy and flavorful. I will ask them to put less sour cream next time, but it was a very satisfying enchilada. Great food and service, and a very clean restaurant. So we went into the restaurant around 4 o'clock on a Thursday afternoon for supper. This is not our first trip to the restaurant. They have an extensive menu at amazing prices. The place is spic and span clean. Plenty of room, soft music, outstanding service, and drink specials. There is nothing we can fault with this place. The portions were huge. I had their Aztec burrito, which is my go to. It is grilled and filled to perfection. Their combination plate is heaping over the side of the dish. Their hot sauce for their chips and sauce is about the best. This is really, really a great Find. We are from Arizona so we know Mexican and Tex Mex, and this place rocks it. read more

FYI: This review is for Salsa and chips only, to go. I wanted to try them before getting a meal. Chips are on point, aka, fresh and not greasy. I got mild salsa and "Mark Sauce" next up from mild. Mild is def very mild. Mark Sauce has some good heat to me (some may consider it mild, I don't consider my heat scale weak, but not the most intense seeker), also a flavor I can't describe, but unique and very good. Aside from heat, both have very good flavors of their own. Looking forward to trying their food! OH and service was great in my short interaction! Good job to the team overall. Ordered Steak and chicken fajitas. They had absolutely zero flavor. Tasted like boiled meat, and again zero spices or seasoning. Extremely disappointing, especially for the price. I have never had such bland food from a restaurant before. We won't be back. read more

I haven't written many reviews lately, but after trying this new local restaurant, I felt compelled. In a word, the entire experience was terrible, and I won't be going back. I went with my husband and our two sons (15 & 13 years old). Thoughts: ATMOSPHERE- It looks like a nice place from the outside. When walking in, the bar is on the left and all the tables (maybe 16 total?) are all on the right. I thought the set-up was awkward, because the tables are set up like a cafeteria (no dividers, just an open area with lots of high top tables). The lights were bright and everyone looked at my family when we walked in. It wasn't awful, just awkward. The bar area looked nice, though, and they have a full bar including Michigan beers on tap. SERVICE- If not for the service, I would probably give El Maguey 3 stars. Firstly, nobody greeted us when we entered. I waited at the hostess stand for about five minutes. I was being patient , knowing it was new and I used to be a server as well as a hostess, so I know that it can be busy at times. The phone rang and the hostess came over, took the phone, didn't say a word to me, and walked away. A couple of minutes later, she came back and wrote our name on a list. My family sat on a bench that runs along the window for about 20 minutes while we waited. We were finally sat, and then found menus ourselves. A family was sat behind us a couple of minutes later, and they had drinks and chips before we ever saw our server. She did apologize for the wait (15 minutes), and I was still trying to be understanding (even though we were starving!). She took drink orders, and brought us our drinks (no straws, we had to ask later). About 10 minutes later, she took our order. I ordered a large guacamole with chips as an appetizer ($7) for the table, and when she eventually brought it out out, there was only about 1-1/2 ounces of chips (for my family of four). We inhaled them, but there was still a lot of guacamole left--it took another 10 minutes to find our server and ask for more (then 10 more minutes until she brought them). About 40 minutes after we'd ordered, we got our food. The restaurant was full, but not super busy and our server did not seem rushed. There were several servers and a host, so I had no idea why the service was so slow). It seemed like nobody knew what to do or how to run things. They need a manager out on the floor. We didn't see our server again until we were finished eating. As I said, I am very understanding when it comes to service, and I don't expect perfect service--but it was SO BAD that I felt compelled to review. FOOD- The food was okay, but definitely not worth the price, which I'll write about later. The guacamole appetizer was very bland (the whole family said it had no flavor) so I just added some table salt and stirred it in, and it was much better. It is made from scratch though, and the chips are made on site, which is always a good sign. My younger son and I ordered flautas, my older son got chimichangas, and my husband got the Cali burrito. We each ordered a side of beans and rice ($3 extra per side). The flautas were pretty good, although small (I ordered three). My son liked them too. You could barely see any sour cream or guacamole on them, however, so I would ask for extra when ordering. My husband loved his Cali burrito. My son hated his chimichangas, and after tasting it, I agreed it wasn't very good. None of us cared for the rice, which was clearly convection rice and undercooked to the point where it was slightly crunchy inside. Flavor was mild. We thought the beans were just okay--your typical retried beans at most Mexican restaurants. Prices- I couldn't get over the prices, though, when we got the bill. For a beer, water, two Cokes, side of guacamole, and our dinners, plus 15% tip (I NEVER tip less than 20%, but this service was that bad) the total was $80! That's a LOT for a family of four. I felt sick about spending so much on so-so food and bad service. (My son didn't even eat his chimichangas or sides--he's not a picky eater, but he didn't like any of it). OVERALL- The slowest service imaginable, despite it not being very busy and having enough servers (we were there for two hours). Decent food. Very expensive for the experience. Not worth the time or money. I'm bummed, because I love Mexican food and this is just a couple of miles from home! If you're looking for good Mexican, try Amigos in Woodhaven, Angelina's in Wyandotte, or El Camino in Toledo. I would skip El Maguey. read more

OLD LOCATION !...Fantastic service and FOOD!!! Authentic Mexican. Definitely a restaurant we will go back to! The only 2 things I would say bad is (1) the bathroom was dark with the light on (literally) and you couldn't see! (2) They had a 1960 hand towel dispenser to wipe your hand after washing them !!!! Wanted to show the picture for the younger people that may not know. ******************************************************* UPDATE 12/7/19 at their NEW location ... this place is a JOKE when it come to the CHIP and salsa... MASSIVE CHIP SNOB!!! You can't have chip and salsa until you order a meal, then they'll bring it out...(small portions) and FORGET about refills! they will give you and issue, telling you that you can't have it, unless you pay extra. ALSO... your DINNERS do not automatically come with rice and beans , that's another up charge. Food today was SUBPAR, chicken enchiladas were cold. Chicken fajitas was ok..? Up here in the state of Michigan on a job assignment and was looking for a place to have lunch with some co-workers. Came upon this hole in the wall, El Maguey which serves Mexican cuisine. The place looked very nice, clean and has some nice ambiance to it. The waitress brought us some nachos with salsa. The salsa was absolutely bland. It lacked salt and flavor. We elected to get some queso and had some tomato and cilantro mixed with it. It was ok for taste. For lunch I had the chicken enchiladas with the green sauce along with rice and refried beans. Again it was ok. I wasn't wowed at all. The chicken was a little on the salty side and the green sauce was ok as well. I can assume that the Mexicans were the cooks and everyone else working there were Newport locals. The service was pretty good as the waitress followed up on me and my coworkers to see if everything was ok. I guess it's ok to assume as well that this place is new and they need to improve on the food as far as taste and authenticity. Enjoy! read more

First let me say I do Love the food here, and we visit often, and its clean, BUT beware you will have slow service and lots of forgetting of drinks, and food, Ex: yesterday I tried the fajitas for the first time, and I thought they were a little bland being I only had rice and beans, then seeing another table with the same food, as I was leaving after dinner was over, the other table had lettuce sour cream guacamole, etc, and I asked if that was separate and she said it came w/ her fajita, so I had no idea that was missing from my fajita dinner, so I ate dry food, I would have complained but I was paid and walking out when I saw that. Also, drinks ordered never came so I just say if you're not in a hurry and are patient, the food is good, service not so much. read more

The gentleman on the phone who was the manager had the rudest attitude when we called about it and asked what do you want me to do about it??? obviously fix it my guy. After the experience my party of 7 had over the weekend none of us will ever return! I live in the area & knew another table of guest who witnessed the interaction that happened with our party and called me the following day completely appalled! Lets start with the atmosphere, nice contemporary look, to small & the acoustics are VERY loud not enjoyable you are yelling at the person next to you. The staff is NOT good. Stood at the bar 30 minutes waiting for a seat, they were busy so we understood but tried to order a drink & was never served anything? A bar bill could had added up quickly but they didn't seem to care, couldn't even get a drink of water to take a pill! Once a table was clear 40 mins of waiting we sat down. We needed another seat & asked a near by table of 2 that had 2 extra chairs they weren't using & it was no problem. We ordered drinks AGAIN, 10 mins go by they never came. Meanwhile the staff must have gone in the back & complained about us borrowing unused chairs(something the staff should have done!) & the (owner/cook?) came out & YELLED at one of our party goers!! Totally unacceptable! The whole (very little) restaurant was watching! It was embarrassing. Since they had such poor service & never brought as so much a water we got up, walked out & took our group (and our large food/bar bill) & went to a MUCH BETTER place where service was immediate, friendly & the food was AMAZING! El Maguey's food is ok but its worth the drive to go a bit farther in either direction & go to Mexican Gardens or La Fiesta, you will get way better sevice & food! read more

Ok...so I broke down and was hungry for a chili relleno...went there about 4pm...and guess what? They were out of them already...wth?? So I ordered the burrito grande I think it was called. Tbh it was very good but not what I wanted. I asked the waitress do you charge extra to use a CC...she said...well yes we do...if not...we would have to pay it...REALLY??? Not the right thing to say if you value your tip lol...and then I asked...do we have to pay extra for another plate of chips and salsa...well yes she said as if it was stupid of me to ask smh. Maybe in a year or so I will be hungry for a chili relleno but will call first to see if they have it...bring cash...and some chips from home lol. This family-run restaurant would get 5 stars if rated only on the food, which is not the typical cookie-cutter Tex-Mex and leans toward authentic family recipes. They do a steady carry-out business along with a dozen or so booths for dining in. The Chiles Rellenos are some of the best I've eaten, and I've enjoyed Mexican meals everywhere between here and Yuma, as well as in Nogales, Juarez, Ensenada, etc. Keep in mind that there are vast regional differences in the local cuisine within Mexico. The Guacamole is made to order, and the slow-simmered pork would be delicious ladled on a flip-flop. There's no risk choosing items from the menu, as even the standard tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas are done to perfection- no microwave-melted yellow cheese product going on here. The chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce are a real winner. But, do yourself a favor and check the ever-changing specials. There you'll find gems like Barbacoa, Caldo Res, Tortas, Pozolé, Fish Tacos, Calabaza, etc. If your inclined to like Vaqueros or Amigos or Mexican Fiesta, this probably isn't the place for you, since El Maguey doesn't do the microwaved fake yellow cheese. The parking lot is a disaster since the liquor store opened next door, but it's all part of the experience. Well worth a try. read more

Considering Vacquero recently had a "infestation" I am even happier that I like El Maguey. They are primarily carry out, but the food is good and made well. The parking lot is a bit of a hoot, but the liquor store next door has tons of goodies, so it's worth parking a few spaces further and getting some craft beer to take home :) read more

I usually order once week. Normally great 4 stars. On 9/28/21 my flaming cheese looked like half order. One green pepper in the small amount they put in to go order. I have ordered this multiple times to eat next day for lunch. Wasnt enough . The amount looked like should of been free sample. Very disappointed. I normally look forward to ordering food there. Got into habit to support the restaurant they just opened when covid lock down was in effect. This never happened before. Hope not new norm. read more

Mom & Pop Taco stop. Great chips, decent salsa (mild and loose). Cheese dip is also available. Basically just melted cheese. I've had the burrito and their enchiladas and tacos. All good. One of my all time go-to's. Chips are thin and crisp. Salsa fresh and flavorful - mild or heat it up. Fresh cooked beans and most standards can be chicken, beef, or pork. I give this place 5 plus stars for their honesty. I left my sunglasses there after having dinner last night and I was pleasantly surprised that someone found them and put them off to the side. First time eating in the new spot. Got here around 545pm, not too busy, three waitresses and yet it was close to 10 minutes before our waitress showed up. We then waited at least another 5-10 minutes for the chips and salsa. The hot salsa had no flavor and very little heat, I preferred the mild by far. Ordered the combo to get a taste of a few things. The taco w ground beef was really good, full of ingredients. The cheese enchilada was pretty bland but not much is expected from a cheese enchilada. The steak part wasn't very good. The steak was mostly tough so it was hard to eat with the corn shells it came with. Even after cutting it up I was still having issues. We also got a burrito with sauce, he said that was pretty good. Wife got beef tacos and those were good as well. Will come again for sure, gotta give em a few more weeks of being open. read more
