Plaza Azteca is now called Palacio Maya. Regardless of what you call it, and the "People love us on Yelp" sticker on the front door notwithstanding, the food just ain't that good. Honestly, I don't like to give family restaurants bad reviews; before I give a local place 2 or fewer stars, I make damn sure I've eaten there enough times to know. Four times is enough. The only specific thing that I'll say is that the steak in my steak burrito (like several other items I've tried there) was over cooked, and the rice was dry and hard. And unlike anything I've ever eaten in a Mexican/Tex-Mex place, the burrito was topped with a zig-zag of yellow mustard. WTF? Well it did look cool, but it tasted like crap. POSITIVES: The margaritas have a very pleasant taste. Not too strong, but they taste pretty much the way I think a marg should taste. (My wife disagreed, by the way. She didn't even like the margs). I'd say that the table side guacamole is pretty good. It's better at El Vaquero, but it's pretty good here. Also, the service was great; friendly and fast. The flan for desert was pretty decent, too. I met a friend here on a Thursday night and sat out on the patio since the weather was amazing. The restaurant was not too busy a few families inside and three other tables on the patio. The food was good I ordered the shrimp and chicken fajitas with rice and it's advertised with a side of lettuce, a side of guacamole and shredded cheese. The plate came without the guacamole and the waitress said that it would be extra, we were charged extra for a side of guacamole. The amount of cheese was a little skimpy. They provide 3 small tortillas and charged for an extra 3. The chicken and shrimp was good and plentiful. Chips and salsa great while waiting for food to come. The margaritas were ok, it had a ton of ice which made it water down fairly quick. We would've asked to send it back and not have so much ice but the service was already slower than normal. When we didn't order our drinks as soon as we sat down it took a while for the waitress to come back to take our drink orders. Excellent: margaritas, tableside guac, and chille relleno. Terrible: the beef (Taco Bell-esque), the enchilada sauce (canned?) the rice and beans (refried beans from a can). We went here after the Toledo Zoo. If it was closer to home I would come back for the guac and margaritas. I got the chili relleno with just cheese and it was very good (I have no idea if it was "authentic"). My chicken and beef enchiladas were not worth eating--I stuck with the guac and chips and let my husband have them. My husband got the lobster enchilada which he liked but I thought was weird. This is not "authentic" Mexican food. Anyone who calls it that probably just A) likes the food here and B) has heard other people use the phrase and wants to sound smart and cultured. Second time here. If you like sweet tea this is your place! Salsa decent. side of Gauc is so tiny and hardly and avocado mostly onion and tomato. Seafood is odd with celery. Mushroom quesadilla shell super salty however mushrooms very tasty. Bean burrito very good. The waitress was nice however I had to go looking for her and still waited for her to return to our table. a couple of our items did not come with our meal and we waited a good bit of time for the waitress to bring them to us.(guac and sour cream) NO real interest in returning. read more

This is another Mexican restaurant in the Toledo area that is pretty authentic, in my opinion. The food is tasty, and the atmosphere is relatively quiet, except for the festive Mexican music playing in the background. Plaza Azteca's customer service is really good. If you want guacamole, someone will come to your table and make it for you - for about seven bucks. The only downside to this place is the price. There are other comparable restaurants in the area where you can get the same quality of food for much less - like San Marcos, or El Vaqueros. Since there is a dearth of Mexican food in Boston, I wanted to eat as much of it as I could stand while I was in town. After a yummy previous meal at Mi Hacienda, I decided to come here for lunch because it was closer. For a chain, I was pleasantly surprised. The decor is super kitsch, but who cares. The waiters spoke Spanish, even when answering our orders, which I kind of appreciate. The place was dead on a weekday. Not only do you get chips and salsa for the table, but also an herbed crema which was delicious. The salsa could have been hotter, but that's what hot sauce is for. I also ordered a side of guacamole, which was bland for my tastes. It could have used more onion, garlic, and seasoning in general. I ordered chicken enchiladas with ranchero sauce and the bf had beef fajitas. We also got a chicken chimichanga to split. My enchiladas were delicious. The ranchero sauce was good, the chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, and the rice was perfect. The bf loved his fajitas, and I thought they were perfectly cooked, though they only came with one tortilla which was odd. The chimichanga was also delicious and covered in cheese sauce. We took at least half of the food home and it was just as good the next day. I haven't had Mexican food this good since I moved to New England. I can't wait to eat here again next year! read more

*NAME CHANGE* Went looking for Plaza Azteca from a friend's suggestion but they must have just changed their name to "something Maya". Sadly, both the food and the service were very average. Went on a Sunday night and there were two other couples in the entire place. Toledo has so many small family run mexican choices now so these places need to step-up or stand-out from each other. If you already have a favorite of these family institutions - stick with yours. Personally, I'm beginning to go for something more like Te-ke-la's in Perrysburg (near Levis Commons) as they at least offer a fresher twist on the classic family mexican dishes. I wanted to like this based on my friend's typically dead-on recommendations but it was very "middle-of-the-road". Yelp also needs to amend the name of the listing so please don't go looking for a building with Plaza Azteca on it. This sits right next to Mancy's BBQ joint. read more

Bad. Toledo supports way more Mexican restaurants than the typical city its size. Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of what it supports are quite bad. This place fits in well with that trend. For an inauthentic Mexican restaurant, or comparative to the overload of Mexican restaurants in Toledo, I think this place is pretty decent. It's no San Marcos and it's nothing you'd typically find in the west (from my time living there), but that's okay. Not everything has to be "authentic" so long as it's good. I've had some good food here and some mediocre food. I've been here 3 or 4 times and I've settled on the nachos. The cheese blend is good and they actually give you too much chicken, in my opinion. They're good and edible. The guacamole cart always good, from what I can tell. There's not much of a "show" or any sort of obvious advantage to having them make it right in front of the table, but it's better guacamole than what they have prepared in the back. The margaritas are very sweet, but I find them pretty enjoyable. The service has always been good. I don't have any real complaints, aside from never being "wowed" by any of the food. On the other hand, I've been disappointed by other Mexican restaurants in town. As a result, when I'm feeling like Mexican, I usually think of stopping here. read more

A breath of fresh air for a Mexican Cuisine in Toledo. Having been to Mexico and lived most of my life in Los Angeles I finally found a restaurant that is high caliber as authentic restaurants in a major metropolis. Inexpensive and true ethnic flavors that I had missed for so long is now here. Not like the Americanized "Carne Asada" as one might call them this is actual skirt steaks (bistek). So my boyfriend I got here at 730 and they close at nine. As we were waiting To be seated a waitress walked by and said no mas (trying not to read into it but thats pretty rude). so we sat down finally and felt rushed the entire time we were finishing up our drinks at around 840 and they were literally cleaning the floors next to us with a broom, which is extremely unprofessional. Also I got a patron margarita which was loaded with sour mix. Toledo has a million Mexican restaurants but this is the only one I really want to eat at consistently. The decor is kitschy but what else do you expect? The portion sizes are large and worth the money. The margaritas are also delicious. Staff is mostly attentive. They seem to have additional menu choices that many of the Mexican restaurants in the area do not have, if I remember right like a Spinach Enchilada... The only downside is the waiting area to be seated is TINY so going on a packed night can make it a bit difficult.. read more

Well prepared food at a very affordable and expected price for a mexican restaurant. The food also came quite quickly, less than 15 min, which I feel is also a prereq for mexican. The food was tasty and the portions large (even tastier the second day) . Our waiter was a bit inattentive, however the rest of the staff picked up the slack if you simply asked them, and keep in mind this was our first time there. The table side guacamole was a treat, however, I would ask for less salt/cilantro...once again it was our only time there. Plaza Azteca is pretty good Mexican food. Knock your socks off good? No, but pretty good food. I don't know what it is, but this city has so many Mexican food options. This was my first time going, and I felt as though it was competitive to the other Mexican restaurants in town. I went on a Friday night with three friends and when we showed up there were people waiting outside it was so full. I guess that fact alone shows how popular the place is. When we finally got seated the waitress was polite and was ready, attentive, and had a steady pace to coming to check on us. We ordered a pitcher of margarita - I'm not sure if they really put alcohol in it. No that I was looking to get myself severely intoxicated, but the alcohol adds a flavor that is common to margaritas, and I don't feel like it was there. After eating the meal we all decided the food was okay. It was your everyday Mexican restaurant. Overall, I'd recommend it to a friend if you were in the area. If you were near some of the other Mexican establishments, go there. BUT if you're looking for something amazing - go to San Marcos. read more

My wife's vegetarian fajita was way cover cooked. Wasn't a sizzle to be heard upon serving. Only seasoning was grease. I had a mushroom burrito, potato burrito and cheese enchilada dish. Burnt, small and tasteless. Chips were cold. Salsa was served in a small stainless steel bowl inwhich after three cold chips you had to dive to get any, Coffee was burnt, Ordered water with lemon. No lemon and no refills, lucky my wife doesn't drink much while eating as I do, because I need to finish hers. No towels or hot water in the restroom and in disorder, Not that busy and staff was no where to be found. Booth back was torn from top to bottom. like someone kick it. Music was so loud that I could not her my wife half the time and booth behind was yelling at each other to be heard which added little to the experience. My wife stated that I could wait for the whole restaurant and still have time to lean. I have work in restaurants since I was 14, have a degree in Hospitality Management, and managed/owned several restaurant. I have been here several times and in general have been delighted, especially with the price/quality of everything we have tried. They have the best guacamole in town as far as I am concerned. We went on cinco de mayo though and had some of the worst service I have had anywhere for awhile. They gave us beepers for the wait even though there was only one table in front of me. Then they did not use any beeper a single time that I saw, just sat on a whim. After 30 minutes of a 5-10 minute wait I asked what was going on since several tables were sat that came in after me and I saw that my name was crossed off the list. After informing them of the mistake they seemed unconcerned and eventually sat me without even as much as an apology. This was only the start of a bad night and even though they were "busy" the restaurant is small and the level of service compared to staff was poor. This is the go-to place for me and my picky girlfriend. Service is always quick and helpful. Your order is often out five minutes after you place it. Not overly authentic but that is not what the restaurant caters to. While this is usually bad, I have never had to wait for a table even on Valentines Day! Truly a hidden gem in plaine sight. The only problem with this restaurant is that I always order the same thing (Burrito San Jose). It's really terrific. When we go with friends, I get to see the other food and everyone we have gone there with has thought the food was great. Still can't figure out how they serve so many people so fast.
