My favorite Mexican restaurant in town by far! My go to is Fajitas Mix with Cheese Dip. Never forget the cheese dip!

Haven't been here in awhile and still hasn't changed. I don't think people know how great this place is. It's kind of hidden. The servers are so nice and attentive. This is a dumpy, hole-in-the-wall restaurant with awesome food! You can always find great coupons in KC Valumail or in the Entertainment coupon book. Their chips are wonderfully light, warm and delicious. Their salsa is just right. I like their combination platters, but they also do great shrimp dishes. The tamales are pretty tasty too. Not all El Magueys are created equal. The EM on Valley View Parkway by Costco is sooo gross (I've tried it several times and each time was a disappointment). The one in Raytown is actually surprisingly good! I love getting Burrito Jalisco there because they do an awesome job on the pork. read more

Susan D hit it right on the spot. I LOVE ALL the El Maguey restaurant locations (sucks that I dont live there anymore, but I think about it constantly) I suggest going to the location on Noland Rd. I grew up on that location since I was 10 yrs old and still hold it in my regard as the best authentic mexican food in Missouri. Start off with the complimentry chips and salsa, order a cheese dip (or 2) and go to town! Then get the carne asada (great portion sizes, enough for almost 2 meals) and you are set. For years I've loved El Maguey - the great ingredients, great prices, and authentic recipes...it was truly my go-to place for Mexican food, especially the one in Independence. However, my trip there this afternoon changed ALL of that! I go in and there are two waiters in the back talking and staring at me as if they don't understand that I'm there to eat. When I ask them if I am to seat myself, one of them grabs a menu from a stack on some random table, places the menu on another table, nods, and walks away. I mean, El Maguey has never had great service but WOW...not a word from the "hostess!" No, "hi"...no nothin'! The lackluster start didn't get any better from there! I had a drive-by offer for something to drink, a chips and salsa delivery with a dirty bowl...speaking of which, what happened to the chips at El Maguey?! They used to rock! Now, they're like cheap grocery store chips that they heated up in the over for three minutes just to trick up! Terrible! Anyway, the not-so piece de resistance was the meal. I got a no. 5 lunch special and the food was lukewarm! With some cheap shredded cheese! What happened to white cheesy stuff! I just kinda stared at the meal for second and mustered to east half of it because I was starving! I have NEVER had any but hot food at EL Maguey. Needless to say, no one stopped by to see about my meal, refill my soda (the only tasty part of my meal), or to try their hand at acceptable customer service. To top it all off, the cashier (the only timely element of my visit), asked me if everything was okay. I politely told him the service was terrible and he nervously replied with, "Thank you." It pains me to say that all the naysayers were right. I'm not sure when El Maguey became El Mal Sabor, but I am on the hunt for my next go-to place. **Note: I am normally not one to write reviews so take that into consideration if you're still considering making a visit. Quick, friendly service, and absolutely delicious Mexican food. This is not a fancy place as you may guess from its exterior. It is typical for an authentic Mexican restaurant and that means no frills except on your plate where they belong. BEST seasoned ground beef on any taco I've had anywhere. Also some of the most superb and spicy guacamole you could ever try. I liked every dish I tried as did my husband, and we're both somewhat picky when it comes to Mexican food. El Maguey is a star for yummy lunches and should be tried if you're not worried about the beauty of your surroundings. With that said, the dining room is very clean and a lot larger than it looks from the outside. I also noticed a separate dining area where they were having a baby shower during our visit, so that might be something to consider if you live in this area and need an informal gathering space. read more

we've been visiting El Maguay since we moved to KC in 1993. It has Always remained consistantly good. Got take out last week. Taco salad was fresh, and my wife's chicken chimichanga was perfect. the refried beans are the best in town! Prices are rising a little. read more

I've been a huge fan of this place and all the other ones out there. I always go with the chicken fajita nachos, I LOVE the cheese sauce best I've ever had. Absolutely my favorite Mexican joint I've ever been to! Been coming here for years with no problems. The food is amazing and it's reasonable priced. Plus the portions are huge. Expect to have a snack or a whole meal later on. The decor isn't the most fashionable but who cares. The staff are so friendly and always make sure you never run out of chips and salsa or drink. I've ate Mexican all over Texas, New Mexico, Colorado , and Southern California as well as the Midwest. The El Maguey on Noland Road is as good of a working class Tex Mex place as I've found. It aint pretty, but it is cheap and the food is plentiful. It is well seasoned (hotter if you ask for it), and fresh. The crowd tends to be blue class with several Spanish speakers on hand most evenings and lunch hours. If you like decor and high prices, skip this joint. Good food cheap, in a neighborhood restaurant is this place's specialty. read more

I wish I could base this review on both the food and service but unfortunately this visit didn't last long enough to even order food. I support adults with developmental disabilities, on Monday May 6th we decided to go here for lunch. We arrived with a group of 10 people at 11:00 AM when the restaurant opened. We were greeted by the host who offered to seat us. The gentleman walked us past the large empty tables that sit large groups such as ours and led us to the back right corner of the restaurant by the kitchen assumably to be kept out of sight. The man then pulled two tables together not leaving room to accommodate the individual in a wheelchair that had came to dine. When I told the man that there was not enough room for us the man pulled dishes and silverware from a table placed at the entrance of the kitchen and placed it next to the other tables. This is the point that I told the man that we would be leaving due to how we were being treated. This was the only point that the man then offered to seat us in a more spacious in the opposite corner of the restaurant. But not all was bad because after leaving we went to a different Mexican restaurant at the corner of 23rd St and 291 and we're treated with exceptional customer service as well as food and we're seated in the front of the restaurant with all of the other visiting at that time. read more

I have been going to this restaurant since I had moved from Texas in 2002. The food is very good. My kids will only want to eat at this Mexican restaurant. They will not go back to the other ones that we took them too. The food here is very good. I love the chicken soft tacos and the rice. It's the best. My son loves the cheese enchiladas. I used to eat here twice a week until recently. I gave the cashier a $100 bill and only received $8 in change when I should have received $68. The manger refused to check the register or the camera. He was blatantly ripping me off. Will never eat at this shady establishment again. read more
