Been meaning to write this review. I recently tried Matador for the first time. I ordered a menudo and man, it did not disappoint. The meat was tender and flavorful. The menudo broth was delicious and not greasy one bit. I've only had their menudo but will try something else soon. At the time of this review I had menudo for the second time and it was delicious. I also want to give a shout out to the nice man at the register who looks like the owner as he was pleasant and friendly. I've had carne asada Tacos on two different occasions as carryout, and they were excellent! The tacos are big and very filling. I work about two minutes away from this restaurant and coworkers often go to pick up lunch orders. What happened? Coffee tasted really old. I asked for steak and eggs with beans . Wanted the steak medium rare...but it came out well done and bland. Asked for the eggs over easy. One egg was cooked well done and the other egg over medium. How did that happen when both eggs were cooked together? And the eggs tasted rubbery. The salsa for the chips tasted like tapatio sauce. SO GOOD!! Let's start with ambiance. You walk in and it's what I look for in a Mexican restaurant. Let me explain, you want it nice. But not to nice. You want working class. Working class means portions for the working class. With a good rating. It was a "A" I knew this cause I seen the sign. On the right as you walk in it had like terracotta awnings coming off the walls. Nice decorative touch. Straight ahead is the counter where you order and pay. To the left of that was a self serve refrigerator. And in this were all the staples. Corona, Dos xx, Modelo and Mexican sodas. Plenty of tables. The men's room was clean and smelled good. Big plus. The service was top notch. Definitely for the working class. The server talked to me like we were friends. Gave me my chips and my beer and a little bowl for the salsa of your choice from the condiment bar. She chopped it up with all the customers the same way. It wasn't stuffy it was comfortable. Checked on me in a timely manner. She was a Rockstar! On to the food. SO GOOD!! The chips and salsa were good. Chips a little on the thin side. But crisp and went perfect with the salsa, not pico. SALSA! I was enjoying my chips and salsa with my cold Modelo, when she walks out holding what was a majestic platter with a chili verde wet burrito. Covered with verde sauce and melted cheese. On the side was fluffy Spanish rice and a medley of lettuce and a sprinkle of tomatoes. And I will tell you, I was a little disappointed when I didn't see any refried beans . Until I cut into it . They where inside being all naughty with the big chucks of tender pork. Again SO GOOD!! The seasoning was on point. Impeccable!! So good I had to order another beer. SO GOOD!! This place is great. You can taste the authenticity and passion in every bite. Fish tacos were fantastic with the side of rice and beans. El Matador platter had a tiny portion of everything with the nachos, taquitos, flauta, and quesadillas paired with guacamole and sour cream which was delicious. Overall the food itself was a solid 9/10. I am giving this place a 5 star not only because the food is that great but because the service deserves all the attention. Our servicer was great! Always checking in with us. Also, the owner or chef who checked in on us asking if we were okay felt comforting. You can tell they care a lot about their business. While dining, we noticed most of their customers were locals and they had a lot of locals coming in which is great to see in this community. This restaurant felt like a family, very interactive and caring. I'd love to come by and show my support to this restaurant by going weekly. This place is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. It's a place my wife and I keep going back to for more than 10 years. The place is cozy and low key but the food is fantastic. The staffs are all nice and friendly. Their foods are all yummy but the item that I love and order the most is the Al Pastor wet burrito with red sauce. Our next favorite is the Lengua wet burrito in salsa verde. The homemade salsa is awesome. read more

I love this place! If you're craving Mexican food, you definitely need to give them a shot. Food is authentic and very tasty. They have some of the best chips and salsa I've ever had. The carne asada burrito is delicious and very filling. Staff is very friendly, and they also aren't stingy with their salsas and toppings like other restaurants. The restaurant is small and has a peaceful and intimate feeling which I really like. The ambience in the restaurant is very nice and relaxing which is why I usually choose to dine in. As someone who was raised in a super mexican home with a grandma who cooked everyday , I can say el matador has the best menudo you can find in a restaurant. It's authentic as if grandma made it. I always asked people how can you get menudo from a restaurant , can't be me. Now I go atleast 2 times a month ever since I moved to Azusa because my friend Bob always mentioned it to me. The rest of their food options are really good as well but that menudo is just too good I wish they had it every day. sometimes I can't wait til Saturday. I can't believe I have been coming here for years, and never reviewed! First of all, there is a mistake. This restaurant is in Irwindale, not Baldwin Park. Irwindale and Arrow Hwy. But in an area where you are spoiled for choice for Mexican food, I cannot understand why people go to La Tolteca, Max's or Ray's Tepeyac. You can get amazing food, be treated nicely and really feel as though you are in Nana's kitchen. Or a 'hole in the wall' in Boyle Heights. Food is off the charts great.
