I've been coming to El Matador for thirty years--yes, three decades of chips, salsa, and memories--and it's still one of my all-time Denton staples. We pulled out all the stops for this visit (10 adults and 4 kids), and once again, they did not miss. Our waiter (the same one I've had since forever) is phenomenal. Truly one of those people who remembers faces, orders, and somehow reads your mind about when you're ready for a refill or more chips. The service here is quick, friendly, and consistent every single time. The food? Always hot, fast, and delicious. From sizzling fajitas to crispy tacos, every bite tastes like it came out of the kitchen five seconds ago. The kids cleaned their plates, the adults were happy, and not a single dish hit the table lukewarm. That's rare these days. And the margaritas... chef's kiss. Strong, smooth, and perfectly balanced--none of that syrupy stuff you find at a lot of spots. These are proper margs made by people who know what they're doing. Even though I didn't snag many pictures (it was a surprise dinner), it's one of those places where the food speaks for itself--and it's been doing so for decades. If you're looking for authentic, dependable, and family-friendly Mexican food with small-town heart and big flavor, El Matador is it. Denton classic, through and through. Pros: * Legendary service (my waiter deserves a lifetime achievement award) * Hot, fast, consistently delicious food * Strong, balanced margaritas * Family-friendly atmosphere * Thirty years of pure consistency Cons: * You'll crave it again the next day. * Margaritas may ruin all others for you.

Service was really quick during lunch time. It was not that crowded at all. Now for the food that's a different story... the fajitas were ok. Chili's fajitas are a little better. For the chicken enchiladas, there was something off with it. I couldn't place it. It may have been the chicken was cubed rather than shredded. The Mexican rice had peas and carrots. Threw me off.

Our server was fantastic. Our food was amazing ! I had the shrimp cocktail that I couldn't find on the menu but the waiter assured us it was available and let me say it was soooo good so so good . House margaritas were delicious too !

Delicious food. I had the brisket chimichanga with rice and beans. The food was fresh and hot and delicious. Nice service too. Writer kept salsa and drinks full without asking him to. Definitely coming back again.

The service was friendly but not attentive. Had senor returned to my table and asked how my food was, I would've asked for cilantro and onions to season my food. The chips were served warm with a heavy mound of seasoning salt on a few chips. The salsa was spicy but had no onion, garlic, cilantro, or flavor. Ordered queso w/chorizo and 3 cheese enchiladas w/chili con carne, and refried beans & rice. Nothing notable here, just a mediocre meal, lacking in flavor. Didnt eat it all, no to-go box needed.

One of the things I love about Denton are the mom and pop restaurants serving up some delicious food! Such is El Matador! My go-to here are the cheese tacos. They are the best cheese tacos I've had at any Mexican restaurant ever. I have never had bad service here on what it is now four visits. They are always fast and friendly and very efficient. The ambience is pretty old-school. Old-school Mexican restaurant that is. It was probably pretty hip in the 70s and now that vibe is kind of making its way back and they are original!

Everything we ordered was delicious. The guacamole tasted super fresh, the queso was flavorful and came in a generous portion, and the salsa had just the right amount of kick without being too spicy. The only small hiccup was the chips situation--they give you big portions of guac, queso, and salsa, but the chips come in a tiny bowl. (Literally 10 chips) very sad for 6 people to fight over so little of chips. Not a huge deal, just a bit surprising. We also tried the margaritas--they had great flavor, though they tasted absent of tequila. Overall, we really enjoyed it and would definitely go back...maybe next time we bring our own chips! :)

If I could give La Fondita Mexican Restaurant six stars, I would legally change the rating system…read morejust to make it happen. Let me set the scene: I walked in expecting a casual meal and maybe a decent taco. What I got instead was a borderline spiritual awakening wrapped in foil and served with rice and beans. First of all -- the giant piña colada. When they say giant, they are not messing around. This thing arrived like it had its own gravitational pull. I'm pretty sure I saw a small family of tourists orbiting it. One sip and I was transported to a beach that doesn't even exist on any map -- coconutty, icy perfection with just enough kick to make me briefly consider texting my boss that I've moved to an island and won't be returning. Then came the beans. Listen carefully: I don't throw this word around lightly -- perfect. These beans were so good I genuinely paused mid-bite and just stared into the middle distance reevaluating my entire life. Creamy, rich, seasoned like someone's abuela whispered ancient secrets into the pot. I would trust these beans with my taxes, my passwords, and honestly my emotional well-being. And the corn tortillas... dear lord, the corn tortillas. I have had tortillas in many places, including at my own abuela's table -- and saying this feels like confessing a sin -- but these might be the best I've ever had besides abuela's. Warm, soft, slightly charred in all the right places, like they were handmade by someone who has been perfecting this craft since before I was born and possibly before electricity was invented. If I could build a house out of these tortillas, I would. I would live there. Happily. And then--just when I thought things couldn't escalate further--the huevos rancheros arrived. Eggs cooked to that perfect sweet spot where the yolk still has a little rebellion left in it, laid over a bed of everything that matters, all tied together with a sauce that refuses to be anything less than unforgettable. It's the kind of breakfast that makes you question why you ever settle for anything less in life. Comforting, bold, and somehow both rustic and wildly impressive at the same time. Everything else on the plate? Outstanding. Rice that actually deserves to be eaten and not just politely ignored. Salsa that sneaks up on you like, "oh this is nice--OH okay there it is." Service? Friendly, fast, and somehow emotionally supportive. Atmosphere? The kind of place where you immediately feel like a regular even if it's your first time. Final verdict: If you are anywhere within a 50-mile radius of Denton and you are not eating at La Fondita Mexican Restaurant, you are making a series of deeply questionable life choices. I came in hungry. I left changed.

We started things off right with chips, jalapeño ranch dip, and queso, which is honestly the only proper way to begin a Chuy's visit. The queso was warm, creamy, and exactly what my soul needed, and the chips with that jalapeño ranch were the cherry on top. Speaking of cherries, we also got the Tito's cherry limeade, and it was the spring we didn't know we needed to bounce. Crisp, cold, a little dangerous in the cutest way, and honestly adorable -- the perfect little kick to start the meal. Our waiter was top notch: kind, attentive, and somehow always there right when we needed something without ever hovering. That kind of service makes the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable. For food, we ordered the Baja shrimp tacos, and when I say the shrimp is BIG, I mean it (and no, we're definitely not out here flattering any men ). The shrimp was cooked perfectly, flavorful, and absolutely the star of the plate. They came with rice and beans, and even though I forgot to ask for the cilantro lime rice , I was still super happy with everything. We also got the steak fajita Tex-Mex burrito bowl, and every single bite just kept getting better. The steak was tender, packed with flavor, and once it all got mixed together with the salsa and scooped up on the crispy tostada, it was perfection. This meal was such a good reminder of why Chuy's became a favorite for me in the first place -- fun atmosphere, great food, amazing service, and one of those dinners that just hits from the first chip to the last bite.
