I've been coming to El Meson de Melquíades since I was a child, when they were located across the street from the current location. This visit was my first one in the last 15 years and some things never change. The restaurant has plenty of dishes for every palate, service is great even when busy, and you are treated like family. My favorite starters are the corned beef alcapurrias. I cannot say enough about them. The soup of the day was a plantain soup with bacon, and it was good. For main entree, I went with the veal sirloin with sweet plantains. I emptied the plate. For dessert, I had the best crème brûlée of recent times. read more

This is a restaurant up in the mountains of Cayey, about a 20 minute drive from the main highway, along winding roads. I took Dramamine beforehand as a precaution and was glad I did. We came on a Friday evening before sunset and were able to find parking right away, and were seated with no wait. The view from the back porch is nice but I would not come out from San Juan just for it. You have a view of an inner vale and some houses facing the restaurant. My in-laws who live in the area were very unhappy with the service, given the prices of the food - service was slow at the end of our meal. Nevertheless the food was quite good. The oxtails (Rabo de Buey) were the best dish at our table but the rice that came with it had some hard parts. My father-in-law had half a serving of veal with half a serving of javelina, which he enjoyed. The desserts were all great! I would swing by if you are in the area and want to try some less common cuts of meat. Those unfamiliar or u comfortable with twisty mountain driving should leave before nightfall. read more

This is my first visit to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and my uncle took me to your restaurant. Everyone was very friendly at our arrival seated as quickly and the wait staff was there to perfection. Each morsel that came to the table was more delicious than the previous. I can't say enough how wonderful the atmosphere was and how delicious every bite that went into your mouth was. The place was packed and this was not even their busiest night so get a reservation and prepared to wait for at least a little bit but not to worry it is more than worth your wait. Because I was there with one of the islands better known citizens we were also treated to a visit by the chef and some of the rest of the family and they were delightful. Even the staff talks about the owners as one team and as a family and are a well oiled team. I did not partake of the desserts because I was so full and I didn't want to lose any of that deliciousness still left in my mouth. While you're there go out to the patio in the back and take a look at a view that is worth the visit to the restaurant all on its own. This is my first trip but not my last trip I will return to this island and I will return to this restaurant. read more

This is one of those experiences that makes you go, huh what happened. First this place is very popular, there aren't a lot of good alternatives, and many people seem to like the experience here. Second, it's "clean", but I would challenge the cleanliness standard. Third, the menus are wonderful, beautiful pictures of awesome looking food, lots of choices, and ordering is quick and easy. Fourth, the food comes out, looks a little different than the pictures, and then you try it.....my best opinion is underwhelming. All the hype, the menu, the service, and nothing. It's a damn chain restaurant that doesn't really serve PR food and I'm not sure what it is that makes it so popular. Maybe the same thing that makes McDonald's or Taco Bell so popular, the similarities in experience are uncanny. read more

We finally made it to the Meson de Melquiades and it live up to all the hype. It was in our "hit" list for quite sometime and it was worthy. Great service, amazing qulity of food. The "alcapurrias" with corn beef are a must. We had the lamb and the buffalo (yes, buffalo) as they have specialized in bringing unique meats such as kobe, boar, etc. Both were tasty and amazing presentation. Great views and can live to the hype of being a gem in the middle of the mountains. For dessert, we had the manchego flan and was uneventful. Too sweet. read more

Quiet on a Thursday for lunch with family and friends. Restaurant is clean, great service and excellent food. Not the typical local food you find in most places in the mountains in Puerto Rico. Varied menu, great presentation and excellent food choices like the pastel en hoja, corned beef alcapurrias and much more tasting appetizers. Must visit destination. This was our first time visiting, and definitely won't be our last. This place great for entrees, food, drinks and their service. Prices are moderately high, but for the taste and quality of the food it was worth every penny. We ordered deer and hog chops, stuffed churrasco, and octopus for entree. I visited this so called "restaurant" with my family last Sunday... As soon as we entered and sat down I was unable to hear the "waitress" less than two feet in front of me...I asked her to turn down the volume of the music and she said that there was a wedding in the private room. Hmm not so private if the people paying to eat and enjoy a conversation can't even talk because it is too loud. The restaurant should soundproof those rooms if they want to lease them up for live music events. The service offered by our waitress was just terrible. She was very pushy and unprofessional...I had to ask her several times to let us look at the menu. One of my family members is Vegetarian, that shouldn't be a problem but they do not even know what a vegetarian is and less what they eat! The "Chef" came to the table and offered to prepare a Mushrooms, Celery, Onion and Lettuce plate... That doesn't even sound creative. We asked them if the mushrooms were portobello and they didn't know what kind they had. Our alcapurrias were burned, the arroz mamposteado was old, the chicken was nasty, tostones were obviously fried with really old cooking oil... The salad brought to the table was a joke...lettuce with chopped onion... like really? Thats it??? McDonald's have better salad options!!! The dressing for the alcapurrias was basically salsa with oil. Wow wow wow... Well I sure don't recommend this place and sure won't waste my gas going up that mountain again to eat crappy food. I hope the "Chef" decides to actually go to culinary school sometime soon... read more

This restaurant is on a very high point of Cayey. It's on a very curvy road but it's very much worth the trip. The place is very clean & airy. Great for a group but also nice for just 2. Service was very amiable & prompt. The drinks were very refreshing & they do have some nice wines. (Just have a designated driver that will be willing to drive the road!) This is a better version of "comida criolla", almost like your abuela's, but kind of better. The alcapurrias were very good. They had a lobster bisque as special which was sublime. So much flavor of lobster & not of cream. I didn't ask, but it felt cream less. Even up in the mountain the fish in green sauce was delicious. I had a special of their version of osso bucco, which was made with pork & didn't remind me of that dish, but was extremely succulent & good. My mother, who was dreaming of "guanimes con bacalao" loved them. (Her only complaint: she would've had more!) this are like a polenta in a cigar shape with a salted codfish stew. Leave room for dessert, as they're all homemade & fantastic. The coconut-cheese flan is something I'll be dreaming about. Their papaya in syrup is so good, redolent of cinnamon & cloves. (Tres leches, not that good) It's a trip I'd like to repeat! read more

I have been visiting this Restaurant for over 30 years!!! Still one of my favorite places to visit. The staff is almost like family. The alcapurrias are to die for!!! For appetizers I strongly recommend the "Alcapurrias con corned beef". They are simply delicious! The prices of plates are adequate and the view from the balcony of the restaurant is spectacular. The service is friendly and attentive but at times you get the feeing that the staff tries to speed-up your exit to accommodate other costumers . We came here for lunch and the entire family was satisfied: from starving teenagers to seniors! Great appetizers in the bunuelos de bacalao and their legendary corn-beef alcapurrias.
