I'm not sure why this place doesn't have a higher rating than Agave but El Mexicano is way better. The staff is always friendly, restaurant is clean, and reasonable are prices. Our food has always been great, especially street tacos and this is coming from a woman raised on authentic Mexican food. Im always critical of the Mexican restaurants I try out in all states east of Texas but this place is way more authentic than the flashing fancy places like Cactus Cantina and Agave. read more

went here with my friend to grab a bite to eat since it was nearby. we sat down and the waiter asked what we wanted to drink, but we waited for near 30 minutes and no one came back with our drinks which is ridiculous. people that came in after us were given their drinks immediately and we still weren't given ours, so we finally decided to leave and go elsewhere. read more

Nice hideaway spot, BUT it's not worth finding! The chips were stale and the sauce was spicy with very little taste. They brought a the wrong beef burrito but did change it out quickly BUT I wish they would have just kept it. It was so bad I only ate 1 bite. When the waiter saw that I hadn't eaten it, he just took it away and said nothing! What a waste of money! The chicken tocos were ok at best. I'm sorry to say that I will NOT be back! Im Texan, so it's fair to say I have high expectations of Mexican food. That's not to say that I am only appeased with some high brow fancy Mexican joint. Quite the opposite actually; some of the best Mexican food I've ever had has been from food trucks, gas stations, or hole in the wall dive joints. My review of one star is almost exclusively based on the fact that the food at this restaurant is terrible. First off, it's not very flavorful. Second, it's cheap quality. Third, in an attempt to make the food more flavorful they have piled on the lard, butter, and cheese which makes it terribly unhealthy. I went here on my lunch break. I work close by. I waited a really long time before the waiter took my order. My food just never came. By this time my lunch hour was over and I still didn't have my food. I finally found the waiter and asked to have the kitchen put it in a to-go box because I had to get back to work. Tried ordering a cherry sprite, waitress said no we don't have that. Later I asked a different waiter and he said sure and it was brought to me!! Horrible waitress!! She was slow and rude! We ended up ordering from another waitress that we had to wave down! Our food took over 45 minutes to get!! The waitress never checked on is or brought us our check. We had to go to front counter to get it, and check out! Horrible dining experience!! The waitress name was SARA U. Horrible experience. We were seated quickly but waited over an hour for our food. It was so loud in there there was no casual conversation at our table. There were children running around like they were at a playground while their moms slammed margaritas. They had a girl in there playing a guitar and she was pretty good but she had her amplifier turned up to the point that you just couldn't understand what people were saying. My husband and I recently moved to Fairhope from Southern California where there seems to be a Mexican restaurant on every corner. Our favorite there was an excellent and unpretentious mom and pop place that won a lot of awards and will be a tough act to follow. My husband and I have eaten at El Mexicano twice and while the food was pretty good, we're looking forward to trying some of the other Mexican restaurants in the area. Bring your sunglasses. The lights are fluorescent. Every wall is painted in a different neon color. I asked what kind of tequila was in the Margarita - Jose Cuervo. I asked what the best tequila they had was - Jose Cuervo. My drink was the same neon color as one of the walls. My "vegetable" plate was a chille relleno, with greasy breading and greasy cheese. Wait, everything on the plate was greasy. It was near impossible to distinguish the taco from the enchilada from the tostada. Can't complain about much here except any place that has tortilla chips this bad cant get over 3 stars. Both times we went they were burnt. Cheese dip was runny. When we we first came in, we had to wait 40 minutes and there were tables that could hold our party that were clean. As we sat down, we ordered our drinks and they got them out and left them on a table next to us. It took them 5 minutes for them to finally give us our drinks. When we got our food, it was cold. The tortillas were squishy and smelled horrible. I needed to use the restroom, so as I went in, it was disgusting! Toilet paper on the floor, the toilet wouldn't stop running, and the sink just kept dripping water. For all of the food we got, it was a little over priced. I have eaten here on several occasions. Each time was very good. I usually have the #2 special (I think) which has A burrito, taco, and a tostado. I haven't had to wear my sunglasses yet, and my wife's food was great also. I am writing this as I am at the doctor with my wife and am very hungry. This place came to mind as I truly love their food. I think it is a mom and pop restaurant and I have always been greeted with a welcoming warm smile from pop.
