My favorite Mexican restaurant. We order from here all the time and they never disappoint!

The health department needs to come and investigate this place! (1) illegal workers (2) the wife cooks the rice at home not at the restaurant that's not sanitary! (3) there is such a rat infestation that it's spreading to the residential building that they are connected too! They store food in the basement and the basement has many rat traps due to the infestation!!!!! The rats are huge!!!! You have to see them on the traps! The landlord showed the residents. They are coming from the restaurant!!! People do not know what they are eating! Notice if you get sick after. The workers don't use gloves nor do the females have their hair up! Reliable neighborhood spot! Only critique is that their items may be a bit salty at times, but the taste is on point! Everything is very affordable too, compared to city prices. I got 3 Carnitas tacos to-go for only $3.50 each!! The staff wrapped each taco separately so it doesn't get soggy altogether. All the taco fixings come with the order as well. I've also tried other dishes here (Torta, Chicken Enchilada) and they were all pretty solid. They're opened till late as well, so it satisfies late night cravings! read more

Recently visited this restaurait was and I was very disappointed with the food I brought home. In the beginning, the portion was much better. But now they reduce the portion less rice. Small pieces of steak. Worst of all, price where up. And I was very disappointed with this because they're not enjoyed this plate. My advice is stay away if you can. In the beginning on the first time this place at this restaurant, the food was spectacular. The servants on a takeout, one sufficient, I recently when, today, November 2nd 2025, and I am very disappointed for what I brought home. The portion of the rice was less. Food is ok, nothing out of this world, but they take forever with the food. Every time we are here, it's at least 30 minutes after the girl takes the order. Be careful with the price. I didn't realize until last week, my bill came out too high and check the menu, they over charge everything. We think we have found our go to Mexican place in the area! Portions were huge and everything was just so delicious and well seasoned. My husband tried the steak quesadilla and I got the chicken burrito Al mexicano, which came packing with plenty of savory chicken, rice, beans, and fried broccoli with mashed garlic cactus. I had to get mine without dairy this time but it was already so good - I can only imagine how extra dreamy it would be with cheese and sour cream. Husband usually isn't a huge fan of Mexican food, but he inhaled his dish and finished mine. Will definitely return to try more of the menu selections. read more

Mexican restaurants and food in the Sheepshead Bay area has always been quite limited and it's unfortunate that there aren't more considering it's one of my favorite cuisines. (And Taco Bell DOES NOT count folks). I've been going to El Mexicano for many years now on the corner of Avenue U and East 15th Street, but not really because they ever served amazingly delicious food, but more because they were just plain convenient. Being one of the few Mexican restaurants in Sheepshead Bay and probably the only one within the surrounding blocks, El Mexicano always served solid food, but depending if you dined in or picked up, the experience could be painful. The restaurant is very small with just a few tables, but believe it or not, they actually expanded within the last few years. There are 2 flat screen TVs in the restaurant, which are typically turned to the Spanish sports stations. They serve your usual Mexican fare in Tacos, Burritos, Cemitas, Enchiladas, Flautas and misc. meat entrees and it's all reasonably priced. In the past, I've tried their different tacos, burritos and enchiladas and all of it has always been decent. As I usually say, none of it will blow your mind, but it's solid and considering there aren't many Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood, it will do. For some of the tacos, shockingly, in the year 2020, they are still priced at only $2.50, while the more desirable options are priced at $3. Meat options include goat, chicken, beef, salted beef, fried pork, tongue, marinated pork, shrimp and lamb. The meats have always been real fresh and there is plenty of it to fill the tacos. However, the lack of other supplemental ingredients (cilantro, onion, tomato) has always been noticeable. Don't get me wrong, there was some, but just not as much as I've seen from other restaurants. As for the burritos, they are MASSIVE. They definitely don't skimp on any of the ingredients, especially the meat and rice. In addition, they include tomatoes, lettuce and a good dollop of sour cream. However, at times the flavor can be lacking, so its hit or miss. The enchiladas are my wife's go to order here and once again they definitely give you your money's worth. The order always includes 4 enchiladas and a ton of rice and beans. It's actually pretty good and tasty, but the serving can be overwhelming. Overall, the food at El Mexicano is really a hit or miss. I've always liked their tacos and the meats inside, but they skimp on supplemental ingredients. And my note about dining in versus picking up. If you do decide to dine in, be prepared to wait a while as service is very slow at times. On our last visit, my wife and I just waited, waited and waited before we were able to flag down the waitress to take down our orders. The restaurant wasn't too busy, but every time the waitress came out or we got her attention to come over, she was busy doing something else. The food is a solid fix for anyone craving Mexican food, but the lack of attention while dining in can be a turnoff if you're in a hurry. read more

Hidden gem!!! This place is literally out of sight but once found you will really appreciate everything. Great portions and amazing seasoning and taste. We came here randomly after getting bubble tea because we were hungry. I love Biria tacos and they had that option so I figured why not give it a try. I'm so glad I did because it was BUSSIN lol my girlfriend loved her chicken and we even took half a chicken to go. I think the best part was the price. My go to place for burrito. For less than $20 I got a chicken burrito ranchero, chorizo gordita, and a goat taco. Literally this place could charge so much more the amount they give, but thank god they don't. I order so much without worrying about the price and I end my meal there without feeling NOT like I was cheated, but they were cheated. The burritos are humongous. It was my first time having a gordita and my verdict is that the bread part tastes like chinese fried dough. Wouldn't get it again, but again, I don't feel cheated at all. The gordita was huge as well. Even though it wasn't my cup of tea, I didn't think that I lost anything from trying this dish out. I do wish that my orders are better wrapped in the aluminum because the oils spill out and gets all over the aluminum. If you're slightly on the clean freak side, you'll end up not knowing where to grab. Update: they started doing so! we all love a restaraunt that grows :) The quesadilla tasted like the burrito plus more cheesy flavors. It has the same ingredients inside which is why I said that. I'm use to a two ingredient (one meat, one cheese) quesadilla. 10/10 would recommend this place. For all my local followers, this place is more of a bang for the buck than el gallo taqueria and it's small but tasty pulled pork burritos. In fact, el gallo taqueria's burritos are half the size of el mexicano restraint & coffee inc's. My husband and I have been here a couple of times. We find it that the tacos and rice dishes are okay, but the other items are really good. Their chalupa, taquitos, tostada and tortas are our favorites. Particularly the beef chalupa and the lengua torta are our go to's. It's the only decent Mexican restaurant around the subway area. I love this place!! Whenever I have a craving for Mexican food, I order from them. I absolutely love their guac and chips, and would highly recommend their tacos. They're decently priced ($3/taco) and just eating one hits the spot. Two makes me really full, and 3 is just a lot, at least for me. Definitely a bang for your buck. For $2.50 a taco they give a generous amount of meat and they also include some veggies. The tacos also came with some hot sauce they put into tiny plastic containers. The torta weighed as much as a rock. It was surprising they could fit so much into a roll. Avacado lovers will definitely enjoy the torta here, I felt like they added one whole avocado. Although there was plenty of food, I felt like the flavor was a little bland. The hot sauce that came with the taco was only a little spicy, with no other flavor. The only flavorful part of the torta was the avocados. Good spot for some Mexican food. Good place to get some take out or stuff yourself. I've had better Tacos from food trucks/carts. Pro: Decent food, Food comes out fast. Decent portion sizes. Cons: I'm a bit surprised when they charged me extra for the main ingredient. ie: Tacos are $2.50 according to the menu. But if you want chicken add $0.50 to that. Why not just price it as $3.00. Same for beef, shrimp, Pastor. What comes in the $2.50 taco- just tortilla and onions? That was the case with other dishes too. Seems a bit deceptive. Total $60.00 for two people. That includes a $8 tip. Don't come in expecting authentic Mexican food. Find other spots for that. I've had better Al Pastor. Don't bother ordering that. Don't expect a typical restaurant service. They don't really have servers who constantly refill your water. Actually they didn't offer me any water or even an empty glass. How could I not have reviewed this place sooner! I ordered here last June on a sweltering day when we craved a diverse meal with foods we less frequently eat, which is to say, not Cantonese. El Mexicano is just 3 blocks from our usual place and we're so glad we were to order from here as the delightfully tasty and fast and good lunch was so memorable as to have earned 1 re-order since then which is a lot given we eat almost nothing but Cantonese if eating out in the area. While I forget the order which sits elsewhere in my Yelp Order history, the summary is that the memories of the fresh cilantro (a good indicator of all other freshness) & the tender beef and moist pork were all super happy times. The happiness of the staff while picking up the meal speaks volumes as we believe happy food comes from happy chefs & staff. The exterior is largely the same as so many area Mexican with the color motif of their proud flag with a seal which is custom to the restaurant and brightly colored signage. The interior is heavily used but still well maintained and the cooking area is entirely visible and clearly very clean. I was having a craving for great Mexican food while at work. I remembered this place. It was a staple in the take out rotation prior to Covid. Now that I'm back to in-person I thought I'd give them a try. After work I went there. Initially I wanted takeout, but once there I made my order to stay. Great decision, the customer service was great and the food was phenomenal. I also order an enchilada mole to go for the folks back at home. I took a menu because the prices have changed. I usually order online but I decided to come here one night for dinner with my friends. As I stepped into the restaurant, I was not greeted by anyone. I was not sure if I should just sit down or wait to be ordered so I asked the waitress. She said we order in the front. So as I sat down to look at the menu, I see high school age kids chatting and laughing at the next table. I thought they were also eating there but they actually work there. They were pretty loud... Most of the tables were dirty and we had to wipe it ourselves. I ordered chicken tacos and beef tacos. The tacos were okay, I had better. The portion was pretty small. I also ordered a burrito. I like the burrito a whole lot more! The burrito was really good. They gave a big portion. I would recommend ordering the burrito and taking it to go. They need better management. read more

I don't know if I would go out on a limb to say it's 'authentic' Mexican but its not bastardized Tex-Mex if that makes sense. It definitely really is delicious and it all boils down to just doing the solid basics really well. They prepare good meats, tacos, and burritos. Stuff them to the brim. You won't see refried beans and everything covered in melted cheese here. I went with a steak burrito after much indecisive careful contemplation and not eating all day. The burrito was filled with a really nice garlicky rice, which was surprising and the steak was flavorful. Upon request they gave us crema (not gloppy sour cream), and a red and green hot sauce. But like vats of hot sauce. I'm so glad this place predicted my love for sauce. It's also definitely cheap. Almost everything on the menu is under $10, so go crazy. read more

After coming here recently, I can say I will never come back. First all, the wait is unacceptable, I called for a pickup and I was told it'll be ready in 10 mins so I came after 15 mins and I waited...and waited...and waited. For a total for 40 mins and still no order but I was being patient and because from my experience I knew the food would be worth it. The good part of waiting was I got to observe the kitchen staff cook. One of the front girls had a band aid on her index finger and was flipping tacos on the grill and handling money. Gloves are optional I suppose. The kitchen was so hectic but the restaurant wasn't so busy, 2 tables and delivery orders? I feel let down, this was the only Mexican joint near me. They were the perfect size and quite filling. Very flavorful. Tacos even come salsa. They accidentally made an extra chicken taco and gave it to me for free so that was nice! Local spot for good, cheap food. The tostadas are amazing, same for the guac, burritos, and ENCHILADAS!!! The serving size is heaping for the enchiladas, topped with sliced avocados. My only qualm is their service isn't consistent and orders often end up incorrect. They hang up on you at the end of all calls lol, it's just weird to do to me when the word "goodbye" exists. Not even trying to be a whiny customer... but c'mon. Example of their inconsistency, placed a pick up order for 2 enchiladas. One order beef, the other lamb and both with sauce on the side. Received two beef, sauce in the enchiladas (it gets real spicy lol, that's why we asked for it on the side). Additionally, sometimes your enchiladas don't have avocado on top lol.
