I'm new to the area and always looking for a good Mexican restaurant. This place really disappoints. Customer service is not the best. I ordered a carne asada burrito, I live around 20 minutes from this establishment and when I opened the bag, I noticed oil in the bag. Once I opened the burrito from the foil, the burrito was drenched in oil. For an instant I thought my place was going to be invaded because of the excessive oil. I was introduced to tortas at this restaurant in the 1980's? They were amazing. We moved. I've since tried hundreds of tortas across the region, country and internationally. Just came back after 30 years - the place looks different outside but the same inside - but these remain the perfect tortas. The red salsa was better than the green, the horchata was a little watered down however, my mom enjoyed her menus and tacos de lengua, and my dad said his carnita torta was good also but could use a little more guac and seasoning. tl;dr: El Michoacan is an overrated Mexi-CAN'T restaurant. I probably have tacos once a week, and in my opinion, El Michoacan has to be one of the worst Mexican restaurants I've been to in a long time. It's one of the few restaurants where I ended up throwing away my food. Meh. Meh-xi-Can't. First of all, the design and feng shui of this place is all out of whack. When you enter via the main entrance, you face the kitchen. Then you have to make a decision whether to go left or right. I went right and it was the wrong choice because the ordering area is to the left. Having a restaurant split into two is definitely weird and very unwelcoming. I looked at the menu and noticed that the tacos were sold in pairs, two for $5. So, I ordered two carne asada tacos and two carnitas tacos. I added a piña Jarritos and the meal was $12.25. The unhappy looking lady working here brought out some chips and two sauce containers for me to get some salsa. The chips were stale. Look, I know they are free, but can you at least serve some fresh chips or serve none at all? The salsa was pathetic. The pico de gallo was sour and the salsa verde had no real flavor. You know it's bad when you start thinking Pace Picante or Chipotle makes better salsas. When the tacos came out, they looked promising. But I noticed that they were really oily. Too much lard in my opinion and the cut of the meat looked like lower grade beef and pork because both the carne asada and carnitas had way too much fat. And, there was hardly any onion or cilantro on my tacos. Also, the carnitas tacos were topped with avocado and canned carrots. Very strange. When I bit into them, I knew why. They were masking the overpowering porkiness of the carnitas. I made the mistake of blindly trusting the Yelp rating. I thought I wasn't hungry, but this all changed when my mom brought me to El Michoacano. This is one of those places you really can't judge from the outside. It's located in a small, run-down strip mall. It looks like it's in the process of being remodeled, so it really looks horrible from the outside right now, but I have hope that it'll be nice once it's all done. We went on a Saturday, about 1:00 p.m. and the place was pretty empty, except for the two ladies working there. My mom and I had: -Chips and salsa (free): These chips are pretty generic, but the salsas are really great. There was a green salsa, red salsa, and pico. The pico was nice and spicy and very fresh tasting. The green salsa was good too. The red salsa was my favorite. It had a very nice deep flavor to it, and as I was leaving, I saw someone order a tub-full of the red salsa. -Adobado (marinated pork) taco ($1.89): A small street taco filled with plenty of flavorful pork, lettuce, onion, and a bit of cilantro. The adobado was absolutely delicious. Since these tacos come with two tortillas per taco, my mom and I just each took one tortilla and split the meat up to make two smaller tacos. Delicious! -Adobado (marinated pork) burrito ($3.89): This burrito is my ideal burrito. It isn't filled with rice or beans or random fillers. It's filled with pork, lettuce, and onion. The tortilla is nice and thin, while still holding in all of the ingredients. Also, the tortilla is great because it has a nice crisp grill to it. These items were both made right when we ordered them and came out nice and hot. -Horchata (about $2): I don't really care for horchata, but my mom likes it and she said that it was pretty good, as usual. We also ordered an adobado torta (about $5.49) to-go. It was ready in about 5 minutes. The torta was made with a dense bread, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and pork. They also included a jalepeno pepper on the side. My sister had the torta and she said that it was pretty good, but that there was too much bread. Overall, the food tasted pretty good; some items are better than others. It is pretty out-of-the-way for me to visit this restaurant, but it's a good option for those in the area. Hopefully after the re-model, the place will be more presentable on the outside. I was driving with a friend down Franklin - looking for a good Mexican restaurant. The first place had nothing we wanted (4 inquiries, nothing available), the second place had a terrible parking problem, which is probably okay other than early Sunday afternoon. The last place was this place. I got a simple asada burrito plate and my friend got a simple adobada taco plate. Both where visually attractive with rice, beans, lettuce tomato and avocado slices. For simple plates, they where full of flavor. The rice and the beans (refried) where made from someone with obvious experience. The salsa bar had 6 choices. I got one green and one red and red - they both where HOT so if you like HOT salsa and accommodating and friendly service, this is the place to come. read more

Went yesterday for tacos while waiting for my dog at the vet next door - got the 2 taco combo plate carnitas & they were possibly the best take out tacos I have had in Sacramento. They have the restaurant set up for take out. Plastic / plexiglass around the kitchen area, floor & counters extremely clean, hand sanitizer available. Theres an overhang outside so people arent crowded in as well. The lady who runs it is exactly who you want to see in charge. You can tell she runs a tight ship & has high standards for her kitchen. I wanted more so today I get up ready to order delivery & I am so upset they dont offer it! The Jefe and Profesor de Adobado, Juan, is the real thing. A true master of the art. We have eaten here numerous times and have always been very pleased with the superb cuisine, the attentive service, and the true ambiance of this jewel on Fruitridge. Nopales tacos, Birria, Buche Botano, weekend handmade tortillas, Micheladas, and the deadly Camarones hasta la madre, are just a small sampling of Juan's fine craftmanship. The truly beautiful brickwork of the arched walls around the parking lot is alone worth a stop. How do they do that? I'm the worse person to bring to a mexican restaurant because I'm really picky and I like fried tacos. I'm embarrassed to even admit that on yelp. I went here with a couple of co-works and I'm glad I came. It was kind of intimidating because all my co-works spoke spanish and knew what to order right away. The cashier even spoke to me in spanish at first and thankfully I understood (thank you high school spanish class). The menu is self explanatory but I'm such a dumby with mexican food... My co-worker suggested the "taco de carnitas." It was do great!! The meat was so tender and it reminded me of filipino lechon (pork) in a way. It had the perfect texture and amount of fat on it. They also just serve mexican sodas (the ones that come in bottles), cool drinks like horchata and I believe it was jicama. Tastes like my grandma made it ;) the owner is adorable and really takes pride in his food and his success story of a business. The grandaddy of authentic Mexican tacquerias in Sacramento! I used to go to the original El Michoacano when it was a trailer located in front of the Reno Club on 12th Street across from 524. The trailer is immortalized in a cheesy painting at El Michoacano #1. The original tacos are great, but the thing to get here is the Huarache, which resembles the footwear that it is named for. It's kind of a cross between a taco and a gordito and starts with fresh masa that is flattened to an oblong shape to about triple the thickness of a tortilla and griddled. They are then topped with your choice of meat (Carnitas always seems to be my choice). One is a meal, two is dangerous. El Michoacano has seen a lot of competition come and go on Franklin (and elsewhere), but it still has the best tacos in my book. If I lived closer to it, I'd weigh 300 pounds. read more

I've been to the location on Fruitridge but that location has now been bought out by another person, same owner of the location, just different resaurant. its now called LA MICHOACANA. interesting. this was my first time at this location, and i love the owners. theyre so nice, well maybe because my bf's family really knows them, but he was super inviting of me and made me feel at home and catered to my every need. both times i have at at el michoacano i have gotten an adobada torta. to die for! so good. the adobada is so good and not greasy at all like i mentioned before. i love it here. i want more :p read more

This place is a hidden gem! I used to eat here regularly when I lived in Sac years ago and decided to check it out during a recent holiday visit. The burritos are a little smaller than they used to be, but this place is still a great place to grab some semi-authentic Mexican food. The basics: The place is clean, the food is served hot, and they have good service. (These are the essentials, but I'm surprised at how many places are just filthy or serve luke-warm food. Why even bother??) This place is spotless! The rest: They have tacos, burritos, tortas, tostadas, and quesadillas, and a huge selection meat choices from beef, chicken, and virtually every part of the pig - carnitas, al pastor, lengua, buche, etc. The meat is delicious and the items are prepared right in front of you with basic toppings that don't mask the taste of the meat. For instance the burrito comes with onion and cilantro, with a lime and hot sauce on the side. That's it. They mad-dogged me during my first visit over 20 years ago when I asked for cheese on my burrito. After trying it their way I quickly learned why. I come from a German / Mexican heritage and grew up with my grandma cooking truly traditional Mexican food like adobo, mole, cabeza, lengua, chicharrones, carnitas, and homemade tortillas. This place comes as close to my grandma's cooking as it can get! If you're a fan of the more traditional Mexican foods, they offer a wide variety of these, not just the Americanized faire of muscle meats of chicken, beef, and pork. Those are good too, but I prefer to stick to the previous foods mentioned. They also have an excellent salsa selection and the owner is jovial and friendly. I particularly love that they offer burritos in the traditional way of just lettuce, cilantro, your choice of meat, and lime. Those simple flavors make for an excellent eating experience. Got an asada super burrito and Jamaica for $9.50. The burrito wasn't constructed very well and required a fork and knife. I could have done without the shredded lettuce, I can't understand why anyone would put lettuce of any shape in a burrito. There could have been a little more cheese. the avocado slices were good but there was no salsa. Not a very 'super' burrito. Regardless, the asada was pretty good and is what really counts anyway. The Jamaica was some of the best I've had, and was not overly sweet like most taquerias. When I confronted the woman about my order, she was adamant that she charged me for 1 taco and horchata. My mistake for not getting a receipt and trusting this establishment.
