This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Calhoun area. This place is spacious, has great outdoor seating, the bar is well stocked, and you can see a TV from just about anywhere (if that's the kinda thing you're into). The Tacos de Carne Asada are delicious, and they Tacos al Pastor are a 'must try'! They're piled high with meat, cilantro and diced onions. The homemade tomatillo sauce is tasty, and packs a good amount of heat. A great place for lunch! read more

Honestly, this whole experience was just awful. We drove an hour to eat here and we'll probably never be back. Let's start with walking through the door. We walk in, there's a small waiting area with one couple ahead of us. We stand to the side and wait and another group of men comes in and passes right by us to the host stand. The host saw us there, knew we were there, and still sat them ahead of us. Okay, frustrating, but whatever. Then we get seated. It's just my husband, I, and our two toddlers. They're old enough to both eat their own meals by themselves, mind you. We go to order drinks and she only takes mine and my husband's, ignores the kids, and starts to walk off. I said, "excuse me, they'd both like a lemonade please". She acted like this was an inconvenience but said okay and brought back a single lemonade apparently for both boys to share. Mind you, when we get the bill, we're charged for three adult drinks and one child's when my husband and I got one soda each and the kids only got one lemonade. So an extra $3 for something we never received. Then we order a cheese dip with jalapeños on the side. She brings it back, it has jalapeno blended in. I nicely said, could we get one for the kids without jalapeños? She says "okay so you didn't want this and you just wanted plain cheese dip?" And I said yes... but jalapeños on the side. Easy mistake to make, but you could not be rude about it. It comes back cold, no big deal. Then it comes time to take our order. I order and my husband orders and she shuts the book and starts to walk away. Once again... "the boys would like to order also... they'd like cheese quesadillas with fries". Again, she acts annoyed she even has to deal with the kids order. We get our food, 12 minutes exactly passed before our kids got their one plate. Our food was already cold so I just asked if we could have one extra plate for them to share it since it took so long already. She comes back and says "so now you want extra fries or something?" I said no we just need a plate... again, she acted irritated and I said they literally just need to have something to eat off of. Thank you. Lastly, we ordered the "fried brownie bites" as listed on the menu. We're then told they don't have fried brownie bites and she acted like we were in the wrong for asking for exactly what the menu said. We got four tiny brownies that were frozen in ice cream. The only positives we have about this meal was the flavor of the fajita quesadillas were phenomenal and I bet they would have been great when they were warm and even though the brownie desert isn't even close to what's advertised, it was good! I can't in good conscience recommend or patronize a business that treats children like they don't deserve to be a part of a meal when they're really good kids. Came here for a date night with my husband. He ordered the California burrito with chicken. It normally comes with cheese dip on top but he asked for no cheese dip. He said it was really good. I ordered the El nopal special that typically come with rice, chicken, shrimp and queso, but i replaced the shrimp for steak. They have the option of half order or full, pictured is the half order. It is very filling and i only ate half of the half order with some chips. Overall super yummy and if you don't feel like cooking dinner today stop by and have some good Mexican food read more

My family stopped in here while visiting our granddaughter. They were extremely busy so we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated our waitress came to take our order pretty quickly. She was very nice and even helped with some suggestions. The salsa was delicious. I got the pork carnitas. They were on the dry side and in really big chunks. Overall the food wasn't spectacular but it was good. The bathrooms were clean as was the entire restaurant. I will not be eating at El Napol in Calhoun, ga again. We took our family and service animal with us to eat like we have in the past. Manager/server named Eric would not serve us and ask us to leave. We tried to explain to him about our service dog, and we showed him the tag and number for our dog. She is a small dog and does not cause any problems whatsoever. Not sure why I have never reviewed this place but it's to me the best place in Calhoun for Mexican food. I like the others but the food, service, and yes drinks are so much better here. I like the combo platters, fajitas, and even the other selections pollo loco and street tacos are good. Where to even begin??? This was pretty underwhelming. Truthfully, I feel like it was a waste of $ and I'd be tempted to one-star this place based on the service and the meal that I ordered alone, but my husband had a fairly decent taco salad (it's taco salad, how hard is it to mess that up, anyway???) and the chips and salsa were okay, so there's that. First, the pros: we were seated immediately and our server dropped off warm chips and some rather zesty salsa before we even ordered. The chips were warm and tasted fine, but they weren't out of this world great, either. The salsa was tasty enough, but I doubt it was made in/house. At least the complimentary chips and salsa came with free refills and they didn't charge for extras. Overall, the food was cheap, but you know the adage, you get what you pay for- well, that was apparent here. Truthfully, we'd have been better off at Taco Bell or Del Taco (more on that later in another review). I'm a vegetarian and usually have no problem finding decent vegetarian-denoted items in any Mexican eatery menu. Well, not here. The menu was huge and there was no designated vegetarian section, no items with an icon denoting vegetarian dish elsewhere, nothing. I looked over the menu numerous times and really couldn't find a single dish not swathed in meat or that actually could be considered vegetarian in any way. I finally found a regular bean burrito and ordered a cheese quesadilla on the side. I was completely disappointed in the menu, but I was hungry and figured how can you mess up a cheese quesadilla and bean burritos? Well, they could mess it up and definitely did just that. My husband ordered a taco salad, while I made it crystal clear to the server that I was a vegetarian and wanted NO MEAT on my dish. He either didn't understand or the chefs didn't give a rip because what came out if the kitchen was an abomination topped off by disgusting-looking meat, the type of which I'm still not sure. My husband's salad was fine, but mine was both gross-looking and definitely not what I had ordered. My dish also didn't even come with rice or anything. Seriously??? I conveyed my displeasure with the order to the waiter, who muttered that everyone eats beef or something like that (sorry, dude, not everyone eats meat and was that actually beef, I couldn't tell because it looked nasty). He took back the burritos and almost immediately he had returned with two bean burritos swimming g in great, cheap cheese and what appeared as tiny remnants of the beef on top in one corner. Yeah, they didn't remake it at all, they scraped the meat off (which appeared unappetizing and definitely not fresh) off the burritos and added more cheese. Nice try. My cheese quesadilla was so pitiful, it looked like some crap my eight year-old niece could make in the microwave in 2 minutes. It was obviously nuked beyond being edible, was cold, dry and blah. I couldn't eat it. Good thing I filled up on chips and salsa and a Modelo beer. After that, our server never came back to the table or anything. He coyly dropped the check while singing happy birthday to the booth behind us. Cute. We were never offered water to begin with, he never inquired if we wanted a second beer, boxes or anything. Another waiter dropped by the table to grab the bill and our credit card and dropped it back off without a word. No manager ever popped over to our table, nobody picked up the dishes, I left 98% of my food uneaten and it wasn't removed from the check. Whatever. Oh, my husband and I noticed that this is the only Mexican restaurant we've ever been in that didn't have any hot sauce on the tables, too. I ate dinner at El Nopal when I was in town and I was not impressed. I ordered a combo plate with a burrito, enchilada and chile relleno. Well, some chile relleno that was. It had literally one bite of a pepper slice in it. Overall taste of the chips, salsa, and burrito/enchilada was average. I will not return. read more

The service and food is amazing here! We are always seated fast and waited on in a timely manner. The waiters and waitresses we get are always kind. My wife usually gets the chimichanga or beefy nachos and I always get the chicken soup. The prices are great too! We usually eat here 3-4 times a month and I can't seem to get anything other than their soup! It's just so delicious! I have tried their other dishes though, which were just as good. read more

For the first time I went to El Nopal with my coworkers. Ordered 3 vegetable fajitas and 1 chicken fajita. Food had no whatsoever taste or flavor to it. The food didn't come out sizzling, sizzler plates were warm. Seemed like vegetables were just microwaved and put on the dish. Talked to the manager and the manager explanation was " chef is new, been only working 3 weeks". Manager offered to replace it with something else, we denied. If a person can't cook fajitas right what will they be able to cook of the menu. We asked the server for the check and it was 49 and some change. Paid the check and walked out. Would be my last time eating at this place. Nobody seemed to care about the quality of the food being presented to the clientele. Hopefully they can step up their game. El Nopal is one of Calhoun's newest restaurants. The salsa is good and I'm especially fond of the Nopal Dip as an appetizer. The menu has a very large selection (maybe a little overwhelming) with lots of variety to chose from. The quality of the food is very good and the staff is very friendly. My personal favorite is the El Nopal Special. Service levels by the staff can suffer when they're busy and table conversations with my friends can become difficult, especially when the Mariachi band is playing on Wednesday nights after 7pm. The negatives aside, I continue to frequent this establishment regularly for I'm a huge fan of Mexican food. If in the area, it's definitely worth a try! read more

I am so glad El Nopal opened a restaurant in Calhoun. We used to frequent the one in Adairsville on Thursday nights for the Mariachi band. Calhoun now has Mariachi night on Wednesdays. The band members seem to vary from week to week but they are always ready to take requests. (I request no more Rocky Top requests-- come on, people, be creative.) The food is good, especially when you order it with the white melted cheese poured over the top. My favorite is Chicken Quesadillas. Of course the regular beef tacos out-do fast food ones anytime. Just the chips & salsa with that white cheese dip can be a meal. The service is fast & friendly. The atmosphere is casual & great for groups. read more

Even though I live in Calhoun, I've always gone to the El Nopal in Adairsville. My favorite dish is the quesadilla rellena. I NEVER deviate from this entree, which can be stuffed with either beef or chicken. I get the chicken, which is shredded and tender. Refried beans, cheese, and a few scattered peppers are also in the quesadilla. Lettuce, tomato, guacamole, and sour cream come on the side. For some inexplicable reason, I still prefer the Adairsville location. The most remarkable thing for me about the restaurant in Calhoun: I was sitting there having lunch with my father when I heard someone on the TV announce that Michael Jackson was dead. read more

Water refill was timely, my order was taken in a timely manner, I was given enough time to eat, and my waiter came at the right time to ask if I needed anything else before handing us our bill. I love this restaurant. The service is always great. My favorite dish is the chile relleno. It always comes out piping hot and full of tasty cheese. The margaritas are always a real treat too. We live in Chattanooga, TN. Every time we go to Atlanta, I make my husband stop in for the relleno and a margarita. If the Atlanta trip was an over night trip, we stop on the way back home too. First time here and probably will not return. My husband and I visited on Saturday night, looking for a local restaurant that wasn't a chain. We thought, based on the exterior, that this restaurant might fit our need to find something with a little atmosphere. As we are walking up to the restaurant, two employees walk in the door at the same time as us They didn't speak or look at us, much less hold the door open for us. (And no, we weren't at the car or in the lot... we were immediately behind them.) The hostess greeted us immediately but was less than happy to see us arrive. After waiting for a bit for our waiter to appear, we were pleased that he was nice and seemed like he wanted to be there. The food was ok. Nothing horrible but I wouldn't eat it again either. My biggest complaint is the staff. They ALL had earpieces in like they were on their cell phones. There were a ton of employees there doing absolutely nothing but talking to each other and carrying on while hanging out at the cash register. Even the manager decided to make a big scene of joking around with some of the employees. Needless to say, we were less than excited about our experience and will probably not visit again. read more

I've been eating at El Nopal for many years. I've at at three different locations- but this review is for the Calhoun location. This is your typical Tex-mex dive restaurant; don't expect too much more than that and you'll be fine. I highly recommend you stick to the simple items on the menu also, to further your satisfaction. Last night we ordered take out and I sat at the bar waiting on the order to be complete. There was no one sitting at the bar, they just use it for a place for people to sit for pick up orders. I looked around the bar top and it was littered with a couple of spent glasses and a few dirty dishes, a half empty basket of nachos ... etc. maybe a little attention to detail there on the cleaning would be good. After getting home I opened my large order of Texas fajita nachos. It looked good except it was missing the KEY INGREDIENT which was the white cheese! So my shrimp, chicken, and beef was just dumped into dry nachos haha! No cheese at all, not a drip. I don't even wanna mention what this entree cost, let me just say it should've had the cheese on it, a lot of cheese. Of course I'll return again- but lesson learn- I'll check my order next time.
