Hands down, the best fish and chips I've ever had. I'm not even a big fish-and-chips person--I'm not sure why I ordered it--but I'm glad I did. It completely exceeded my expectations, and I've honestly been thinking about going back just to have it again. The fish was incredibly fresh--tender, flaky, and practically melted in my mouth. The breading was on another level: perfectly crisp, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. It paired really well with the beer-battered fries, which were also excellent. The portion size was massive. We were visiting Ellijay for the weekend and The Butcher and Bottle looked like the perfect dinner spot - great space on River Street, cool atmosphere, the kind of place you want to be the hidden gem of a mountain town getaway. Sadly, the kitchen didn't deliver. Five of us ordered across the menu - B&B Meatballs, Lobster Hush Puppies, Orchard Salad with chicken, Caesar Salad, a dozen Little Wick oysters, the 14oz NY Strip, and Seafood Pasta. For a place billing itself as Steak, Seafood and Spirits, the execution was rough. The NY Strip came out overcooked, so I sent it back. The replacement was better but still not right. When I mentioned it to our server, he pulled out a flashlight to inspect the cook at the table, which was awkward enough that I just accepted it and moved on rather than make more of a scene. The Lobster Hush Puppies sounded great on paper but were a letdown in practice. Nothing across the table was bad enough to cause a fuss, but nothing wowed anyone either. To their credit, the staff proactively offered a discount on the steak without us having to ask - that's a classy move and shows some self-awareness. The room is genuinely nice and the vibe is right. But at almost $200 before the discount for a Friday night in Ellijay, the food needs to match the ambition of the concept. A $42 steak that comes out overcooked twice shouldn't require a flashlight inspection - it should just be cooked right. We ordered a Mushroom Swiss burger for me with truffle fries, and Dawn settled on the fish and chips. We were served promptly, and the food didn't disappoint. Rhiannon made sure we were happy with our meal and despite how busy the place was she made several trips to our table (outstanding service). Our bachelorette group came here last minute on a saturday night and they were super accommodating for such a big group! We had one of the coolest waitresses ever- Katie. She was so patient and kind and down to earth and made the experience 2x better. I have to say, this place had one of the BEST espresso martinis I've had to date, and most of my group who got one as well were in agreeance. It was more of a creamy martini and it was fabulous. All of us also really liked the food. I got the salmon and it had several different versions of fried and grilled and mashed carrots, which seemed overboard reading the description but tasting it you couldn't even tell there were carrots in the dish. It was like sorcery and was absolutely delicious. My friend (the bride) got one of the espresso martinis, not realizing it had a lot of dairy which she is very dairy allergic- so Katie brought her a different drink with no qualms. Perfect laid back steak dinner! This spot is rustic and quiet, with plenty of seating to spread out inside. Our server was great, constantly making sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. We got into the restaurant and it was pretty empty except for the bar so we were hoping that the reviews were valid. We were greeted by our waitress who took our drink order. We ordered a few beers and some wine and espresso martinis. She brought out the wrong martini for my sister in law and didn't really know a lot about the wine selection when my mother in law asked so I could tell they were frustrated. She quickly fixed it so all was well. We placed an order for the kids consisting of a few orders of Mac and cheese. & an order for bread. We didn't really realize that you were charged per order of bread, so we were kind of caught offguard by that. My brother in law ordered the oysters rockefeller, which ended up tasting pretty good & I was the lucky straw to get a second! My husband and I ended up splitting the 14 oz ribeye with brussel sprouts and a salad. The steak was really good. I had a few fatty pieces. The brussel sprouts were okay, but I'm super picky. You have to pay for bread service but it was fresh and the Olive oil dipping was nicely seasoned and cheesy. The price was definitely worth it and reasonable for the food quality. The outdoor area is nice if you have dogs but would recommend going inside otherwise. They did have fans to eliminate flies but eating outside is always an experience in Georgia summer, no fault of the restaurant and it's great they offer a spot too. Everyone who worked there was so friendly, kind, and genuinely happy to be there, which made the whole experience even better. Some of my family went for dinner the night before and could not stop talking about how incredible it was. But overall the service was SO SLOW and they were not apologetic about it at all. Most places would check in, provide some bread, or just ask if there's anything they can do about the long wait. Kind of felt like we were ignored at one point and when we asked about the food they said "oh it will be here in 10 minutes " but then it was much longer before we got our food. In summary, we were left with a measure of disappointment. We went on a relatively slow Tuesday night, with reservations, and seated right by the front door. The host, waitress and manager were all very friendly and attentive. The service was fine, however, when we were assured the Oysters Rockefeller did not contain any bacon/pork, we assumed that inquiry would inform the other menu items. We assumed incorrectly, as we ordered the "Seared snapper with roasted corn medley, asparagus and garlic herb butter" the waitress would alert us if any bacon or pork was included. Once the dish arrived, we instantly spotted the bacon all through the corn. The waitress was quick to replace the dish without bacon, so I tip my hat to their service. The flavor/taste of the snapper was mediocre. I ordered the classic Wine Braised Short ribs over mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. It's one of my favorite dishes that I often order when dining a restaurants known for their steaks. Unfortunately, The Butcher and Bottle's version of this dish was also underwhelming. Typically the braised short ribs are fork tender and oozing with deep beef flavor. My dish there was neither, and gave the impression it was made else where and reheated I don't want to go so far as to say it was pre-packaged, as I know the time it takes to properly braise the beef. Nevertheless, we left the majority of the meat on the plate as it was bland and chewy. It may have been an off night, no doubt, and judging by the vibe and atmosphere and service why they receive so many positive reviews. If we return, we will order something different. read more
