Me and a buddy were looking for a good Mexican spot after finishing a TV mounting job nearby, and we stumbled across El Norteño Taqueria. He had just said, "I wish we could find a hole in the wall," and sure enough, this was it. From the outside it looks small and tucked away, but once inside it's actually quite spacious. We were greeted promptly by our server, who was very kind and welcoming. Drinks: I ordered the horchata -- rich, creamy, and refreshing. My buddy got his go-to lemonade, which came out in a huge 32oz glass and was just as satisfying. Food: * My friend went with the quesadilla with asada plate -- big portion, perfectly crispy quesadilla, served with rice, beans, and salad. The homemade tortillas were a standout. * I had the Tejas Plate (combination plate) -- two cheese enchiladas, carne guisada, rice, beans, salad, and fresh flour tortillas. Everything was seasoned well, balanced in flavor, and had that traditional home-cooked touch. Their red and green salsa added the perfect kick without overpowering the dishes. The value was excellent -- $17.93 each for two generous plates plus large drinks. That's rare to find these days, especially with food this fresh and authentic. Overall, El Norteño Taqueria truly delivers what you hope for in a hole-in-the-wall spot: warm service, homemade food, and prices that make you want to come back. This is one of the very few places the husband will have menudo in the San Antonio area. He's super picky so it must be good. I've enjoyed their breakfast tacos. The fillings are always tasty but I'm not crazy about the thick flour tortillas. We stop by here often for breakfast and they're always busy. read more

I love to try taquerias. This was my first time at El Norteno for a late breakfast. The exterior and interior of this old house screams "authentic" and based on Yelp reviews, I felt it was safe to try out. The staff was friendly (although we needed some translation help at ordering time). I tried their machacado burrito (eggs, Mexican steak, onions, peppers, tomatoes, etc). It was very large and served piping hot along with two squeeze bottles of serious hot sauces. Without the salsas, it was very good. With the salsas it was really really good. Very filling also. Overall a really good breakfast for me. I'll go try something else from the menu next time I'm in NB. read more

Prefer the drive through more than this sit down version. Ordered a barbacoa gordita - gordita was fried but not crispy (boo) but too 'doughy' - like you'd expect from a store-bought gordita. This is one of the "Hole in wall" "Best Kept Secret" , "Locals know Best" kind of place!! We had some friends that live in New Braunfels take us here and it's delicious. Think authentic homemade Mexican food at a great price! Place is always packed, small inside and limited parking, but so worth it. The tacos are delicious, the gorditas, the El Pastor, the menudo and more! We have never had anything that was bad. Not fancy just good. You can order to go if you can't get a table. We were both super hungry so there was no time to appreciate the plate loll We've been wanting to try this place for over a year now and we always just missed it as they are just breakfast and lunch place. I ordered the Al Pastor nachos, it's always my favorite meal to try first at a new to me Mexican restaurant. I figure if a places messes up nachos the other food can't be that good lol Well let me say this was by far the best nachos I've ever had!! The pastor was a game changer!! I've never had pineapple on my nachos and I swear it was the absolute best! Plus the chips were fresh made!! They were sturdy too! Not a single chip got soggy!! It was phenomenal! My partner had pastor tacos and raved how great they were as well! The real challenge will be not going there everyday to eat. I visit this place every time I'm in the area .. it always packed and you will always have to wait for a seat but is most definitely worth the wait . Just realized that I haven't reviewed this place even though I order to go every single Sunday! This place is definitely a hole in the wall. If you blink you'll miss it. As you walk in you know the food is going to be authentic. You are greeted with a genuine smile and a "buenos días" (good morning). The to go section has little bar stools right next to the register. They have to go menus, specials, and even posters of the favorites up on the wall. I have to be honest, I've only ordered here to go. Plenty of times but always to go. It's about a 10 minute drive from my girlfriends apartment and food has always been warm when I get there. I highly recommend this place! read more

I had the chicken quesadilla and it was ok, nothing to brag about. The beans and rice were bland, no real taste (1star). My bf had huevos rancheros, he didn't like his beans (too bland), his potatoes were too aldente and no seasoning. This is my second visit to El Norteno...it's situated nicely on the west side where some of the best Mexican food in New Braunfels comes from. El Norteno gets 4 stars for their made from scratch tortillas! I mean they are SO good...check out my pictures...look at those tortilla edges! My one attempt at making tortillas years ago looked like states too but never tasted that good. My sister had the carne guisada and found some tough pieces (she still gobbled it up) and my picadillo was just salted hamburger meat (I still liked it though lol). Once I tried my Dad's cheese enchiladas and sister's mini tacos and everything was very good. This is a hole in the wall in every sense of the description but it provides a pleasant secluded dining experience (for us hermits). Ok, I've begun a new journey. I'm searching for the best taqueria in New Braunfels. Three stars is because this is a baseline - not because it is a bad spot. I'd definitely go back, but it wasn't as "wow" as I was expecting. I plan to rate these all to a common "standard", so here goes. Outside: Looked good, cheap, appropriate garish advertisement, local, and not a chain. The parking was, as expected, tight and small. Inside: Very clean and more roomy than I expected. The waitress was super nice and fluent for my gringo ears. Filled up rapidly after we arrived but wasn't packed. No one was waiting for seats. Chips/Salsa: The chips were super salty grocery style product. No wow factor at all. 2-stars. The salsa seemed to be their own tomatillo based salsa that had an echo of heat to it. I was expecting something red but this was a refreshing change. 4-stars. Rice/Beans: I should have gone real cheap and stuck with just a taco dish. These were really bad and uninspiring. They definitely save money from the wholesale distributor on these. Both would have been 1-stars. Chicken fajita taco: Handmade corn tortillas were a great treat. Came with a light dusting of cheese, lettuce and some tomato chunks. The chicken seasoning was great. This was easily a 4-star if not a 5. Asada taco: Handmade corn tortillas were again great. Same fixings as the chicken. The meat had a good seasoning but was a bit more stringy than I was hoping for. Maybe it was the asada. I'd give it a 3-star because of the tortillas pulled up the gristly meat. Overall, I'd go back. Some hits. Some misses. Definitely the standard bearer as I try others. read more

The tortillas were homemade and when I added tons of their delicious tomatillo sauce they held up and didn't get soggy. The picadillo and bean and cheese tacos were yummy and their coffee was cheap and tasty and my cup was refilled quickly.
