Herbert's in New Braunfels was such a fun and lively experience. We stopped by after a walk through Landa Park and along the Comal. My poor dog actually slipped on some algae and went right into the river that day, so it was especially nice to sit outside, relax, and enjoy the unbeatable weather afterward. We went on a Saturday and the place was absolutely popping. The patio was full of families enjoying the sunshine, and the whole place had a really energetic, welcoming vibe. I brought my dog along with her travel bed, and it was nice to be able to settle in outside with her. The folks at the next table were also very sweet and asked about my dog, which added to the friendly atmosphere. Our server was very kind and attentive throughout the visit. She made sure we were doing well and checked in at just the right times. One thing I really appreciated was that she brought chips for both sides of our table. The chips were super crispy and tasted really fresh -- a great way to start the meal. I'm not usually the biggest Tex-Mex fan, but I have to say I really enjoyed my giant plate of two beef burritos. The portions were massive and the flavors were great. I ended up with so many leftovers that I ate them again for lunch on Monday and Tuesday, and they were still incredibly tasty days later. The only slightly stressful moment was that some kids were running around the patio a bit unsupervised. It made me a little nervous with my dog there because I was worried someone might accidentally step on her. She's not easily spooked, but I felt better once we moved her to the unoccupied side of the table. That said, this wasn't the restaurant's fault -- just something to be mindful of since servers are also navigating the patio with big trays of hot food. Overall, we had a great time. Friendly service, great food, and a lively patio atmosphere made for a really enjoyable visit. I'd happily come back the next time I'm in New Braunfels. read more

Delightful Mexican restaurant with both indoor and patio seating. Greeted immediately and seated quickly although restaurant was pretty full. Richi took care of our drinks immediately and took our orders as soon as the complimentary chips and salsa were delivered. Salsa was tasty with a bit of zest but not overly spicy, even for my husband. We got a small guacamole and it was perfect for 2 chip loving peeps. I got the chicken fajita taco salad - plenty of white meat chicken and all the expected goodies, even a side of great tasting borracha beans. Hubby got the Beef fajita fiesta bowl - so big and tasty he could only eat half! Plenty of parking. We'll be back!! Herbert's is a classic Mexican restaurant that features good southern TexMex. It is fantastic, fresh food, fresh ingredients. The taste is spot on for where we grew up in south Texas. It is perfect. Enchiladas are filled well and plates have awesome sized portions. Unlike more fancy Mexican restaurants that give you very little for a high price this place is the place to come. From the clientele , it sure looks like a local favorite. You get what you feel is a fair price for your food and you get high quality food. Wake up huge outside setting area underneath trees really beautiful inside is gorgeously decorated; lots of colors and pop. Everything's taken care of immaculately. Plus the staff is so sweet. Food was alright but waitress was horrendous. We showed up with a bigger party and immediately felt like we were an inconvenience to the waitress. Very rude the whole time, like warm beer, asked to order apps and got told not yet and didn't get to order them until we ordered our food. Waitress spilt hot queso on one of our kids as well. After asking for a manger didn't get one until an hr later and waitress lied about what happen straight to the mangers face. Food was good but won't come back due to service. We walked in on a Monday at 12:30 ish and the place wasn't to busy. We were seated right away and able to order shortly after. The weather was so cold out so thank god I got some food in me. The restaurant smelled great when we walked in so that's always a good sign. The inside of the restaurant was very colorful and they even seemed to have a small gift and goodies shop. To start - I called on our way over there and asked about a waitlist or reservation and they said no, but then we got there and tables said "reserved" so my mom asked and they said they do take reservations... manager came to talk to her and she said "those were made last week". So they dont take reservations the day of or what? The playground is quite rambunctious! Made my mom super nervous for my 3yo niece. Too many older kids (like10+) and some of them kept opening the gate to go out to chase a ball they threw over. Definitely a lot of stimuli so I didn't even get to enjoy the ambiance and outside because they were so nervous and freakin out the whole time. The food was ok. Fajita Taco was good and quesadillas are awesome. However, Chili gravy needs more chili pepper and flavor. Queso was ehhhh. Guac was decent. My skinny marg was carbonated a bit limey but they do make their own mix. Wasn't impressed with the house marg either. The kids quesadilla was amazing tho! Rice is dry and bland, the salsa was spicy though which was nice! So meal was not what I was expecting for the parking that's usually packed. Be aware, if you upgrade the tequila in your margarita, they automatically upgrade the triple sec, which is fantastic, however you can choose Grand Marnier or Contro and our waiter did not alert us to this. They chose for us, which was Grand Marnier, I can't stand Grand Marnier, I would've preferred the cheaper triple sec, especially since the up charge is an additional eight dollars per Margarita, basically 24 bucks a margarita. They would not switch the drinks out for us, so we did not order dinner and left. Needless to say, we will not be returning. I grew up in San Marcos so Herbert's is a staple for most of us locals. My husband and I came here for lunch during the week. We were seated right away by a wonderful hostess. I love the decor. The location is San Marcos doesn't have quite as much room to play with so it was really nice to see all the hand carved chairs and tables and colorful decor around the place. We have driven by on a few occasions and this place seems to by busy all the time. We got lucky for our weekday lunch. The lunch specials are amazing. $8.99 for 2 beef enchiladas, rice and beans and a drink! AND a drink!!!! If you are Texan then that tea is a must! $8.99 is such a great deal! You start off with chips and salsa and get the small queso! Best cost of any Mexican or Tex-mex I've been to. I couldn't really tell you much about the menu because like I said I've been coming here (San Marcos) since I had teeth. The food tastes exactly the same as the original. Sometimes the second locations don't get it all right but New Braunfels has it right and then some. I was really impressed. Thank you for giving me that nostalgic home meal kind of feel. It's a fun place to visit, very touristy with lots of decor and decent food. I had the Cheese Enchiladas and found them tasty and filling. I also had a margarita and it was satisfying. Tonight we had SUCH an amazing experience here. Kayla was our server and she was soooo sweet. This is genuinely the best service I've had here. We always have good service don't get me wrong but she is for sure the best. Not to mention too that the high chairs here are better than anywhere I have been around here lol. My son is 7 months old and the high chairs have a table for him to eat on. Had SUCH an amazing time tonight all thanks to our amazing waitress Kayla and the good vibes. We had an issue with our check.And the manager did not care.They lost customers over a sweet tea. Instead, our mill came with it.And after they served us and let us finish our meals.Then, they told us we had to pay for the drinks. This place has delicious food and drinks. My husband ordered the house margarita and fajitas. The beef was really well seasoned. The chicken had a little too much salt. I ordered the house mango margarita and seafood enchiladas. It was delicious. We ate out on the patio and it was beautiful. They've done a great job giving the impression that it's a private oasis even though it is located right off highway 46. Herbert's also has a playground for children to play. Three stars because they didn't tell me there was a large up charge for lettuce, cheese and sour cream so my bill was a really big surprise. The beer is cold, but it's hit or miss if the chips are stale or not. My 'biggest' complaint' is the NASTY ceiling fans with stuff flying off them into the food, I watched it happen. The top of our chips bowl was big whole chips just below the top layer was a bowl full of crumbs. The salsa was excellent. The frozen margarita was completely liquid, but they served it that way. When I questioned it, the lady said the machine is broken and I said then why did you serve this to me? They took it back and poured it over ice. I noticed they continue to serve that completely liquid frozen margarita. My enchiladas were lukewarm. My guests fajitas were sizzling hot. To start off, the food was AMAZING (as always) and super fast service. The only thing messing up the rating is the waitress KAT. I've observed her on MULTIPLE occasions treating guests poorly. The first I saw was a couple weeks ago, where some lady's child accidentally spilt his lemonade. 15 minutes passed by and Kat didn't acknowledge that table nor the mess, the mother of the child had to walk up to Kat asking for a refill/ extra towels so she could clean it , where Kat proceeded to make a scene. Saying " I'm busy right now and do NOT have time for that, I'll get to you when I get to you" the mother was obviously upset by that statement so she went back to her table, Kat never went back to check on them/ refill the cup. The second instance was on Friday where kat(again) was being rude to customers. She was talking a couples order and completely messed it up, when the guests noticed they tried telling her "I think we have the wrong tables order" where Kat answered with " no. This is what y'all ordered so yall will eat it." Which in its self was not something you say to customers, but I overheard their order and they DID NOT order that at all! It wasn't even close! I will continue to use this restaurant as it is super amazing + it's close to home, but if I ever get this waitress I will be moving out of her section and request a new waitress. read more
