The restaurant has a small, cozy vibe that makes it nice for a casual lunch spot. The food is also great. I got the bistec en la crema, which was steak with cheese on top, accompanied by rice and beans. The rice and beans were very tasty, as was the steak. The food is excellent. The staff was warm and proficient. I was greeted in Spanish and replied in English to let her know that I'm not confident with my high school Spanish from 30 years ago. Legit these are bomb tacos. I ordered 2 steak tacos which turned out to be just the authentic taco I was looking for. The amount of meat they give with one taco is enough for 2 so I honestly feel like I got 4 tacos for the price of 2. These tacos are the real deal without any of the American spin on it. My favorite Mexican restaurant in New Brunswick. When I first started going here I would get burrito/torta/tacos and they are all very good. Then I started going with my Mexican friend who introduced me to the other options on the menu and I realized how good this place is. There's no parking and is located at a weird intersection so you might have to go around for a bit if you're driving here. The all the meat is flavorful and the tortillas taste great. The tacos come with cilantro, lime, jalapeños, and onions. The meal also came with chips and salsa, salsa verde and another sauce that I do not know the name of. These were about $3 per taco and is still completely worth it. I ordered an horchata too which wasn't the best I've had due to this one having a more watery taste but it still is good. read more

The cooks could have secured the tacos a better way, like individually wrapping them in tin foil or packing them in a takeout container instead. The fillings of the tacos were even coming out everywhere within the tin foil and you couldn't differentiate which meat was which. I've been here a few times now and can say with certainty that this is one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in the area. The place is rather small and has only 1 dining room that's shaped like a long rectangle, where the path from the door to the back is dotted with small tables, even though they will gladly try to rearrange the tables to accommodate larger parties (to whatever extent is physically possible). This place is usually crowded during dinner time, especially during lunch on weekends. The food is authentic, and having the kitchen right next to the tables just infuse your nostrils (and clothes, etc. :-) with the aroma of a familial Mexican restaurant. Sometimes there are peddlers who drop by and offer flowers, music, or DVDs -- which I absolutely don't mind at all and actually adds richness to the atmosphere. The food never disappoints, from the fantastic chile relleno to the crunchy flautas and even basic fares such as their tortas and tacos stand above the rest. Their mole is exquisitely made, and I love the onion bulbs that come with most of the dishes, which come in generous portions. The manager and servers are very friendly and quick with your requests. Parking could be a bit tricky since they have a small parking lot adjacent to the restaurant with cars parked at an angle, or you would have to make do with street parking. This is a rinky dink kinda restaurant but the ambience is authentic and the staff is hard-working. A lot of options for meat courses and your not so typical Mexican dishes. I enjoyed the complimentary salsas with chips. The guacamole is a good price and well done (you can always add extra salt and lime juice at the table). Salsa verde was delicious. I got a shrimp taco and it was simple but delicious. My boyfriend wanted queso but they don't have any so they brought a plate of pan seared cheese which was dope. My vegetarian burrito was beautiful! I wish the rice was more fresh and flavorful but presentation and size compensated. My boyfriend got bistec con queso y crema and it looked dank. Having grown up in the Salinas Valley of California, I felt transported back home, tonight. I grew up knowing, first hand, that homemade Mexican food was several steps above the best Taquerias in town. Truly, incomparable. We posted a picture of our meal that consisted of 6-8 different types of meats, rice, beans, three types of salsas, fresh made guacamole, 2 dozen fresh made tortillas, strips of Mexican style cheese and a large fresh grilled cactus leaf. By American standards, it is a "hole in the wall" so don't be detoured by the fact that it gives off an "old diner feel." Stay the course, you are there for the incredible Mexican food that you have been missing and can't find anywhere by at the home of family and friends. For those reading this who want to truly experience authentic, home cooked Mexican food at least once in your life, this is your place. At a quick glance, it looks like every other mom and pop Mexican restaurant. And that's actually not a bad thing. First thing that was a plus for me was the salsa selection. All 3 brought out were delicious. Bright, punchy, bold flavors, all different, and all so so so so good. The second plus for me was the portion size. The tacos are big and they don't skimp on ingredients. The third has to be the fact that they are open late. Definitely hit the spot, especially that late at night. 3.25 to be exact. El Oaxaqueno is really a true "hole in the wall" restaurant. This place is simple and to the point. You can see the main kitchen in the middle of the restaurant and watch the food be prepared since it is an open space. You can tell this place has a good following by the abundance of Spanish speaking clientele that frequent here. Many servers here know limited English but it's usually enough to get by as long as you know what you want. If you can get by with that aspect of service, then I feel you would have a good meal here. What I like here is that when you order, they give you complementary chips and three different types of salsa to nibble and munch on. The burritos here are a good size and a good price. I also have been able to try some of their tacos and the flautas here which are pretty good. I have had no complaints about the food, but at the same time, none of the food has actually blown me away here. However, the prices for the food are very fair and you get a good portion for what you pay. FYI: There is a minimum amount to spend before they will accept your credit card, so if you will just have a small meal, make sure you bring cash! read more

I have to say this a diamond in the rough kind of place. It doesn't get anymore authentic then this. I was a little worried when someone has commented that no one spoke English but our waitress spoke it just fine . They were pretty busy shortly after we arrived and food took a bit to come out but it was worth the wait. They have a few combinations of dishes and the serving sizes are pretty big and prices weren't bad at all. We ordered four dishes which were nachos, pork and beef tacos, Chile Relleno tacos which had rice and Chile's and egg inside and also the flautas . Everything's ate had its own unique flavor and if you need a flavor boost the salsas they serve you are yummy. I love finding places like this that are off the beaten path and serve up tasty dishes. Me and my sister wanted to try out some new spots to eat, so we decided on El Oaxaqueno. As other yelp reviews have mentioned this place can get pretty busy, and our lunch proved this point; this place was packed for lunch. First served are complimentary corn chips and three different dips: a cilantro dip, a salsa verde, and a pico de gallo. Chips were nice and fresh; crispy and not greasy and each of the dips were equally fresh. Of the four dips, I enjoyed the pico de gallo with a nice squeeze of the fresh lime. We had two appetizers; one chicken tamale and one Queso (cheese) Cemita. Chicken tamale was scrumptious; moist, sticky, and rich flavored cornmeal dough enveloping a nice chunk of dark chicken meat. Queso Cemita was good too. There was a slightly salty creamy Oaxacan cheese pairing well with the rest of the jam-packed fresh vegetables and mayonnaise. The bread was strong enough to handle all the fillings. For entrees: I ordered a Mole con Pollo (Mole Chicken), and it was excellent. The mole was addictive, boasting really complex and unique flavors I've rarely tasted. Mole had a deep slightly bitter (which was not unpleasant) taste that I couldn't pin down, and in hindsight I think it was probably Mexican chocolate. Both a chicken wing and thigh were provided; moist and well seasoned. The accompanying rice and beans were really good too; filling and flavorful. My sister ordered a special (whose name I forget), comprised of three proteins (beef, chicken, and shrimp), accompanied with rice and beans, avocado, and various vegetables. Each protein was cooked well; chicken was moist, the beef was lean but cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the shrimps were cooked just to the perfect temperature. As with my entree, she enjoyed the rice and beans; citing similar attributes I mentioned above. Came here in 2017 & came back instead of going to Tacoria. Its definitely more authentic tex mex food. They have a open kitchen & a kitchen in the back so you might come out the restuarant snelling like food (the only downside). They redid the store front & added seating on the side of the restaurant. There is air conditioning inside so its not hot. Prices are sooo affordable. I got the large horchata & 3 carne asade tacos. My friend got a large smoothie.
