I've been looking for an authentic Mexican food place and this place definitely hit the spot! When you walk in, your eyes will immediately go to the bright colors on the wall between the textiles and the art pieces. The menu is small but there's definitely something for everyone. We got the vegetarian torts with the potatoes and veggies - the bread was fresh and served as the perfect platform for all the toppings. We were also here on taco Tuesday so the tacos were only $2 each!! Also loved the ensalada de nopales - one of the most unique and tasty ways of eating cactus! This spot is well located around the New Brunswick Rutgers campus and next to other eating spots. I have been to this eatery many times during the past three years. Disclaimer- I am not Mexican or of Mexican heritage, Boricua here. The food is well seasoned especially on Saturdays, there busiest. I've eaten in and done take out, both well prepared. The flavors are fresh, delicious and a good portion. My favorites include the Azteca quesadillas and tacos. I do not care for their agua frescas, they do not taste homemade. The service is attentive and quick. It is a nice warm and inviting set up small but comfortable eating area. I do appreciate the bright colors and the mess dedicated to los muertos y ancestros. La Catrina is a just-bigger-than-a-hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant on Easton Ave that is worth the visit. The small space is filled with Mexican decorations that really bring you into the culture. Their nachos were delicious and towering. I actually brought half of them home for lunch the next day. I have been meaning to try La Catrina for a while, especially since it's only a couple minutes walk for me. When my friend and I went for dinner at approximately 6:30 pm, there were a good amount of tables open and the restaurant was cutely decorated. We were given complimentary chips with a variety of salsas and sauces to dip them in. My friend got tacos and I got the al pastor chimichanga. I admit that I wish the chimichanga looked nicer, but it was very flavorful and it was stuffed with a good amount of food. I would be willing to go back to try more things on the menu! read more

Such a great spot for quick authentic Mexican food. The restaurant has a cute mexican theme which ties the food and the vibe together. My favorite menu items are the pechuga tacos, pechuga quesadilla, chicken empanadas, baja tacos, and the rice and beans. The churros are amazing as well. Sadly, they're not always open. First time trying this place after I got a craving for Mexican food! And I LOVED IT. My boyfriend and I got the Tacos (3), Tostadas (3), and Quesadilla Azteca to share- I honestly thought this wouldn't be enough food and now I feel so silly! Each one had a generous amount of vegetables & meat, enough to be considered one meal each. The ingredients tasted fresh and light, yet very filling. The meats were delicious and they have so many meat options to choose from! My favorite item was the Tostadas- the crunch of the tortilla contrasted so well with the tasty veggies and chorizo. The best and most unexpected part was that they include 3 different sauces/salsas for you in the takeout order, which I found to be incredibly thoughtful. The salsas only enhanced the flavor of the dishes. We got takeout (only took about 15 min), but they seemed like they were open for outdoor and indoor dining. Staff was very friendly and wearing masks. I will definitely be trading in my Taco Bell runs to go here instead to support local businesses and eat a healthier, freshly-cooked meal. read more

Adorable little place in New Brunswick! They have a amazing selection of Mexican dishes - some classics and some different! Definitely exciting for a vegetarian to explore more options. The service was friendly and the ambiance was also festive and cozy. It's also BYOB! Parking outside can get difficult but it's further away from main Rutgers campus so it was doable. I tried the Torta w/ mixed veggies/black beans but didn't turn out as yummy as I had hoped -- too much mayo and not enough mexican flavor. My fiance really enjoyed his Enchilada and the array of the hot sauces/salsas that came with our meal. I will definitely come back to explore more of the menu. read more

Don't come here with a large group. Come here with someone you don't mind seeing you stuff your face full of tacos and guac. No, really, that's what you will do. They serve complementary chips with a variety of salsa. TRY EVERY ONE. They're all uniquely tasty. The guacamole is freshly made and seasoned nicely. If you want spicy, let them know and be clear. La Catrina is one of my favorite restaurants on Easton Ave. Every time I come here, I am never disappointed. I love the ambiance and cultural feeling this restaurant gives. Upon arrival, I was able to get a seat right away. Our waitress brought complimentary chips and salsa to the table. Really loved having these especially since I was so hungry. The salsas all tasted different; I really enjoyed the green one. The 3 tacos I ordered were soooo delicious. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos. They are an additional $2, but they're so worth it. I even added the salsas from the chips to the tacos. Luckily for my friend and I, the day we visited was the 2nd anniversary of the restaurant. We were offered either free hot chocolate or free churros. I opted for the churros. They were the perfect amount of sweet and crunchy. We ordered a multitude of menu items, including tostadas, tacos, chalupas, chimichanga, and tortilla soup. The tostada was my personal favorite, as the dry crunchy corn tortilla was balanced out by the chorizo and juicy fillings on top. We also enjoyed sampling the different tacos and chalupas we got, each with a different type of meat: carne asada, al pastor, carne enchilada, etc. All were so flavorful and delicious! Taco shells are crispy and cheese was just the right amount. Meat was good portion. The place is very small. Its my only complaint. The waitress is good but there's only one in the place so if it's busy it's hard for her to tend to every table but she tries her best. They should add ground beef as part of their meat options. One of my favorite restaurants in the area - it makes me miss being able to dine-in so much! I came here multiple times while I attended Rutgers and the food and service is always excellent. I love their house chips & salsas (My favorite is the brown one but they're all delicious). I ordered takeaway the other day and had a bit of a picnic at the Yard (with proper social distancing of course). We got a chicken burrito, chalupas w/ carnitas, and enchiladas with carne enchilada & mole sauce. Portion sizes were generous as ever do this was more than enough food for 3 people, especially with the rice & beans that came with the enchiladas. Enchiladas taste good, despite I expect having suffered the most in transit. The mole sauce was a little bitter but also savory and spicy - I liked it but I do still want to try the other sauce option in future. Burrito was somewhat enormous for a single person - it's not something meant to be shared so I didn't get a taste but I believe there were leftovers. Chalupas were the first thing I ever ordered here and in my opinion, one of the best deals at La Catrina (3 for $8!). While not as good as fresh in the restaurant, it was still pretty fantastic. You still taste all the ingredients: the corn tortilla, the carnitas, the queso fresco - with a little salsa, it's a perfect bite. read more

I ordered takeout from La Catrina and can say that it's a hit or miss, but when it's a hit it really do be hittin. The birria here is a hard pass for me. It lacked flavor and was really just strangely salty. The taco shells were kind of like stale and hard to bite into. The pollo tinga "chalupa" was SO good. It was so flavorful and well seasoned and I really enjoyed it. However, it was very wet and kind of messy, which I assume is due to the fact that I ordered takeout. I wasn't a huge fan of the, I assume, blue corn tortilla they used for it. Chips and salsa were OK. I liked the house made chips but the salsa was way too thin and I couldn't scoop anything at all. It was like trying to eat chips with water lol (Flavor was good tho) Empanadas were meh. They were okay but not that flavorful and kind of small. This spot is very a cute place and the people that work there are nice but that's where it stops. When it came to the food it is super salty, a fusion of movie nachos and can black beans. There was a Plus huge portions the food just needs to be edible. They don't know their cut of steaks and they promote one thing and serve you another. I had to call the server several times due to the saltiness of the food it was not edible and return a whole entree. This is my favorite Mexican place on Easton by a mile. Or many miles. I don't think there's anything not delicious here, but my favorite is the al pastor tacos. I'm also a big fan of the mole enchiladas, which have a really good mix of spicy and sweet. I usually get takeout here, but when you sit down and eat, they come out with chips and four kinds of salsa, which is amazing. The guacamole is good too. Again, everything here is solid, so just get whatever you're in the mood for and wait for your taste buds to be overcome with joy. Servers are friendly and patient. I tend to come here at late times after a night out, and I never get any sort of stink eye for that. The decor is also super cute, lots of color and murals throughout the restaurant. Music is fun too. Only possible negative thing I could come up with about this place is in the bathroom there's some sort of skeleton artwork that I feel like makes extreme direct eye contact with me as I'm peeing and that's a little intense.
