It gives off a biker bar vibe just by the looks of it. On one visit I asked my buddy if he had ever been to Wooden Nickel. He admitted that he was a bit intimidated by its appearance. I told him, "Well we're going today"! Off we went. My buddy, my wife Becky and me. We headed down the hill. It was about a 10-minute walk to the primitive parking lot. There was a Ford F150 pick-up truck out front with a huge smoker trailer behind it billowing smoke. The air was filled with the wonderful aroma of smoking meats. We walked inside and it was pretty much what we were expecting. Low ceiling, dimly lit, bar seating, a few tables and a couple of pool tables. We bellied up to the bar and were warmly greeted by the bartender. We ordered our drinks, and I noticed a menu on the table. On this day it was smoked meat. Burgers, ribs, tri-tip, chicken - all cooked right out front. When we saw the pit boss emerge from the behind the kitchen door, we were sad that we already had dinner plans. He was a big 'ol dude wearing a BBQ-stained white apron. We just knew that there was legit food exiting that kitchen. Never judge a book by its cover. Wooden Nickel was great. Friendly folks, cool bartender, smoked meat, cold drinks, cheap prices. There's really not much more to ask for. Wooden Nickel. What a joint!

The kitchen did close early and we did spend quality time with the cook afterwards drinking. We were the only patrons at the bar so all was good! The bartender Anális was soooo nice! She said yes, so I ordered an Old Fashioned and a Double Cheeseburger. My wife ordered a Dirty Martini and the Prime Rib. The drinks came first. I was disappointed to find that my Old Fashioned was made with a different whiskey. If the waitress had come back and told me they didn't carry Woodford Reserve, I would have gladly chosen something else. Instead, I received an Old Fashioned made with something other than what I specifically ordered. My wife's Martini was okay, so I figured we'd give dinner a chance. Unfortunately, dinner was just as disappointing. My wife's Prime Rib was barely warm and extremely salty. The au jus was also incredibly salty. Her meal came with a salad, vegetables, and a small, roughly 2-inch round piece of bread. Of everything on her plate, she said the salad was the only thing she actually enjoyed. My Double Cheeseburger was barely warm as well. The bun was dry and fell apart, almost as if it had been over-toasted. We each took only a couple of bites before deciding we'd rather just get the check and leave. Unfortunately, that turned into another frustrating part of the experience. It literally took about 30 minutes to get our check, and the restaurant wasn't even crowded. It's disappointing because I always thought of the Rustic Inn as one of those San Bernardino places that had been around forever--a place you went for a good drink, dinner, and a little nostalgia. Maybe at one point the Rustic Inn was the place to go. Based on our experience, unfortunately, that time appears to have passed.
