Actually 4.5. We went there for takeout. It is a very neat and tiny restaurant. Most people who went there were for takeouts. However, they do have a few tables if you'd like to dine in. I found this place because my first choice wasn't open on Mondays. The disappointment I had with that situation was more than made up for by finding this place. I ordered 4 quesabirría tacos with the consommé and rice and beans. I sought this place specifically because it serves quesabirría since I've never had it. Quesabirría tacos - flavorful spiciness, nice amount of cheese compared to meat (lamb) served with the typical street taco fare of cilantro/onion mix, salsa verde (lightly spicy), and salsa roja (medium spicy) Lamb Consomme - this was like an au jous to dip the tacos into; cilantro, onions, chopped lamb, beans, and a few other ingredients. A great flavor that complimented the tacos. Rice - Spanish rice at its finest. It looks like it was made with a little bit of tomato paste, onions and salt. It tasted great, tender and not over cooked or crunchy. I put the salsa verde on it about halfway through. Beans - not crushed, blended or mashed like 99% of other Latin restaurants. The consistency was like a thick bean stew. I missed it with a little rice and the salad roja halfway through. Jarritos - tropical punch, my favorite. This little hole in the wall mom and pop place is just the type of restaurant I like finding and going to. Primarily a pick up and go place, it has 4 tables with a 16 person seating capacity. It has a small cooler with drinks and some chilled items to go and small display case of some Mexican pastries (which I didn't try). The lamb barbacoa tacos were very good. The tortilla was soft, chewy, and did not have a gritty texture whatsoever. The lamb portion was generous. The protein was just slightly grainy and stuck on the tooth, but certainly not in a way that was unbearable. The horchata was really terrible. It was extremely watered down. The Sopes gods shine on el pique. At long last I have found a taco shop worth visiting. There are very few things that make me as happy as a bite of good mexican food and this made me VERY HAPPY. First off, this reminds of the taco shops back home. Small. Clean, but unimpressive. Straightforward menu with staples and new takes. A friendly face to take orders and clutch salsas. I tried a few different things: a Lamb Barbacoa and a Campechano taco to start. Than tried some delicious spicy pork and chipotle chicken sopes. First: the tacos were everything street tacos should be. Great tortillas, meat, and veg few toppings. The lamb Barbacoa was very good, but I was way more into the campechano. What really stole the show were the sopes. Oh boy where those sopes good. Perfectly crispy on the outside, light and fluffy interior. Stacked high with meat. Heaven is a place where I can eat those sopes every day. If you haven't had sopes before, try them here. You'll never go back. I saw that this gem had rave reviews so I wanted to try it, and I've been craving tacos. The location was relatively easy to find as we could see the El Pique sign down the street. We arrived at about 3:30 and there was only one couple seated inside. There was also a woman behind the register and she was nice and helpful, but the place was so loud it was hard to hear her. Nonetheless, ordering was easygoing. I got the 5 for $5 texmex chicken tacos with salsa and one churro to go. It cost a little over $6 and was ready in 6mins. The tacos were really good. I could only finish 3 of them, but the chicken was dry. I'm also not very tolerant of spicy food, and the salsa, although amazing, was very hot even though I asked for mild which is suppose to have a kick. On the other hand, the churro was exceptional. This place is fire. I come every Tuesday for lunch for Taco Tuesday and get their 5 for $5 taco deal. You can choose chicken, pork, or steak (1 meat for all 5 tacos) and either American, Mexican, or Tex Mex toppings. I usually go for the pork and tex mex combination and can never finish all 5 because they're so filling (and admittedly heavy). They also do caramel churros which I had never had before here and when they come out fresh and warm they are absolutely delicious. I have yet to try other things on the menu because honestly the Tuesday taco deal is so good that I feel like I'd be losing money if I didn't get it hahaha. I couldn't wait to get back to El Pique for a Taco Tuesday fix. I stuck with chicken once again but promised to push myself and try some of the proteins I've never had before such as the beef tongue and tripe. However, I got the salsa verde this time which was amazing and also the Consome. I absolutely love lamb so I anxiously awaited trying this. The broth was flavorful, aromatic and full of big tender hunks of lamb that really gives the Consome it's satisfying depth. My only gripe being that I found it a bit oily. By the time I finished I felt as though my lips had been slathered with Chapstick, a lambby chapstick. This will not deter my from getting it again. We stopped here for tacos last night after we got home from Austin. We were disappointed in some of the taco places we were sent to by locals there, and wanted to compare to a place RJ heard was good here. This is a little hole in the wall kind of place, and the girl at the counter was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the chicken, beef, and beef and chorizo tacos, RJ ordered tripe and beef, we shared a tamale, and mine came with rice and beans. We also ordered 2 diet Cokes. We paid $22 for this order, in Austin we paid $13 for 6 tacos and a soda. These tacos were pretty good, but the chicken and pork were a little dry, and the chorizo was greasy. RJ said his was was good, but not as good as Austin. You are just not going to get the kind of meat in Delaware that they have in Texas. Overall these were decent tacos. read more

This place has exceptional Mexican food! Make sure to get the pambazo, the sopes, and the lamb consommé! The fries leave something to be desired so I recommend the rice beans or churro as a side! So we are trapped indoors, doubly oppressed by a winter storm and The Rona. I just casually cruised my grub hub app for lunch and this place leaps out at me...I see the authentic-looking taco pics (I've driven across the border in Del Rio, Tx, on a few occasions for a quick fix) and I take a chance. Everything had at least 5 protein options, including eggs or just queso. I can't handle cow products without assistance, and generally stick to lamb and pork nowadays. SO LET ME TELL YOU!!!!! I've slid out of my chair and am currently crying into the empty remains of my lamb stew from under my dining room table. My demolished Al Pastor torte (no cheese) lays in ruins next to my forgotten work laptop. They tossed in 3 carnitas tacos generously coated in cheese-I'd already taken a lactaid to tolerate any surprise dairy in the torte and the stew so I sniffed them and let it go (I'd been blessed enough anyway). I waited to see if my boyfriend was going to remain in that role; thankfully he tasted his food and thoroughly loved his burrito...my soulmate must share my tastebuds. As a rule I do not feel the obligatory sides of beans or rice are ever that tasty and don't include them in my decisions of whether a place is good. They are bland in Mexico so I'm not expecting a miracle in Delaware. FYI; The lamb stew also comes with rice in it. After a nap, my fiancée will hit the carnitas and report back. I was hungry and definitely wolfed it down, but I really thought sausage and steak would stick out in my mind more. Queso fresco was salty and a touch sharp; some avocado on top would've been a great combo, but the woman at the counter forgot to put it on. Overall, the tacos were fine, but I did think the portions were pretty small--I'm usually full after two, at most three tacos, but I was still hungry after four. But I ordered some sopes to go, and was pleasantly surprised to find them crispy and warm, with the take-out box wrapped in clear plastic with no chance of spillage. Really nice and thoughtful touch, which I appreciated. One of the most authentic places to eat great Mexican food in Delaware. I'm 100% Mexican and I go back and forth to Mexico often and this place truly does have that back home taste. From the tacos to the flats, rice, and fresh made flavored waters, this place is the real deal. The barbacoa is to die for but is definitely spicy. The sauces tend to be flavorful and also quite spicy. Sure, it's a small place that's pretty hidden but that doesn't mean it's bad. Some of the best foods I've ever had came from restaurants that weren't in great areas and some times you have to be up for an adventure. Pay no mind to the 1-star givers-- they're either not Mexican or think Tex-Mex food IS Mexican food. Lol! read more

Oh man... quite quite quite disappointed today in the food. Service was awesome as always, but the food... chicken was overly chewy, tough, and had bones. You don't want to eat a taquito or enchilada with an unseen bone in the bite. The flavor was majorly lacking.. it was like day old rotisserie chicken thrown in a tortilla and served up as "Mexican". Okay....so I've been coming here almost weekly, for well over a year and El Pique is solidly the best Mexican around. I can't imagine if this place was in Philly, it would be a straight gold mine. El Pique serves such a wonderful product, has super friendly staff and is pretty damn cheap if you ask me. As a vegetarian, I always order the Farmers cheese tacos with Avocado. Each time I'm there I'm surrounded by the delicious smell by all the different kinds of meat!!!! If you're there after 11am there's a good chance all tables will be full and I've been there a few times when the line has been out of the door. Wow, what a gem! I don't know what took me so long to try this place! This is a very casual "fast food" Mexican restaurant. The inside has about 4-6 booths/tables for seating. You order at the register, pay for your food, and wait... Not a long wait at all. I came with a party of 4, between us we tried tacos, quesadillas, toastadas, chips and salsa, and churros. Unfortunately they were out of guac :( First off, the salsa was amazing. Best salsa I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. I am glad this came in a to-go container, I plan on polishing it off at home. The rest of the food was good as well, pretty authentic. The seasoned chicken and the chorizo was flavorful and juicy. The quesadillas had an adequate amount of cheese. The tacos come with a choice of toppings, and come double layered with tortilla. The tostadas were refreshing as they were topped with lettuce and an adequate amount of sour cream. We also were given a sample of the lamb stew. It was very flavorful and slightly spicy... Perfect to eat when you are sick! We tried both the plain and caramel churros. Both were really good. They were warm, slightly crunchy on the outside, but fluffy on the inside. The caramel one was not overly sweet- it was perfect. Overall, I would definitely come back for lunch or dinner. There are 2 locations, I plan on trying the Newark one next. read more
