I came here one time over 10 years with some of my homegurls from HS and have continued to come back! With my new bachelor lifestyle, I've come to rely on this place for my family-size order of chicken, salad, rice and beans to eat for lunch and dinner and repeat. I have been coming to El Pollo Rico for more than 15 years. Back in the day, at their older location in Wheaton, it was standing room only. In the winter line tou could see the 50 deep spilling out of the door. For what reason one may ask. It was because of the char-broiled goodness that made every bite of chicken, a savory party, in tour mouth. Back then i thought the days of fried chicken were numbered. For $10, you could get a whole chicken with fries or beans and rice. On my most recent visit, at a location they have been for some number of years, the chicken is still tatsy but loss some of its luster. Not to mention, the same meal that i stood in line to eat in degree weather, is now $25. SMH. Coincidentally, i was at Sardis (major competitor) and they are priced a little better and you have several side options to choose from. I DO think Mike B. needs to revisit and write another review. If I were only rating the chicken then I would definitely give their chicken a 4.5, but... Since I am rating the restaurant as a whole I have to go with a 3. The fried yuca was too dry. It comes out of a plastic bag. NOOOOO! Please NO! Needs to be fresh. Fresh fried yuca is so much better. Pollo Rico has reopened in it's new location and after watching Tony Bourdain's send up of the Arlington locale on his most recent episode of No Reservations we decided to make a stop. I've never been to Pollo Rico before but, of course, the raves about their chicken abound. I must confess that I've been a stalwart fan of Crisp and Juicy so I was anxious to see which I liked better, having heard the debates for some time now. We ordered the whole chicken $14.20 with two sides. You get your choice of Fries, Slaw or Tortillas. We took the fries and slaw and also got an order of fried sweet plantain. 1. The chicken is moist and seasoned well on the outside. I found it to be a little less flavorful on the inside than Crisp and Juicy. 2. The Slaw is slammin. Really good. 3. Fries are fantastic. Crispy, fluffy, greasy, salty. I was disappointed that there wasn't an option for fried yucca. 4. Sauces were not really to my liking. The green sauce was unnaturally green and not very spicy. The yellow sauce was good, but not incredible. 5. Fried plantains. Woo Hoo. Real showstoppers. All in all, I liked Pollo Rico, but I think Tony B missed the boat on this visit. I went to Wheaton mall and didn't get shot, and I got to stop by El Pollo Rico. Success! The service was polite and fast and most importantly the chicken was really good. I got the half chicken and each meal comes with fries and cole slaw, neither side am I a big fan of. However, the generously portioned wedge-cut fries were nicely salted as well and was perfectly crisped on the outside and I couldn't stop eating them on my ride back home that they were half gone before I even ate them with the chicken. Cole slaw was meh, but then I was never a lover of cabbage and mayo. Most importantly though the chicken had lots of salty/herby flavor and it was all really moist. I told myself that I was going to eat just a quarter of a chicken and save the rest for lunch another day; that was a stupid lie though because I easily ate it all that sitting. I agree with the previous reviews in that the only real problem with the place is the lack of variety of side items. Fries are awesome and all, but I really like beans and rice with my chicken and they unbelievably didn't have any. In that regards, Sabroso Grill is still my area fave though I have to agree with everyone that El Pollo Rico makes a fine chicken. read more

HUH? After finally trying Pollo Rico for lunch a few days ago, I had to check the sign and address on my way out to make sure I had the right place. Yelp average ratings have never been so conflicting with my own experience. The chicken was slightly dry and the rub (which wasn't spread evenly) was overwhelmingly peppery with certain bites. The skin wasn't crisp. The coleslaw had no taste. The yuca was the only thing I really liked... crunchy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside.... but I couldn't even fully enjoy it because the sauces were so boring. What's yuca without a good sauce? Their other sides? There really isn't much too choose from. Oh yeah, almost forgot (for a reason): I also tried the beans, which tastes more like baked beans you would get at an American barbecue spot than a Peruvian place. Weird. Want perfectly cooked Peruvian chicken that isn't over/unevenly rubbed and a huge selection of sides and awesome sauces? Try Sardi's. 64 reviews and 4.5 stars...and a positive review from Anthony Bourdain???? ummmm....NO. It must have been yelp's April fool's joke. Let me get something straight here. I'm noticing that chargrilled/charbroiled meat at restaurants is becoming such a rarity these days that any restaurant that is willing to go through the trouble of doing so stands out from the pack. This is exactly how I feel about El Pollo Rico. Don't get me wrong, the chicken is definitely better than most places that I have tried in the area, but in no way do I feel it warrants getting anything close to a 4.5* average from more than 50 reviewers. So what are the problems? 1) The charcoal flavor does not fully permeate the meat. The exterior of the meat gets a touch of the charcoal smell, but the moment you bite into the meat the smell will dissipate and it will taste like the same 'ole chicken you get anywhere else. 2) Lack of flavoring in the marinade. Because marinade does not penetrate chicken like it does for beef and pork, I have a predisposition towards chicken dishes that are heavily marinated because it adds the appropriate amount of flavoring. A stronger marinade would have been more appropriate. I think that El Pollo Rico has great potential and that several tweaks will easily allow major improvements to their chicken. However, as it stands now, it is extremely unfair to place El Pollo Rico in the same 4.5* rating category as great joints like Amsterdam Falafel. I feel I get the same question asked to me at least once a month - "If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?" This used throws me into a deep internal, philosophical argument about what truly satisfied my foodie needs, so to save time, I usually dished the stereotypical answer of pizza or chicken fingers just to change the subject. I lacked the confidence to reveal my dream meal because my last food obsession ended with the dreaded FBO (Food Burn Out). My first encounter with FBO happened during my freshman year of college when I became addicted to this ham & cheese panini with sweet potato fries from an on-campus store. Everyday I would have the same delicious panini and everyday I had to pinch myself to make sure I didn't die from it's perfection (or saturated fat + grease combo). Then one day, I became infected with FBO to the point that I couldn't bear the taste or sight of my prized panini. I even took a week long break thinking I could ride it out, but the truth was that my days of two-a-day paninis were over. Countless times after that scaring incident, I have grown disgusted with specific restaurant dishes by the 3rd or 4th visit because my taste buds figure out the culinary secrets and get bored instantly, ruining the dish forever. However, it wasn't until I accidentally stumbled upon El Pollo Rico that my insecurities of FBO vanished and I was finally able to experience a food again and again without unlocking the mysteries it had stored away. Have you ever heard of a life changing experience? If you have $5.30 (plus tax) to spare, then El Pollo Rico can blow your mind: Main Meal -The generous portion of chicken is packed with mesmerizing juicy flavors that make you forget you're in the sketchy part of town (think cash4golds and Western Unions). -The skin is perfectly crisp and stays that way for your entire meal--no soggy bs Sides -The hefty portion of beans and rice would make your fat friends blush -The fried plantains might as well be called liquid gold and sold by the syringe -The accompanying dipping sauces are naughty Price -You simply cannot beat $5.30 for a 1/4 chicken and $7.75 for a 1/2 chicken (both come with two sides)--I wouldn't have a problem dropping $30 for this dish if they had a franchise in NYC. Experience -The fast food plastic chairs/tables and questionable clientele may not go toe-to-toe with Capital Grille, but last time I checked, I was there for the authentic peruvian chicken, not white table cloth sellouts. El Pollo Rico really is rico. Although it can be hard to find parking in the back part of the store due to sharing parking with the surrounding the stores, the line moves quickly once inside. The menu is pretty basic with a couple side options and the chicken being the main component of the meal. They also had tamales which I thought was different than other Peruvian chicken places. The chicken was seasoned and cooked well and the yucca fries were good but a bit too hard. Not giving 5 stars because I think the place can be a little cleaner. The vent located directly above where the chicken is cut has so much accumulated dust. It was kind of gross to see. It's worth stopping in but please clean the vents!! read more

Not surprised to see that this place isn't more price competitive...given their competition, they don't have to be! (Yet, that is!) Be prepared to deal with a line if you go in the evening, and if it's too cold to dine al fresco, you might have trouble finding somewhere to sit. The service was a bit gruffer than I like (think: meanie cafeteria lady), and the kid who handles the transactions at the register really shouldn't hold utensils in the same hand he's using to collect somebody's cash, but overall it's a clean joint with good Peruvian chicken. read more

This is no fine dining establishment, and I feel lucky when I can find a place to sit. But I don't care 'cause their chicken is bangin'. The menu is pretty simple: amazingly flavored chicken roasting before your own eyes as you wait in line to order, and a couple of sides and desserts. To accompany your chicken, get the fries and make sure to dip them in the yellow crack sauce that they give you, and slaw or beans. The rice was disappointingly bland. I also don't remember particularly liking the empanadas. Oh, and it is a LOT of food for an awesome value. Tip: I didn't always know this, but there are two entrances. This place is so good...Their peruvian chicken is good (so moist and seasoned well). The french fries are good. The sweet plantains are good. Their yucca fries are good. Their beans are good...I could go on and on, but seriously back when we came back to florida I started to crave this place! The best part is that its super cheap! Just for $19.50 you can get a whole chicken, and 3 family sides! I highly recommend the beans, fries, sweet plantains, or yucca for your sides. Make sure to ask for more of the white sauce (mayo/mustard/green aji mix) and the green sauce (green aji). Seriously it taste so good on everything! I have read in other reviews that this place can get packed and there is a chance of a line, but when we came here early on a sunday morning there was no line (we probably beat the church traffic). The major con about this place is that compared to the other location in gaithersburg, yucca fries are an additional fee and it is not an option for the 3 family side deal :(. Another minor issue (which isn't bad really) is that they don't sell a la carte whole chickens (I mean who doesn't love more sides?). Parking here maybe an issue as their parking space is a bit small, so there might be a chance you may have to park in the metered sections on the streets. You start wondering where you've been your entire life and question the people who have kept you from it before. Then you wake up the next day. Even though you are by yourself, you aren't afraid. You want it. What I am describing is the beginning of a drug addiction. But now that I think about it, I guess I'm describing the El Pollo Rico Effect. The food is great. The chicken is marinated for over 24 hours and is slow cooked in a charcoal grill. You get your choice of sides, but I always pay a little extra for the platanos. I can't say anything that hasnt been said by my fellow yelpers. I can say that I am very happy that they decided to be legit and use a credit card machine. Sardi's helped get me through college, and people always used to say that the places in Wheaton were even better. Arriving on Friday night for dinner was met with long lines and a dearth of available parking. Luckily, I found a spot in the back of the strip center and soon made my way to the restaurant. Pollo rico is by far the best pollo a la brasa around. Since the new location has opened in Wheaton, the chickens even seem to be a little bigger than before. The chicken is pack with power peruvian?(maybe not peruvian) pallete pleasing particles. The steak fries are cooked to a perfect crisp and are flavored with just the right amount of salt. Pollo Rico's biggest stud however my come in it's smallest package. The addictive yellow and green sauces for dipping are incredible and can stand on their own, but also provide an orgasmic mouth water sensation when combined together. They are so popular that PR now sells them in the coleslaw container for $3. If you have yet to try Pollo Rico, do yourself a favor and give it a shot. I have been eating with my family here since 98 and I am 29 years old. Throughout the years, this restaurant had it shares of problems but I continued going with my famly because of the service, the friendly daminor of the male staff and the chicken of course until 2 months ago, when one of the young female cashier staff most likely under the age of 21 disrespected me when I asked for extra fries, which I was willing to pay for with my whole chicken but because of her attitude, I walked away and said nothing to her. I don't great deal of customer service at this type of restaurant but the lack of customer service at this place had decreased tremendously and they are definitely not going to get my business in the future or recommended their restaurant to my clients at a work event. I'll keep it short and sweet. The chicken was really phenomenal, don't mess with sauces on the meat...or a fork for that matter. The beans were better than i expected simply because of the cilantro. Don't bother with the coleslaw. Pay the extra 3 bucks for the yuca fries. Freshly fried and thick cut, they are perfectly crunchy on the outside and pillowey on the inside. Green sauce is hot, tastes like pulverized jalapenos. Yellow sauce is mild, taste like garlic mayo. **This is a vegetarian's review** Being a vegetarian, I didn't walk into El Pollo Rico expecting to be blown away since I did not partake in their speciality dish, peruvian chicken. My friend really wanted this chicken one night so I tagged along. I had their fries, sweet corn tamale, and rum cake. All three items were just OK, not horrible but not the greatest either. However, this joint has chica morada, a sweet purple corn drink and inca kola, the number one selling soft drink in Peru. It definitely brought me back to my recent Peru trip. It is certainly the best Peruvian chicken in the DMV, and Wheaton's not-so-well- kept secret! It has the best chicken EVER, fries are great, plantains are good and to top it all off, it's cheap! I usually get half chicken with fries for $10, and I usually end up taking the other half home. Keep in mind its not fancy at all, there is usually a line, though it moves pretty rapidly, but its well worth it. Before they moved locations the line would rap down the sidewalk. I've known about El Pollo Rico from back when I used to subscribe to Washingtonían magazine and it would constantly make their Cheap Eats year in and out. But it was seeing it on Tony Bourdain's tour of DC on his old Travel a Channel show a few years back that made me want to check this mini-chain out. After all, I live in the land of El Pollo Loco, which has gone downhill in quality over the years, so maybe I need to travel 3,000 miles east to find a good bird? Maybe I do. This is a very succulent bird. The juices flow from every single bite. Even from the breast meat which is normally a lot drier than the dark meat. The wing was a bit small and overlooked, so it kind of ruined the experience a little, but not completely. The spices and seasoning we're great. Sides? Practically everyone I saw eating seemed to order the same, sad looking steak fries. They looked frozen and probably we're. I couldn't believe everyone was ordering these! Fortunately, I avoided the fries and went for the beans and rice. Great call. The beans and rice were mega hot. Real fresh and loaded with impact. In some ways, these beans were better than the chicken was. And the chicken was pretty good! The place itself is a very, very tiny shopping center.i parked diagonally on the opposite side of the center in front of a 7-Eleven wondering if I'd get ticketed or towed. Fortunately, no. EPR is basically non-descript. Kind of a dive and since it mainly targets the Hispanic and Peruvian communities, I think I was probably the only Caucasian there. But there's a long line, even at 2pm which is when I was there. Don't let any of this deter you. This is some of the finest chicken you'll ever have. read more

Among all the Peruvian rotisserie chicken places I've dined in, El Pollo Rico is the best! I've eaten here multiple times, and the chicken has been consistently flavorful and moist. My wife and I have ordered a whole chicken with sides for dinner and the meal lasts us for two nights. I'm a big eater and can eat a surprising amount of (good) food in one sitting, so this is significant. :) Even as leftovers, the chicken is still as appetizing as it was when you first get it. The key is to reheat in the oven; don't microwave it! I've found baking the chicken at around 350 degrees in the oven for 10 minutes to adequately reheat the chicken yet still retains its moistness. Out of the regular sides offered with the meal, I found the pinto beans and steak fries to taste the best. The rice is just regular white rice, and I'm not a tortilla enthusiast. I've read some reviews complaining about the rice not being seasoned, but I think the reason for this is that the rice is meant to be eaten with the chicken. The chicken packs so much flavor that when paired with the neutral tasting white rice, they actually compliment and balance each other. The pinto beans come in a light sauce that also pairs wonderfully with the rice (Remember, "Beans & Rice" from Schoolhouse Rock?). The steak fries are huge and lightly salted. It's nice that the restaurant is quite generous with their servings of fries. Each order comes with green chili sauce and seasoned mayonnaise. Both are good, but the green chili sauce is my favorite. A note of caution - the spiciness of the green chili sauce has a cumulative effect. The more you eat it, the more your mouth begins to burn. But it hurts sooo good. :) My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that the fried plantains and yucca are not included on the regular sides menu. If you want them with your order, you will have to pay extra. I had them before and they are good. The fried plantains and yucca are actually quite filling, so be careful not to have too much of each or you'll spoil your appetite for the delicious chicken. :D read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat in DC. What makes it so? For very little money, you get a pretty damn good tasting meal that will actually fill you up (AND, I actually tend to have leftovers. wtf?!). My bf and I always split the Whole Chicken meal that comes with two sides-- all for UNDER $15. The sides are completely superfluous and deserve no mention as to quality, though I will say their tortillas are definitely edible (as compared to the typical chewy store bought kind served almost everywhere). The chicken is obvs where it's at. It's incredibly moist, juicy, and flavorful. These people really know how it's done. I will also say that it takes me about a 15-20 minute drive to get there and I go probably once every 2 weeks or so. I'd go all the friggin time if I lived closer. Also needing mention are the sauces-- AWESOME. One is a spicy green salsa, the other is mild and mayo-based. Make a little shredded chicken taco with both these sauces on top = delicioso. Actually 3.5 stars. After the original location burned down a friend told me el pollo rico re-opened. I was ecstatic! Drove over there for lunch and..... Well the chicken is still good, but it's not the same. The old EPR the spices and charcoal flavor really penetrated deep into the flesh of the chicken. This place is still good but not quite there yet. It's a lot cleaner and nicer inside, altho i sort of miss the ambience of the park bench style seating inside the old location, and the owner who would frown at you if you got the chicken to eat there (rather than to go). For those that don't understand the cult like following EPR has, it's for the old location (i think). Give this place some time, all it needs is a few years worth of chicken fat coating the oven :-). read more

I came to this restaurant with really high expectations after hearing how great it was from friends. I tried to really enjoy their chicken, but honestly, today's meal left me disappointed. Maybe it's because I came at the wrong time (slightly after lunch), but is it wrong to expect chicken fresh-out-of -the-oven at a highly rated, popular restaurant? I got the family deal for around $20 which consisted of a whole chicken, 3 sides, and 8 sauces. Unfortunately the whole chicken was mildly warm to cold and fairly dry. I think it's safe to say that it's been sitting out for a while. For the sides, I got red beans, coleslaw, and fries. I thought their red beans were great, but the other two sides are another story. The fries were extremely greasy! One piece of advice that I strongly suggest: Avoid their coleslaw like the plague! I think I'll try to go to El Pollo Rico one more time to give it another chance. As of now though, I think Sardi's in College Park is my favorite place to go for peruvian chicken. read more
