I love a good Peruvian chicken and this one did not disappoint. I ordered the family meal to go on a rainy day so they weren't busy with people dining in so the employees were pretty quick and helpful with making my decision. The chicken was very tender, and the sides were tasty, especially the cucumber salad. It was good. I think the fact that this is "Peruvian cuisine" might be lost on most of the people who eat here. If you look down in your food and see french fries chopped up in your food, you know it's Peruvian cuisine! Spending a month in Peru, having Peruvian friends, and living in NYC, I've eaten an awful lot of Peruvian food. I never really understood the "Peruvian chicken" phenomenon. It rotisserie chicken. I don't understand what makes it Peruvian. Moreover, Peruvian chicken seems to be more popular in Peruvian restaurants in NYC than Peruvian restaurants in Peru. I found the chicken here to be good. The white meat was slightly dry, the dark meat was juicy; cooked well. The chicken themselves were pretty big, and I've found that chickens of this size tend to be slightly tough. The fried yucca was heavenly. But the bad thing about yucca is that you have to eat it right away. The second it cools off, it become waxy and flavorless. We parked right in front. Yay! The price is right. Between parking, the price, and the good food, this place is A-OK in my book. Would I come back on my next trip to DC? Nah. Peruvian places are a dime a dozen. Still as good as ever. Before I could settle on a seat this past Saturday, a whole chicken had been cut up and a side order of mashed potatoes and one of plantains was at the ready. I loved how flavorful and moist the chicken was and how creamy the mashed potatoes were. I'm not a big fan of plantains but they do a great job here. I also liked that the service was not only quick but pretty friendly. Everyone had masks on when near customers and the cashier helped me open a bottle. In the brief 30 minutes or so I was inside, no less than a handful of different customers came in with either dine in or take out orders. Ordered the 1/4 dark chicken with 2 sides. I chose the Chaufa and Platains for my sides. The chicken was as good as others say. Wonderful caramelization on the skin and juicy flavor infused inside. It can be hard to get good roast chicken but Chicken on the Run seems to have perfected it. Chaufa was a bit too salty for me. The plantains were good but I think whatever oil they were fried in had been used a bit too long and had a slight burnt taste to it. I doubt many people would notice this. Combo came with two sauces--one spicy green and one aioli (chipotle aioli). I really enjoyed the later sauce which was wonderfully creamy. Fast service. Good food! read more

My fav Peruvian chicken shop is still District Rico in Dc but this is decent for Bethesda. It is a hole in the wall and good for a quick pick up. It was quite dirty around the table inside. Floors tables walls had stuff on it. We asked whether we could move some of the chairs outside to the existing outdoor table but they said no so we ended up eating a quick meal indoor. Chicken was good and flavorful. Yucca was decent but not the best I've had (the crisp I was looking for wasn't there). I wish they had better sides to choose from, we got the Mac and cheese that wasn't good at all. Reminded me of kraft. read more

Went here on 10-8-202 at 11:50 am and was shocked. Went to go inside and noticed 19 people in an area no bigger than a walk in closet. I was waiting outside patiently as more people walked up. They asked if I was waiting and I told them "there's no way I was going on with that many people in there." I waited for another minute then decided to leave. Then I witnessed those same four people walk right in. Then people wonder why we can't COVID under control. By Bethesda standards, this place would be considered a "hole in the wall". Located in the section of Bethesda (St. Elmo) where there's a bunch of small ecletic shops (like a french video store), heretofore referred to as "Old Town Bethesda" by me to enhance the city's character. This place is easy to miss. So if you read over the prior reviews, you may notice that people describe the white sauce given with each meal as a "cream sauce" or "mayo" or just "white sauce". You guys have no idea what it is right? If I wasn't in polite company I would offer some ideas on what it is, but it's amazing how many people will eat white stuff in a cup that's offered to them without knowing what it is. It's described on the menu as " salsa, mild or picante", and the green sauce falls under that definition too. Rest assured, it's mayo mixed with jalapeno (I had to ask) and absolutely a great dipping sauce for the fried plaintains, which are excellent here. I love the sweet and spicy combo, but I might be weird in that way cause I put mangos in a plastic baggie with Sriracha sauce and eat them all day. The chicken itself had a great rub on it. Peppery and spicy, I found my 1/4 white meat to be flavorful and juicy. The plaintains stole the show and the yuca was ok. They do have a wide variety of sides (beans, rice, salad, mashed potatos). The best part: I got a Jarridos and dinner for under $7, that's cheaper than 2 hours of parking in this meter friendly town. Only challenge is the itty bitty parking lot directly in front of the store, which is also awkward to get in and out of ... but we just park in the garage conveniently next door and run over to order and pick up. The plantains (my favorite) were good, too. The rice and beans were just okay--not a ton of flavor and not mixed well. The standout is really the chicken. Nice and clean spot. Found this little gem while searching for some new quick and affordable lunch spots near my office, and I was very satisfied! You can tell that this place has been here long enough to be a neighborhood fixture, which is always a good first impression. I ordered the 1/4 dark meat chicken with plantains and cole slaw, and it was a TON of food. (Forgot to snag pics, but I'm sure another reviewer left some.) Everything came out in a takeaway box within minutes, and my coworkers and I were on our way back to the office. There is limited indoor seating, so you might have to take your food to go if you come during peak hours. In terms of the food itself, the chicken was juicy and tender but could have been spiced a little more. I also tend to like my cole slaw a little drier than how they made it, but that's a personal preference. I found this place many many years ago, by chance... I was on my way to meet someone for coffee when my nose was sidetracked by this amazing smell. I walked up and down the block 2-3 times before I finally realized I was walking past the small establishment to which my nose was drawing me to. The block is filled with this chargrilled Peruvian chicken smell that makes your mouth water. I keep trying other places just for comparison but I am never as happy or satisfied with my meal like I am when I go to Chicken on the Run. The chicken is full of flavor, fresh, and has a beautiful presentation. The sides are always well prepared and consistent. Price is very reasonable and I never have to wait long. A true hidden gem and hole in the wall in Bethesda. The quality of the food here doesn't compare to the other Peruvian chicken spots I've been to in the area. I ordered a 1/4 white meat with a side of yuca and corn. Let me start of by saying ALL THE YUMMY GOODNESS! The chicken skin had a charred crispy taste and the meat was deliciously juicy. The portions were plentiful and tasteful. The yucca was fresh and fried upon request. The corn salad had great flavor. They hand you two dipping sauces with your order and they charge extra for more. Best part about all of this, the food is reasonably priced for the amount of food they serve. The parking is tiny with a few spots so it's best to park in a garage nearby. A whole in the wall that's worth visiting. Nothing from the exterior gives away how amazing this place is. There aren't that many tables for dining in but we had no trouble grabbing a table for 3 people on a Wednesday evening. On busy times, I think you would have trouble finding a table. The chicken was moist and tasty. Sides were great. I really enjoyed the Yuca fries. The only down side is that there could be more sauce provided. Extra sauces cost $.5 but maybe you can ask nicely for more. For $12 including taxes, you can get half a chicken and 2 sides which is definitely enough for dinner. Pretty good price and value. This place will seriously challenge even the most ardent members of the clean-plate club. For just under $8, you can get a 1/4 of a chicken and two sides. Though they offer a number of healthier sounding options, I couldn't pass up the fried yucca and sweet plantains to accompany my meat. After paying at the counter and waiting for my number to be called, I was presented with a plate literally overflowing with delicious food and two small containers of sauce, a spiced mayo-like orange sauce and a spicy and flavorful chunky green sauce. The chicken is moist and flavorful throughout, and the two sauces add extra zing. I lucked out and got a fresh batch of friend yucca that was crispy and perfect. The plantains were extra sweet and made a great dessert-like finish to my meal. Though takeout seems to the be the way to go here because the space inside is quite small, there were plenty of seats at a little bar area and a few tables wedged inside the tight space. After coming to this place something close to a year, last night, with regret, I came to the conclusion that I am not coming back. Everytime I have come to this place, I have never been disrespectful or arrogant, in despite to the employees not being so friendly, I would always be friendly with them, and ask politely for my order. I asked why was that and she said because when its close to the time of closing they don't want to be left out with all the legs and thighs (they close at 9:30pm and it was barely 8:00pm), I smiled and in a nice way suggested that they could come up with some specials for the next day using the chicken that was left. At the end they sold us the two breast. Last night, we arrived and we order half chicken white again, and a guy, the one that is always working behind the line with the chicken, was on the register and he told us that he ran out of breast. So we left. Ok, so if I wanted a whole chicken, they wouldn't be able to sell it because they did not have more breasts? They have it on their menu as a choice, you even pay more for white meat, so why would they deny us two freaking pieces of chicken breast? That is just so ridiculous. I don't even live that close to this place, and I left my house with my husband, drove there wanting to eat their food, and they gave us this disrespectful attitude, saying they ran out of chicken breast! This is the newest of my favorite restaurants in Bethesda and I'm so excited to have found it! I first tried it when it was the top rated on Yelp in Bethesda and with that price, clearly I had to check it out! I was very pleasantly surprised. The concept is so simple yet the food is so good, and the price is even better. I always feel like it is more of a home cooked type of meal and it feels cozy in the restaurant even though it's pretty normal and nothing too special in the atmosphere.
