I don't know if the white man with the curly hair was having a bad day. I never feel the need to make reviews as a fellow food service employee but his approach, demeanor, and lack of respect experienced in my 30 second interaction was astounding and disappointing. After I asked for a beer, the "bartender" looked me dead in the eye and said "pale ale" while pouring an expensive glass of wine. I didn't want to bother asking for another drink considering how absent he presented himself. His ego was highly apparent, and I could feel his bitter, pretentious attitude as soon as I walked up to the bar. He didn't bother addressing me, and stared at me blank face with no expression which made me feel highly uncomfortable. This is a cute place but this place would benefit from a friendlier staff. Based on the people I've talked to, it also doesn't seem like it's an isolated incident. Unfortunately, the music selection was also poor. read more

Perfect in every way. I love it here. Beautiful space, great energy. Every single time I'm served up with amazing vibes, wine, service, snacks, and tunes (all vinyl). It's everything I look for in a seriously solid local wine bar, with some interesting surprises, i.e. a little back area + who would have thought that their hot dogs are so tasty? Honestly I remember thinking they taste like Japanese hot dogs (where there is a crisp to the bite) and the bartender told me they actually have that Japanese mayo (kewpie) as one of the condiments, along with this stellar spicy mustard. But enough about the dogs (and the hot dog machine decoy, it's an art installation), I think I need to stop yelping this close to lunchtime. read more

The last 2 times I've come here, I've been scolded by the staff for sitting in the wrong place or ordering incorrectly, and directly ignored at other times when I was waiting to order. Last night, a staff member came over to our seats and said angrily "did you order rose?" And I said "oh yes is it at the bar??" he was extremely stern and told me in the future, we cannot to move from the bar to the seats, as if we are children or we might start coming here and doing this all the time just to cause confusion. And when I told him it was not trying to skip out on my tab, and why I moved from the bar to a seat, because new friends had come in and were sitting there, he told me to repeat myself with an energy that suggested he was going to fight me or kick me out. It ruined my night. He had my friend's card already. I don't know if this is an issue they have regularly, but we left soon after, and that is the last time I'll be going to El Prado. Love this bar- it's the Cheers of the LA art world and for good reason; the natural wine selection is the best in town, the nettle tea on draft is a delightfully interesting N/A beverage, and the hot dogs are worthy of their own visit. My favorite time to go to El Prado is Sunday evenings, when the already near perfect ambiance is somehow improved by Jay Israelson's weekly live piano residency, playing some of my favorite Steely Dan and Michael Franks tunes. It's a simple, classy wine and beer bar. It's got that mature and slightly upscale feel that makes you feel like you should order a malbec even though it's hot and you want a draft pilsner, as I realized here over Labor Day weekend. You can have nice conversations here as it doesn't get too loud (I suppose) and there is a ton of room along the back wall in case the few tables (there are like 3) and the bar seats are all filled. This place is really accessible and near other places, so it's a good place to start the evening or catch up before you crawl on to other pubs. read more

El Prado is a lovely little beer and wine bar on Sunset in Echo Park. It's a hip sort of place with interesting wines and beers on tap. The decor is functional and unpretentious but nothing about the place reads dive bar. I went with a sizable group last Thursday, both at 6:30 and 9 or so, bookending a reading at Stories across the street. Unsurprisingly, it was much more crowded at 9, but I got to sit down both times. The bar was always accessible, and service was good. I stuck to beer that night, starting with a delicious glass of Smog City Double Stout. The menu didn't list ABV but this beer gave me an instabuzz that lasted a couple hours. Later my friend Ben L. bought me a birthday IPA. I forget what kind it was but I liked it. We also split a cheese plate. It came with two cheeses plus a little salami and crackers and fig jam, and it was good but puny. It was all I ate all night, which may explain my unusual susceptibility to a little beer. The night ended with smoke and air and a long conversation about love with a friendly stranger on the tiny back patio. I woke up with a weird micro-hangover, but with positive feelings for El Prado intact. read more

I think I've ever one starred two other place, and it was a drive through Starbucks, and the traffic department at the Los Angeles County Courthouse, and honestly, I'm now rethinking those reviews because there were both a more service oriented, less rude experience than El Prado. Honestly, haven't been to El Prado in a while even though I live down the street, and now I remember why. When I checked out after a couple beers (which were, honestly, the worst pours I've had in a MINUTE. Literally 25% foam), bartender gave me the wrong credit card. When I calmly informed her it wasn't mine, her response was, and I quote, "Drink your beer", and then returned to her conversation with a friend without another word. Congratulations. You have failed at the bare minimum of doing your job, and the bare minimum of common curtesy. Hopefully next time you pass off another customers card without paying any attention, they go on a spending spree. Won't be back. read more

Two things need to happen for this place to be a spot I want to visit regularly: 1- Prices need to come down a tad, and 2- The noise level needs to come down as well. Every time I come here I like the beer, and although they aren't exactly blasting music, it is loud enough where everyone is talking loud and talking over each other and the music. Soon enough everyone is yelling because no one can hear each other. This is a small place, so it really does not need to be a loud environment. Another thing that bothers me about bars these days is that since they are often serving specialty beers, they often do not mention what kind of a glass you are getting it is, and hence what serving you are getting. If you are trying to save a little cash, and all the beers are in the $7-$9 each category except one at $6, you'll probably get the $6 one, but it will be in a tulip class, not a pint. I think all beers should be served as a pint, and none of this tulip glass half sized trickery. At the very least, that is dishonest. Other than that, this isnt a bad spot to drop in for a pint after gorging yourself at two boots, or vis-versa. read more

When I walked in, it reminded me of the Albatross Pub in Berkeley, but more clean. This place is small, crowded, loud, and definitely has a local vibe. If you love beards, this is a mecca. Good place for a drink and people watch, such as this guy writing notes in his binder whilst talking to his friends, eventually shouting "I have a lot going for me right now!" I love the atmosphere and ambiance at El Prado! Dim lighting, nice and simple selection of wine and beer, and all around chill people. Also, there's just something about music from a record player that I just love! The hardest part is trying to find a place to sit if you're with a group of friends because the place is pretty small. I cheat, for the sacrifice I make to eat a hot dog. Because what good is a dog without the bun? Without the bun you just look gross. Don't handle that dog around a stranger bun less?! That's just nasty , thanks. Unless you go into allergic shock then ... I'm so sorry handle bunless. I digress. The hot dog is excellent, so are the snacks , the beer , the kombucha and other non-alcoholic bevs bb! Music? Yep! They spin records , hear me out...it's not as hipster as that might sound. They spin GOOD records and have GOOD djs. There feel better? Hmmm what else can I say... as someone who is definitely not 'cool' I don't feel 'vibed' out. 2014 YELP 365 CHALLENGE - 250/365 I don't normally go to bars/don't really drink in general, so this is my take on the actually facility. Pretty small bar, but I liked that it was on the more modern side. I wasn't really sure what to expect at first, because there is a curtain at the entrance which completely blocks out any view of the interior of the bar. The lighting was slightly dim but not ridiculously dark where you can't see the people sitting right in front of you. They had a really long bar area, and some bar seating against the wall. I came with a group of 6 people which made it awkward to have conversation either at the bar or at the wall seating, but we got lucky and snagged this table at the back of the place which was great for having easy conversation with everyone. It was relatively clean, and wasn't run down or grimy at all, which I really appreciated because I HATE bars that are like that. It was a little loud in there so I had to raise my voice a little, since my voice doesn't really carry in loud places, but it wasn't totally unbearable. I didn't order a drink so I don't really have anything to say about that. Overall, it was a pretty decent place and I appreciated that it was trendy and not dirty, but there wasn't anything that really wow'd me or impressed me enough to make me a fan of it and give it 4 stars. 3 stars for good measure. read more

I met my date here last night. Even though I knew it's a beer and wine bar, I still wanted to check it out. Walking up to it, I noticed it's in the same building as my old dentist (actually, he's still my dentist, but I go to his other office now). Parting the curtain, you almost immediately run into the one long bar. It was packed which seemed unusual for a Monday night. I ordered the Stone Smoked Porter which was easy drinking. A pint was $6. I didn't bother looking through the wines. Bar snacks like olives and nuts were fairly reasonable but I had already grabbed a slice of pizza from across the street. We sat in a tiny booth. You would never even notice the two small booths on either side of the door unless you knew they were there. There were some additional seats against the wall but no ledges so it'd be awkward to sit there with your glasses. After a bit, the whole place cleared out. I miss my 20's occasionally. I miss having the patience to put up with music that's trendy but not actually good. I miss thinking a place is cool just because it's got good lighting and interesting beer. I miss not caring so much when things are crowded and people are stepping in my dance space. El Prado is not mellow or chill or cool. It is packed to the gills with the hoodie brigade and their urban outfitted lady friends. It's fine if you get there early, but if you don't, beware the crowd. You'll be pushed up against the wall more times than a baby-faced prisoner. If that still sounds appealing to you, order the beer because by god the wine is the worst swill I've ever forced down my throat. Impressed by the prices of $5 a glass? Mais non, mon ami. This wine is worse than boxed. It's worse than vinegar. It's worse than Two Buck Chuck. Run away, run away. And when you run, run down the street to City Sip. They serve real wine. And have more space. And they have real food, too. And people there actually dress themselves like they've graduated from Kindergarten. I am not a hipster hater. I also don't try to be too specific or descriptive when pinning down the pejoratives of the negatively connoted 'hipster' clarification, b/c too often i see little bits and morsels of hipsterdom reflected back on good ole' yours truly. imagine the old 70's vinyl cover of Billy Joel's 'Glass Houses' and you see my predicament. HOWEVER, i must say that this place makes me a bit overzealously and somewhat judgmentally yet totally justifiably railing against the superficiality, hypocrisy, and general under-whelmingness of the overly-arrogant excesses of hipsterdom. CASES IN POINT: 1) Is it really necessary to glare disgustedly at certain peeps who might have good fashion/style/positive vibe, but don't happen to prescribe to a T to your costumed aesthetic and affected conformist pseudo-individualist hipster zombie-ism idiosyncracies? 2) Craft Beers=Ridiculously price gauged semi-interesting designer brews? Blech. 3) A Kinda Sorta Wine Bar?--This place has cruddy wines and has anything but a chill loungy wine vibe, it's virtually impossible to sit at the bar or at a table and relax with a glass. 4) Peeps are generally unfriendly and the fact it's a close-quartered hallway does not help the mingling, which certainly seems counterintuitive. Instead, it's as if people are only interested in communicating thru dirty looks when you inevitably run into them while passing by. Like it's avoidable, douchey??!!! 5) CLOSES EARLY. Both times i been here, i've been whisked out WELL BEFORE the normal 2am cleanout time, according to the bouncer it's due to compliance with draconian early curfews imposed by the folks in the neighborhood. I DID find some chillaxin' time once i meandered back out the front door into the fresh sunset blvd sidewalk air. Exhaling, I smelled a delightful sublime neighborhood treat.... TACOS ARRIZAS Anyone? No longer "just a beer bar", the caliber of El Prado just increased dramatically with the written-on-mirror wine list. I love El Prado. I have been a constant there and plan to continue. But I hope someone pays attention to his review, especially the new bartender who has straight black hair with bangs or her employer. I get back from a long vacation and now there is a new bartender and wine. I like the wine, but the new bartender has a problem. We walked in around 11pm and sat through literally 4 songs (didn't have a stopwatch) before she approached us to ask for an order. That is at least 7 minutes, probably more like 10. I don't mind snooty service, which she is skilled at as well. But I prefer my bartenders to be better skilled at taking orders and pouring rather than fiddling with glasses behind the bar for 5+ minutes. This was a tuesday night where there were still stools empty at the bar. The place was deserted. There was nothing urgent keeping her. She was not taking any other orders. She was fiddling with glasses and rearranging things behind the bar. It was pretty unacceptable. I will go back definitely, but if service like this continues I will start going elsewhere. read more
