This bar is located in the neighborhood I grew up in and it's one of the only bars that have stayed true to the old school neighborhood vibes. 1642 is comfortable and effortless, it possess a low maintenance, chic atmosphere. I believe it is an exclusive beer and wine bar with a few select red and white wines and beers. It's dimly lit and the chalkboards were a little smudged and hard to read, but the bar tender told us our choices for reds and we ended up getting a bottle of Cotes Du Rhone. There's no table service, even if you order a bottle, you'll have to make a few trips from the bar to your table but it's all part of 1642 Beer & Wine. Our bottle of red was really yummy and I guess we were shocked since it was $26. While we were sipping and enjoying ourselves a duo came in and performed on the piano and banjo which was the perfect touch. If you're looking for a low key place to grab a bottle of wine or beer with a few friends then this is your place. The noise level is low and dress casual or however you want. Tips: Street parking only and it's everywhere.

THE HIDDEN DIVE! After greets and eats up the street at the Dollar Hits Food truck, fellow Yelpers and I came here for some potations to properly pacify provisions in our paunch. Formerly Lupita's, a gangster hangout, 1642 Bar provides a safe haven for locals, visitors, and those lookin to break away from the hipsters of nearby Echo Park. We arrived on foot, which is a good thing since the outside is clearly not clearly marked. Signage is not in, Vegas style flashing lights, nor Hollywood search lights, instead modest signage has been painted along the wall just outside the front doorway. The interior is rather dark; libation menu written in colored chalk on a blackboard hangs on the wall above the bar, strings of lights blaze their trail along an exposed brick wall, while sconces strategically placed to showcase tapestry, hang on the walls, and candles set the scene for a relatively wheeeeelaxin' time. IN A SHOT: Metered street parking, if you ascertain any. Heck, if you can find this hidden dive. 1642 is an establishment that offers a relaxing atmosphere to get yer booze and brews consumption on. While you have to order at the bar, the menu is posted high enough for all to see, no matter how many people deep the line is to your libation. Cheeeerzzzz!!

The bar itself has a cozy atmosphere, and the photo booths are a great touch. We first ordered drinks from a female bartender who was friendly, professional, and served us quickly. The restrooms were clean and spacious. Having only two stalls for such a busy venue isn't ideal, but it could always be worse. Later, we went back to order another round. An older white bartender wearing glasses started serving us, and while he was preparing our drinks, he was also taking another group's order at the same time. I completely understood that since the bar was very busy. We ordered two Whiskey Sours and one of the bar's signature cucumber cocktails. The Whiskey Sours were served in margarita glasses without ice instead of traditional whiskey glasses. I assumed they had simply run out of the proper glassware because the bar was packed, so we didn't complain. The real problem started when it was time to pay. The bartender placed the payment terminal in front of the other group instead of us, and they accidentally paid for our order. Instead of acknowledging that it was his mistake, he immediately acted as if it was somehow our fault. We tried to resolve the situation calmly and even offered to pay the other group's bill and buy them an extra drink to make up for the price difference (their bill was about $31, while ours was around $45). When it came time for us to pay, I chose not to leave a tip because of the multiple mistakes that had already happened. At that point, the bartender completely lost his temper. In the middle of a packed bar, he raised his voice and started yelling at us, saying it was disrespectful not to tip him. He also complained that we had ordered drinks that weren't on the regular menu and that making them had taken him "so much time." As a bartender myself, I know exactly how long it takes to make a Whiskey Sour, and it's certainly not an unusually time-consuming cocktail. If preparing it had been a problem, he could have simply told us before taking our order. He continued shouting that the bar was extremely busy, called our behavior "disrespectful" and "f***ed up," and finally told us he would never serve us again. We were honestly shocked. This was the first time we've ever experienced someone reacting this aggressively simply because we chose not to leave a tip, especially after such poor service. I've worked in customer service for years, and I always tip when I receive good service. I would have had absolutely no problem leaving a generous tip if our experience had been pleasant. After that confrontation, we no longer felt comfortable staying in the bar, so we left immediately with a very negative impression. Looking back, I wish I had read the reviews beforehand. It seems that many of the negative reviews mention the exact same bartender. A truly disappointing experience.

They found us a seat w/o a proper reservation, and the place was lively. Ordered the hummingbird, which was unexpectedly herbaceous. Tangy with smoky undertones. Refreshing. I quite enjoyed it. The husband got the bellhop, which he said was fine but not mind blowing. We ordered the Chicken liver toast, fried mozzarella, and chicken sandwich hot and spicy. The husband got the mussels. Chicken liver toast was served w mustard seed and berry compote, which highlighted the buttery fatness. The toast wasn't crunchy and a bit difficult to cut, but the pickled vegetables were fantastic. The fried mozzarella was simple and decently executed, somewhat generic and forgettable. Better than standard mozzarella sticks. The fries were crisp and perfectly seasoned. A+. That chicken sandwich was toothsome and juicy. Def worthy of a repeat visit. I'll be thinking abt this sandwich for a while. Of his mussels, the husband appreciated the spicy broth but was underwhelmed by the crusty bread it accompanied. I had a wonderful experience personally, hence the 4 stars, but proceed with caution.
