This is a local place with regulars in the echo park neighborhood. They often have old-time music and if you go on a Tuesday night you will find ragtime music performed by a skilled gal and a talented guy whose day job is a Metro bus driver. Yes, it is quaint, small, homegrown and conductive for first-date meetups and for folks who enjoy quality wine and beer at low prices. It is the type of spot you could start chatting with a stranger at the bar and learn that he is a mechanic around the corner. Unbeknownst to him, you happen to be looking for a new mechanic. He shares his philosophy about how the dealers so often rip off the customers and how he works for himself now and wants to help people with their cars because he likes supporting his neighbors and using his mechanical knowledge. This is the type of bar where you could run into Los Angeles musical royalty, just sitting there enjoying a beer. This is the type of bar which hears a story about a set of puppies which need homes and immediately helps put together an ad-hoc adoption committee. It is the type of bar who supports neighbors and friends going through a crisis. It is a bar that is truly a community. But also a nice place to have a drink! read more

I was looking for a quiet place on my way home to have a glass of wine late at night. I wasn't having much luck at 11pm but found this little bar off the beaten path thanks to Yelp. I was surprised to hear soft, acoustic, live music and hushed conversation. It was perfect! While the establishment was quite full, it wasn't completely packed and a friendly crowd assembled on the sidewalk for conversation. Limited wine selection. I wasn't familiar with what they had and the bartender offered for me to taste before selecting which I appreciated. Investigation revealed they have live music multiple times a week and I returned for ragtime Tuesday. The chatter was louder this time but not deafening and at an appropriate level respectful of the music. This is definitely a gem of a spot if you're into such things. So cute! The vibes and aesthetic of this place is amazing! It's such a small hole in the wall little beer and wine bar (no liquor!) but it's so unique. We just recently moved up the street and wanted to explore and go out for a couple drinks one weekend and came across this place. We just walked here from home and got to walk right back after we were done. We stumbled in on a live music night from a French group and it was so busy! We luckily got seats at the bar not long after we arrived and stayed for about an hour just enjoying the music and each other. Great little date night spot to end the night. 1640 bar is what this world hopes to be. The bartender recommended an excellent Sauvignon Blanc that did not disappoint. The black guy at the bar asked me what I was drinking, and then we got to talking about my home state of Oregon and his experience is traveling up there. I wondered if I was in some kind of commercial advertising a better world. But no; this bar is just cool. The first band started to play: a bass player in a cocktail dress slit up one side and an accordion player who sang. My friend played his dumbeck drum with them as I tried to count the time signatures. The guy at the next table, a friend of the bass player's, saw me counting and we tried to figure out the music together. A blond woman a few tables down got up and did a sort of Greek variation on belly dance. All too soon it was over and the next band went on: a violinist and her boyfriend with a topknot who played an instrument that looked like an Oud. After they played a few songs, the bass player from the first band got up. It was Greek Easter Saturday, she said. She had purchased 28 hard-boiled eggs with their shells dyed red. She was going to give one to every table. You were supposed to tap your egg against your neighbors egg, and whoever's egg broke, lost. The band would buy the winner a drink. Well, my egg broke right away, but with the woman next to me was the winner of the entire bar and she stood up and took a bow to thunderous applause as the music continued to play. Then things began to climax: the two bands joined forces and played together, and this was my favorite part of the evening. The bellydancing woman brought more people up and a grand dance party began. The audience clapped their hands to the music and yelled "opa!" The band ended with "Misirlou," and I had never heard it played as a traditional Greek tune before. When it was all over we exchanged phone numbers and Instagram accounts. This bar is located in the neighborhood I grew up in and it's one of the only bars that have stayed true to the old school neighborhood vibes. 1642 is comfortable and effortless, it possess a low maintenance, chic atmosphere. I believe it is an exclusive beer and wine bar with a few select red and white wines and beers. It's dimly lit and the chalkboards were a little smudged and hard to read, but the bar tender told us our choices for reds and we ended up getting a bottle of Cotes Du Rhone. There's no table service, even if you order a bottle, you'll have to make a few trips from the bar to your table but it's all part of 1642 Beer & Wine. Our bottle of red was really yummy and I guess we were shocked since it was $26. While we were sipping and enjoying ourselves a duo came in and performed on the piano and banjo which was the perfect touch. If you're looking for a low key place to grab a bottle of wine or beer with a few friends then this is your place. The noise level is low and dress casual or however you want. I was honestly blown away by this bar. I was a little worried that 1642 would be packed on a Saturday night since this bar seems to have gained a lot of traction in the past few years. We came at around 10:30, and there was a nice live band playing. The lighting was dim, and we were easily able to grab two free seats at the bar. Most people seemed to be regulars or friends of the musicians and were mostly focused on the show. The atmosphere is just amazing. Incredibly laidback with a great beer menu. The pretzels are a nice touch, and the bartenders are fairly sociable. 1642 lacks any pretentiousness, and is genuinely a great place to hang out with a drink or two. This is definitely not the place to get wasted at or be loud and rambunctious. This kind of bar is a rare find in LA, and one that I hope stays this way!! read more

THE HIDDEN DIVE! After greets and eats up the street at the Dollar Hits Food truck, fellow Yelpers and I came here for some potations to properly pacify provisions in our paunch. Formerly Lupita's, a gangster hangout, 1642 Bar provides a safe haven for locals, visitors, and those lookin to break away from the hipsters of nearby Echo Park. We arrived on foot, which is a good thing since the outside is clearly not clearly marked. Signage is not in, Vegas style flashing lights, nor Hollywood search lights, instead modest signage has been painted along the wall just outside the front doorway. The interior is rather dark; libation menu written in colored chalk on a blackboard hangs on the wall above the bar, strings of lights blaze their trail along an exposed brick wall, while sconces strategically placed to showcase tapestry, hang on the walls, and candles set the scene for a relatively wheeeeelaxin' time. IN A SHOT: Metered street parking, if you ascertain any. Heck, if you can find this hidden dive. 1642 is an establishment that offers a relaxing atmosphere to get yer booze and brews consumption on. 1642 Beer and Wine is a small cozy bar on the outskirts of downtown, on a block where parking is actually kind of easy. I came with a big group on a Friday night, and the place was busy but not too hectic. I liked the dim, intimate atmosphere, the reasonably ample seating, and the accessible bar. The place is not pretty from the outside, but the inside is neat. It feels hidden away because of the location, and it gets less of a mob than it would attract on like Spring or Main. We all got to sit, eventually, and the noise level was high but not obnoxious. We were able to talk and hang out without issue. I think the menu is all beer and wine, and the selection is decent, written on a chalkboard. I had a bottle of Black Market Hefeweizen, and Matt B. had a nice IPA that was on tap. I asked for a draft recommendation, but something was lost in translation. Oh well. The bartender was friendly and seemed knowledgeable, anyway. 1642 is a pleasant, tucked away spot, and I hope to come back soon. I snapped up a couple of cold IPAs...but I noticed something unusual: They serve Founder's Breakfast Stout. On tap. By the pint. If you know what that means, you know that I shouldn't even be telling you this information. That is a magical beer, and hard to come by -- especially this far west. In any case, we guzzled our suds at one of the small, candle-lit tables. Once the music started, you could hardly move in this joint, and the heat kept rising. We left the dancing to the pros, while we stuck to our talent: drinking more beer. The live jazz flowed on into the night, and we almost felt like we weren't in Los Angeles anymore. There was a long standing joke in our house that we would never come here again. This was where we had our first date. It was literally the first time I ever laid eyes on my mancat in real life. There he was! Waiting by the door. And there I was! Nervous! And there we were! In 1642, with a loot player and no beers on tap and candle light. And there we sat, for 3 hours, and began the rest of our lives. It is geographically the most important spot on the planet to me. For the next 3 and a half years, I begged to go back. I begged, BEGGED my mancat to take me back there, to relive our glorious beginnings. And I was met with a constant, "No. That bar sucks." ....?!?! Uh, sir, I know WAY MORE OTHER BARS THAT SUCK, this isn't one of them! So imagine my surprise when 3 and a half years later, mancat pulls out some thing about "date night" and says we're going HERE. I legit burst into tears. Then about 30 minutes later he proposed (!!), and we walked over to 1642 to celebrate and begin the rest of our lives together, again, at the same bar. They have taps now! I love it. The beer selection is excellent, the vibe inside is still moody and reminds me of New Orleans. We had some excellent sour beers and sat at the exact same table as our first date and the rest is history. He even admitted this was not what he remembered, it was BETTER. BTW did I say I love it? Don't go here. 1642 isn't somehow still the best secret chill bar in LA. It's not perfect for friends, first dates, solo nightcaps and multitudinous other adventures. There's no reason to suspect that Django-style guitarists and unannounced piano players will materialize out of the candle flickering gloam to cast love spells bouncing off of bare brick walls. It's not that kind of bar. The owner probably won't remember you, certainly not a decade after you first visited. The beer and wine can't be meticulously selected and recommended, somehow making you feel intimately welcomed, even in a crowd. Definitely don't come to 1642. Just keep walking. Totally understand the hesitation of writing a review on this little diamond in the rough. The neighborhood is less than desirable but that makes what lies behind this venue's stucco walls that much more exciting. It's like walking into a completely different world...the whole stepping through the mirror analogy. The music is absolutely intoxicating...it's a light, contemporary jazz that allows for conversation to flow and the romantic lighting conceals gentle brushes of the leg or cheek. They have a couple of craft beers on draft (I sucked down two Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Ales), as well as bottles, and wine. The complimentary pretzels and peanuts are a nice touch, too. Met a slew of great characters on an early Thursday evening (free tamales until 8 or 9pm) and now I can't wait to bring every single person I know here in attempt to impress them with my knowing of all things underground. Though, I understand that compromises its reputation, but I have to let the cat out of the bag (speaking of, they have a bar cat). Uh oh! Looks like the secret's out about 1642... Sorry to all of you who'd like this hidden gem to go unearthed. Very cute/swank little bar in Silver Lake that reminds me of a few of my favorite bars back in St. Louis. It has that old timey feel to it with art deco-style lights and tin moldings on the ceiling. You'd never know it from the outside, which gives it that speakeasy feel, too. Without the lines, stupid passwords or bartenders dressed like newsboys of course :) Drink menu is pretty expansive considering the size. Since I'd been drinking wine practically all day, it only made sense to continue with the tradition here. Had a red blend of some sort (we'd been drinking all day, so excuse my poor memory) and it was only about $8, which is pretty reasonable for such a big pour. Love the pretzels and nuts at the bar, too. Not the gross kind you see at dives. This seemed to be bacteria free. The only thing missing? Someone playing ragtime on a piano in the back. Prior to it's current installment, the 1642 was infamously known as "Lupita's" which attained somewhat of a rep. amongst neighborhood resident's. It's good to see that the latest rendition has steered clear from it's predecessors past exploits. From the outside, the bar has the appearance of a "hole in the wall" so keep an eye out for the address while passing by or you just might miss it [hint: the locale is across the street from the Cafe that looks like something outta the film 'George of the Jungle' - minus Brendan Frasier, than again...Encino Man II might not hit theaters until 2016. He's likely bussing tables]. As far as the interior, management has done a fine job with fixing up the joint. The decor is subtle & the lighting fixtures are perfect -- not too dim nor too bright. Aside from the bar area, a nice arrangement of tables are available for couples or small groups. The place somewhat resembles El Prado in EP. With regards to the selection of brews; if your hankering for PBR, Corona or Miller Light, well head out the front door & take your behind to the nearest convenient store. Because they ain't having that ish here. Rather, a diverse selection of domestic & international brews are at your disposal; from Victory Prima Pils, Iron Fist - Spice of Life, Maui Coconut Porter, and (one of my personal fav's) Avery White Rascal (rather rare in these parts -- earns a gold star in my book) On the flip side, the happy hour sch'd is rather sketchy. No happy hr present at 6pm on a Friday night! What gives? For all the animal enthusiast (and haters), they have a feline mascot that lounges around the bar. Cute & all, but Sylvester laying atop of the bar & tables kinda raises the County Health red card. There is a back area where patrons are permitted to smoke; however, I don't think neighboring residents would be too appreciative. Patrons are a mixture of a neighborhood residents, scenesters & aspiring artist/ musicians. On the night I ventured on out, I had colorful convo's with an artist who bared a striking resemblance to Ramona Flowers (À la Scott Pilgrim Vs.) and a gentleman who claimed to be part of a "secret society" via a prestigious Ivy league school out of the East Coast (ha!). The 1642 is a welcoming addition to the neighborhood. On Wednesday's live bands perform a mixture of genre's; from bluegrass to indie-folk. Another welcoming sight, complementary peanuts & pretzels at your disposal. This may sound pretty basic, but far too often these days, numerous establishments across SoCal don't bother to offer or in some instances...even CHARGE for peanuts n' munchies (I'm looking at you Bigfoot Lodge). C'mom people, have we've lost our mannerisms & etiquette at our local watering-hole's? For shame... Luckily, there are still joints similar to the 1642 that remembers the way of the pint: affordable prices set to the common folks budget. read more

This is one of those places you don't want to write about because then everyone will see how great it is and want to come and make it busy and crowded. I am one of those people that found it on Yelp and is now perpetuating the cycle of everyone finding out. Go me. Hopefully some will be deterred by the neighborhood. So yes, it's in a random, slightly sketchy part of town that you probably haven't been to on purpose. Blink and you'll miss the entrance to this place (I drove around in a circle about twice before figuring it out). Parking is on the street and it wasn't hard to find but all you owners of high end cars are probably going to shy away from leaving your luxury vehicle here (and that's why I'm clinging to my good ole Honda 'cause I can park her anywhere). Anyways, once you've figured out where the hell you are and you've made it inside, it's basically the perfect lounging bar. It's dark, not crowded (even on a Saturday at like midnight), it's QUIET enough to hear other people talking (amazing) and the bartender was super cool. Did I mention ample seating?
