During theme nights, this spot is PACKED! I stopped by for their Butchona night and there were what felt like hundreds of people. It was honestly suffocating on the dance floor. There was little to no air flow and our group was sweating profusely which seemed really unnecessary in LA on a cool night. They could've turned on the A/C or opened more doors. Thankfully, the bartender got our order and drinks out quickly. They also sell food here like wood fire pizza. Overall, a so-so experience and not interested in going back. read more

My buddy Conrad, and I, explored Echo Park, more specifically its Sunset strip. And this spot sits along the BLVD. It became part of a bar hop experience, and at first sight the bar did not seem like much but when I engaged I found that I thoroughly enjoyed its offerings both big and small. When i stepped into the restroom there was a copy of the Brother's Karamazov by Dotevschy. The moment was random but it also took me back to my High School days. I was suppose to read the book, and I did not. It is suppose to be a novel that deserves praise and acclaim, and I am sure if I read it I would have given it the flowers it deserved. But I did not. It was a thick, and confusing book, and also long. And all of these things came back to my mind when I saw the book in the bathroom. How did the book happen to be? Is it intentional or was it just a random reminder from the universe to me and others? The reminder is constructed by the beholder, just like beauty is. There was also a Dodger's bobble head in the liquor shelf. Again, I wonder how that small knickknack came to be. If I was a worker in the bar I would want to add a knickknack but it would have to be carefully selected because I would want my knickknack to communicate something unique to the world, but I guess I defy my own point when I communicated that a knickknack's purpose and value is defined by the one who sees it, and not the person who carefully selects it. The bar also has a pool table, which is good because Conrad and I usually like to play pool on our nights out. And even though there are universal rules to playing pool each place has it owns way of enforcing them, as well as interpreting them. For instance, we were not allowed to play pool as a duo. We had to play pool as an individual. But finally, a regular, allowed us to play pool as a duo. We waited for a while for the pool table. The game also costed 2.00 a game. I am used to paying a 1.00 for a game of pool. The price hike reminds us that we were in a swanky place. The beige but pretty color of the pool table reminded me of a Cuban lounge. Not sure why. But to be clear I did not smell cigars or see plants that look liked small palm trees around so the Cuban lounge vibe was contained. The wait for the pool game, and playing the game with strangers, were definitely part of the joy I discovered within. As I waited for the pool table I drank a Cosmo. I explained to bartender that I wanted my Cosmo to be sweeter than others. And he made the drink orange flavored forward, in a wondrous way, not in like an Orange Shasta kind of way. I do wonder though if the drink was still a Cosmo or an Orange cocktail in a Cosmo glass. I really appreciated the spiral rine in my Cosmo (maybe not Cosmo) drink. The place has a DJ so it encourages dancing. When we went it was a Tuesday night, I think, it was definitely a week night so the dance floor was empty. But I felt the mood, the vibe, the drinks and I danced but myself. I closed my eyes, and my eyelids felt the color of the lasers. Soon after I was joined by my buddy so I did not dance alone, yet, we did not dance together. We were just buddies dancing. The lanterns of the place were also grand! I took a picture of one from a far and one up close. And the one I took up close, is best. But again, dear reader, you get to decide that based on what your eyes and soul see. But the lanterns add a quite elegance, kind of like Wicker Furniture in a Florida home for people in their golden years. You know cause if furniture needed to be moved it is best to be made of material like Wicker. I want to go back to this spot on a weekend night. I bet then I will see the dance floor full. But this bar would be part of a bigger bar crawl night. It has enough to engage the mind, the palette, the eye and the feet. But it is not enough to be the anchor of a whole night experience. read more

Stopped in after diner at A Ti. Not bad. Vibes here are very open. Wasn't busy on a Friday. Came in and got some carajillos as it was one of the signature drinks. Now if were being a purest or very critical then they were passing at best. Not a lot of liquor but not overly sweet either. This was a younger crowd at around 20s maybe early 30s. I came here while waiting to be seated at Quarter Sheets Pizza which is literally on the same corner. This is a central location so I've passed by this bar a lot but hadn't tried it out yet. We were a little skeptical of going at first because the reviews are meh, but now having tried it, I'm not sure why the reviews are so low. Maybe it all depends when you go? When we went early evening on a Friday, the bar had a good atmosphere with enough groups around but not crowded. I love the ambiance, the interior design along with the open setup where the bar tables are open to the outdoors all felt perfect to enjoy on a nice LA day. The new expanded space and open front windows are an improvement, but the beige wicker interior design and cheap laminate bar is drab and depressing. The place has lost its soul. While the bartenders are great at what they do and manage to keep their composure during busy Dodgers game periods, the doorman is rude and borderline aggressive when approaching people. As for the drinks... Margarita:I loved it, but I love fruity drinks so if this isn't what you're looking for in a margarita, maybe go for another drink. Had a great night out this past Friday, our bartender made a delicious Hot Toddy for me since it was a cold night out, she was really cool to chat with and served with a smile. The music was excellent and the crowd was a diverse crowd of cool people just having a good time. Plenty of bar seating and a decent sized dance floor, a pool table and a great time. My girlfriend and I met some really great people and had a great time just vibing and listening to good music. No one brought drama, everyone was friendly and just looking to have a good time. This is a great neighborhood spot. There's something for everyone and the crowd is very diverse and welcoming. It's really wonderful if you're able to get one of the booths and the seating is extremely comfortable. On a nice day it's open and airy and a great place to watch the sunset. 100% got roofied here on Christmas Eve. I drink like a bandit, never puke, and hadn't even drank close to half of what I normally do and had eaten a huge dinner. I went from casual to beyond wasted in minutes. Unable to see properly, or even raise my head. My mezcal soda tasted strange too. One of my closest friends who drove me home, who's known me for close to fifteen years, said he'd never seen me that drunk before. Don't even recall how I got into my apartment and I immediately yakked horribly and passed out. The next day it was like I had never even had a drink. Zero hangover. I love the upgrade, the openness to Sunset, the energy......and I really want it to stay successful. But why oh why is each and every cocktail here absolutely TERRIBLE?!! Did the mixologist (s) burn their tastebuds off at some point in their life? I have had every cocktail here during my many visits, and each one is just OFF (to the point of tasting like stomach acid) and also watery. After a series of failed businesses; Amaro, the Holloway, and the rapidly tanking and wildly overpriced Lonely Oyster, owner Don has decided to take his only sure bet, a no-frills neighborhood dive, and make it awful. Little Joy wasn't a cocktail bar, and it's still not a cocktail bar. It used to be somewhere that you could go for a reliably cheap shot, beer or highball, but now they have a cocktail menu charging no less than $18 for a "Don Collins" (narcissist much?) making it the most expensive bar in the neighborhood. Frankly, it's a middle finger to Echo Park and the locals who patronized this establishment for years. Go to Bar Flores or Lowboy for a better cocktail that costs a fraction of price. Not to mention, the new decor looks like a Crate and Barrel magazine threw up. Don clearly has his employees competing in a review contest if you see how many of them are named in the recent five star reviews. Little Joy has changed so much over the years and even the last version was a cleaned up imitation of the version before it, but this latest renovation takes it to a whole new level -- it's really distressing and a sign of the changing neighborhood. This isn't a chill local dive bar anymore, if the $18 cocktails are any indication (most expensive drinks in Echo Park! At Little Joy for Christ's sake!). Decor looks like a Pottery Barn version of what you might see on Abbot Kinney in Venice, with the pool table left behind like a sad signifier of what the bar once was. I used to be a regular, and I won't be returning. But seeing the crowd on opening weekend, they will probably be fine. This bar just isn't for the old locals any longer, it's a damn shame. Vibes here are pretty good, been here during the day and at night. Usually has a good amount of traffic from the Sunset crawl on Friday/Saturday. I've gone here to watch football games on the projectors which was very lowkey, but I'm sure dodgers games get more of a crowd.
