I greatly appreciate the existence of this calm and serene old-timey Mexican market right at the bustling heart of Echo Park on Sunset & Alvarado. Nice that they have a parking lot, prices aren't bad and they have an amazing butcher shop that doesn't charge much at all for asada/chicken/pastor/chorizo/etc. Highly recommended if you live in Silverlake or Echo Park especially now that the 99 Cent Stores are gone. :) read more

Grabbed some of their salsa and guac at the deli. The salsa wasn't really a hit but the guac, which was sort of a mix of avocado and salsa verde was quite good. Not particularly cheap though. read more

This is a great place to find Latin spices, great prices, all types of meat. The staff is always friendly , I've been going to this place since I was a kid. It's the few Latin markets left in the Echo Park area. I highly recommend this place. read more

This place is very convenient and they have alittle bit of everything. Meet is pretty good quality of products could be fresher. One of the last spots around echopark that hasn't been gentrified or turn into a cafe for now. They do sell alchohol just a bit pricey. Overall I would recommend this place for your next BBQ. read more

Butcher + Bread | I've been coming here since a kid with my mom, back when trying out the variety of salsas with the free chips atop the butcher's counter was a thing on the weekends (not sure if it still is). To this day, we go here to order "carne ranchera ya preparada." You'll be ready for the family BBQ in no time with the 'perfectly-marinated-in-some-citrusy-concoction' meat! Also, we never leave without adding a loaf or two of bread to our cart. Pro tip: Make sure to claim the edges of the freshly baked bread before your friends or family do. Produce | Overall, the selection of essentials in this store is great. While Vons and Lassens aren't too far, it's always best to support family businesses that have been in the area long before Echo Park became gentrified. Large selection of fresh and very reasonably priced produce! Employees | The workers are always very kind. You cannot expect to walk into an ethnic store and automatically assume everybody will know English so please be reasonable. Exploring stores is always a great way to learn about what is stocked while trying to find what you're looking for. Remember to use your ingenuity to ask for help-- pull out a Google image of what you're looking for if Spanish is not your forte. Parking | Because it's LA, parking here definitely isn't the best! But one cannot blame the establishment. If you live in Echo Park, it's a whole lot more convenient to walk here; you'll also have gotten some steps in! Grilled Cheese Showcase Showdown. Minus Bob Barker, this is an event I take seriously. Thrown by one cool ass mo fo, aka Fran D here on Yelp, I've been lucky enough to get a few invites over the years and when asked to come by this past Saturday night, well, I simply couldn't show up with Velveeta (although, that can make for a pretty damn tasty grilled cheese sammy) Anyhoo, as soon as I officially confirmed for the party, my mind was buzzing with ideas. Should I go with the easy and crowd-pleasing truffle grilled cheese I went with last time or do I push my inner culinary queen self to try something all new? B, definitely B. Let's go all in and try something new. Wednesday breezed by and nada. Thursday came and went and nada. Friday popped onto the scene and after discussing it with a few friends over drinks, I was still at a loss. But then Saturday morning, it hit me. Chorizo grilled cheese sammiches! And already being on the East side that morning, Echo Park was a no brainer to score some deelish and supa tastay chorizo. I scanned some of the local markets and found this one. The directions on Yelp mobile sounded easy enough, so my food seeking copilot and I hopped in my ride and began our mission. Of course, seeing as how Yelp maps don't always get it right, we had a bitch of a time trying to find this place. Up and down Alvarado, up and down Glendale, where the hell is this place anyway? After U-turning for what we decided would be the last time, whoomp there it is, finally we found it. Upon walking in, it seemed like many a Latin market that I've been to in my day. There was the wall of cheeses featuring Queso blanco, Queso Fresco, Queso asadero and of course a variety of cheeses touting Oaxaca as their birth place which to me simply means, meltastic glory. After piling about 7 different kinds in my tote, it was off to the meat counter to see what they had. Sure enough, they offered 3 different kinds of Chorizo and I went with a pound of each of them. I then picked up some onions, a few avocados, some dried chilis, dried herbs, fresh cilantro and the bill was a whopping: $30.00. Take that Ralph's :) From there it was off to tweak and test it out in the kitchen and later when presented to the hungry grilled cheese loving masses, it was what some scientists refer to as: a hit! I'd definitely recommend this place for the Latin staples and so you don't get lost like we did, when you head East on Sunset and turn left on Alvarado, it is almost right on your left before the first side street. We drove by too fast the first time and missed it, so eyes open and you will be set! read more

Located at the intersection of Alvarado and Sunset, well technically the intersection of Elsinore and Alvarado, is El Rancho market. A medium sized grocery store catering to the Latino marketer. They have a large carniceria, and a small bakery case, a huge selection of dried chilis, a large produce section and small selections of most other grocery store items you might expect. Like most other mercados they aren't meant to have everything you might ever want, but if you want cecina, tripas, fajita marinated chicken, and a healthy look of: "hey Guero, tu entiendes donde estas? Si? OK buey, pase." anyway, when its time to stock up on my Latin market needs, El Rancho just might be the place to go. fairly inexpensive, and pretty well stocked, check it out. Parking is tight out front, but some local dude, possibly homeless, will help guide you and your subcompact into a spot like you're landing on a pitching deck of a aircraft carrier in the bay of Fundy: "power power, you're drifting left, WAVE OFF, WAVE OFF!!" read more

Came in here to get a bottle of liquor so my friends and I can pregame before entering a show nearby. I can't say much about the customer service since I didn't actually buy anything here. However, NONE OF THE WORKERS SPEAK ENGLISH. After browsing the shop for some time: Conversation 1: Me: "Hi, do you guys have vodka or any other hard liquor here?" Worker 1: "Ohh...uhh....si..." *points with finger*. Me: "Ok, thank you." *Proceeds to walk to pointed direction but can't find any alcohol* Conversation 2 (worker at the other end of the store): Me: "Hi, do you guys have any vodka or other hard liquor here?" Worker 2: "Uhhh.....no se" *face palm*. Even though they do have beer, they didn't have any vodka...which was what we were looking for. Overall cleanliness is 5/10. Depending on which section of the store you go to, there are very distinct and pungent smells. It's almost like each section of the store is its own country with its own smell. read more

o.k produce, o.k. prices [except for nescafe classico which is over $6! this is the v.g. instant coffee that does not regularly appear in mainstream grocery stores, although i've seen it at walmart.] i went here to get dried thyme, not for $3 and above a la von$ up the street. did score. also bought green onions, tinned hominy (for experimenting), and some mexican instant tomato/noodle soup for emergencies. there was an interesting array of obscure mexican crackers & cookies, but too full of additives for me. on this note, i bought some green jalapeno sauce (w/o reading the ingredients), only to find, upon arriving chez moi, that is it chock full of yellow #5 and blue #1. granted, having grown up in the sixties & seventies, i am probably already full up on these, red dye #5 etc. [remember the red tablets for checking how much plaque you had on your teeth?...], but still hew to the notion that it might make a diff to avoid them... ah well, i'll leave it by the mailboxes, i'm sure s.o. will want it. and of course they stock jarragua, which i am partial to. this store is almost directly behind american apparel, but would probably appear too 'ghetto' for the patrons of same. seven pounds of naval oranges for $.99. sounds like a deal to me. read more

Been coming here with my mom since I can remember, back in the 80's. What I love from this place is their Mexican Chorizo... it is THE BEST! Well to me anyway. I love this place! Been hitting it more often since the local cheap-produce Asian market closed. A whole bag of produce for $10 AND I don't have to fight the ridiculous lines at SuperKing? Sign me up! They've got a bakery section and every staple you need for fresh home cooking. Employees are friendly and sweet.
