One of the places I miss a lot since retiring and no longer working in LA. This was one of my favorite lunch spots as it was for the rest of the people who knew about it from work. Affordable and delicious, what more could you want? The carnitas sandwich was my go to. It's not a long bun but it is packed to the gills with meat, guacamole and a mild pico . I tried the classic Italian Sub (Bologna, Cotto Salami, Mortadella, Cheese, Mayo, Pickles & Lettuce) and the hot Pastrami with mustard & pickles. Both were tasty and reasonably prices. This place is amazing. The cutest little spot that's been here for decades. Two very cool peeps operating the cashier up front and at the sandwich counter in back. The hot roast beef sandwich reminded me of a roast beef po' boy and an Italian beef in one. I ordered one and noticed they were priced very friendly. I had a feeling I'd be back. I went back in for a second one moments later in awe waiting not long at all for another. Luckily, they're cheap enough you could try a couple but, let me tell you more about the beef. Their sandwiches are a testament to that.  As 80s kids in Atwater, we'd walk to the market, head straight to the back of the store to buy our cheap, homemade tasting $0.75 ham & cheese sandwiches for lunch. Or, pick up some butchered meat for our Mom's to make for dinner. Today, nothings changed (except I drive here now). You can still get a simple, basic lunch sandwich for a more than affordable price. My go to nowadays is the super mexican (no meat), but, the ham & cheese is still nostalgic for me. Try em all. Our favorite sandwiches are the Avocado Special, The Mexican, Ham and Cheese, and Turkey and Cheese. All are reasonably priced. Nostalgia!!! My family moved into Atwater Village from Mexico in 1919 and Vince's Market opened only 20 years later! This market has survived many changes in Atwater Village. From the nice peaceful neighborhood my dad knew in the 50's and 60's, to the more dangerous gang territory of the 80's and 90's to the rebirth of a beautiful gem in Northeast LA, Atwater Village is once again a desirable hipster neighborhood! At the corner of Atwater and Silver Lake (across the street from Atwater Elementary School) sits one of the best family owned markets/deli's you will find in the world! (Thats my opinion at least!). The original family (the Caravela's) have passed on but you still can count on Vince's to offer great sandwiches, the best Mexican chorizo in all of Los Angeles, pork during Christmas time for Mexican tamales, and tons of other items. The 50 cent Ham & Cheese sandwich is still available- at a higher price of course. That put Vince's on the map! But now that I no longer ride my bike or skateboard to get my sandwich, I prefer the hot Roast Beef on a roll! The meat is so juicy and fresh. Put that inside fresh bread and its magic. My kids like the Roast Beef or the BBQ Beef. (Another great sandwich is the Carnitas.). Just make sure you show up before 3 if you want a hot sandwich. Earlier on busy days as the meat will run out due to high demand! Hands down, if you want a quaint little deli/market, you have to stop by Vince's in Atwater Village. All she said was the amount that I owed her, paid the lady no, no thank you she just took the money. I figured maybe shes just having an off day. Went back another day, again same thing. I moved from the neighborhood years ago and on this trip back to the area to visit family I thought of Vince's. Thank heaven this place is still around! It's a non pretentious neighborhood market that after all these years of inflation and gentrification stood the test of time. I sometimes tell stories of my youth and the cheap ham and cheese sandwiches you can get (50 cents) from this small convenience store, and still being able to go back to this place is like time travelling. You can taste the nostalgia, literally. Although the prices are just slightly higher the quality remains the same. I'm going back again tomorrow. read more
