Well... Finally did it. BUT I took in backup. The Rey Rey. The biggest burrito in the metro ($26.99). Over two feet long. We did steak, but you can pick the meat option of your choice. Packed with meat, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and sour cream. Mild and hot sauce provided on the side. Great service and food as always. Truly a metro classic! The only thing I regret is not ordering a side of the hot vegetables... Kind of a big Sunday lunch, but more than that, it was a perfect father and son outing/memory! read more

If you're drawn to hole-in-the-wall (but clean) kinds of places, El Rey is your spot. I loved the building with its drive up area and small atmosphere. We had great service! The chips were okay. The salsa was pretty good. It had a lot of chili flavor to it and a slow burn that sneaks up on you. My husband had a giant burrito (not as big as the Rey Rey--but they are all huge!). And they poured the sauce on the burrito to look like the Mexican flag. Green sauce. Cheese dip. Red sauce. It was pretty neat. I'll get a picture next time! I had the flautas. They were pretty decent. I'll try something else during our next visit. The guacamole is pretty good though! And I loved both the red and green sauces! read more

Tried this place for the first time after some friends recommended the burritos. Once I saw they had tortas, I had to try one since I have not been able to find a good torta place since moving from Southern California. This place did not disappoint. The chips looked homemade and were great. The chile rellenos was one of the best ever had and the tortas was amazing. I may ask for extra meat on the torta mostly because I like a meaty torta but it was still soooo good. What made this place even better was the absolute awesome service! We've been trying to explore more options and spread our dollar around during the pandemic so El Rey was a place we decided to try after years of just driving past. Very simply, this is reheated food in a tortilla wrap. Nothing special about and is the same price (or higher) than other mexican restaurants. The only difference is the other places give you rice/beans and chips/salsa. Not here though. Gave a 2nd star because the place looked clean and they were fast. Didn't have much interaction to gauge if they were friendly or not. read more

Great place. Manager/owner greeted us immediately. They had just opened for the day. He made us fresh coffee, it was delicious. My wife and I had the Mexicana breakfast burrito. I randomly came here while visiting the Des Moines area: I originally wanted to go to the nearby Northern Lights pizza but they didn't allow dine-in. I got the lunch special beef enchiladas, which comes w/ rice and beans. Every order also comes w/ a free small basket of chips (I was alone so I had it all to myself). It was pretty good, but the best part was, surprisingly, the beans. I liked them more than the salsa so I actually ate the chips while dipping them in the beans. They also brought me 2 bottles of sauce: one hot and one mild. I enjoyed the hot one (and didn't even try the mild one), and was satisfied by its level of spiciness. The server was also really nice, asking me multiple times while eating how good the meal was. read more

We go to El Ray at once per month and more often 2 or more times. I usually get our super burritos to go and while I am waiting I ask for some chips and salsa and gobble them down because I am usually starving. If you eat in you are given chips. The owner is always so reluctant to give me these and gives me very few chips. He always asks if I want hot or mild sauce for our burritos and I tell him neither I like to use the salsa on my burrito and generally he will give me a larger to go cup of salsa or a couple smaller cups. A regular burrito is fairly large and one little small cup does not cover it all. One small cup barely covers half of the burrito and usually my last bite doesn't have any salsa on it. So today I check the bag before I leave and I have one small cup of salsa so I walk up to the counter and ask for another and he says "next time there will be a charge for that" What an absolute cheapskate. He already has a policy that you only get one basket of chips and have to pay for any others. ALL Mexican restaurants I go to offer unlimited chips and you don't even have to ask they just bring them. I am already declining the hot or mild sauce and merely want the salsa as a replacement! This gentleman is never friendly and there is no such thing as friendly chit chat with him. He just acts so miserable. I called in after I left and asked if I misunderstood and he said no, we will charge for it. I mentioned that we come a lot and I will not come if this is his new policy. HE SAID FINE, THAT IS OKAY. They were not busy at all today (3 customers and myself) around lunch and it has been the same way lately when I go in. The attitude I got was I was NOT at all a valued customer. At the rate he is going we will have to pay to sit down. I spent $28.97 for 2 super burritos so they are not cheap and I get treated like this. I am so disappointed in this owner and I hope someone can suggest a good Mexican restaurant and I am sure they are out there. Makes me mad because we have followed El Ray to three different locations. HUM!! read more

Update. Had another great lunch. Chimichanga with chicken. Always the cleanest Resteraunt that I go to. A nice local business. El Rey Burritos has very good authentic Mexican food. I had the lunch chimichanga with rice and beans and it was very tasty. I would recommend trying this restaurant to anybody that would like good service and a clean restaurant and easy to get to. read more

Ordered the Beef Torta, it was ok, but I wouldn't order it again. Maybe I should have ordered the burrito. My son did order the Chimichunga and he enjoyed it immensely, the side of Guac was my favorite part of the meal. The Guac was really good and I would go back just for that. The place is small, nothing fancy, but clean and bright. Service was good, I might try this place again, but maybe I need a recommendation on what to order. read more

I have had the chorizo breakfast burrito and I will say it is one of the best ones I've had. I have scoured the states (mainly CA) and this competes with them all! Definitely the best in Des Moines that I have found. I can't wait to go back to try other items on the menu! read more

My michelada was excellent, definitely best I have had since arriving in Des Moines. My wife loved her fajita (I thought it was a tiny bit bland but no matter). My carne al pastor was good (perhaps a tiny bit under-seasoned as well) but was a good meal and I was very happy with the food overall. Next time I will get something like the camerones diabla to see if they are actually spicy since my biggest issue with DSM Mexican food is how hard it is to find a genuinely spicy dish. The one issue I had (besides the guy at the next table loudly declaring that it was Obama's fault he got fired {certainly not the restaurant's fault}) was that there was just too many pop-bys from the staff checking in. I appreciate that the staff is simply trying to be attentive but between the two waitresses, the manager, and the busser/expo (not sure her official role) I think we were asked how things were approximately 6-7 times over a pretty brief dinner. At some point when you are asked if everything is ok that many times you start wondering "what is going on that the staff knows but I don't that makes them so extraordinarily concerned about our happiness with the food?" I imagine the issue was simply that the restaurant was overstaffed for the number of employees so we just got doted on a bit more but it can be a bit off-putting. Anyhoo, I anticipate going back again and will definitely get another michelada when I do. read more

This is a great place to get Mexican food. There steak is cute so perfectly there is no fat in the meat. The saved that they have are mad at the perfect texture it not chunky. I had horchata and I thinks it is the best I have ever had and I have a had a lot. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. In an unassuming former takeout pizza joint El Rey is a surprising find. It has limited seating and the ambiance is, well, expected with 2 tvs going. The menu contains the typical Mexican fair with a few unique items. I had the chicken enchiladas while my companion has the nachos. Both were fine and reasonably priced. I also tried the house margarita which was surprisingly outstanding. Is it worth a drive across town? Probably not but if you are in the area and looking for a quick bite of Mexican then this is more than acceptable. read more

LOVE El Rey. The best burritos I've ever had, anywhere. As I've written in other reviews when they were in different locations, you come here for the burritos. I do like other menu items, but I want to reiterate that they absolute crush it with BURRITOS. Understood, did I make myself clear? I order a steak burrito with everything, and I also get a side of the pickled jalepenos (which includes carrots, onions, and occasionally a tiny bit of cauliflower, maybe garlic too, and this is spicy in a vinegar-ey way, if that makes sense). Use liberal amounts of the salsa verde, and you'll be happy too. VERY nice staff as well. Great people running a great business. read more

This is probably what the locals in West Des Moines think is good Mexican. Coming from Phoenix, I can tell you it's not. If you're drunk and need something to soak up the suds, then yes, this will do. But so would a package of Doritos. Burritos are supposed to have more in them than just cheese and meat but that's all that was in it, and the beef tongue was cut in such a fine dice that I'm not even sure it was lengua. The rice was bland and overcooked. Both are 6-inch tortillas. The salsa verde others raved about is - get this - Herdez salsa verde. And if it isn't, I'd be surprised to learn how it's such a copycat version to be considered original. Seriously disappointed but don't care. Shouldn't be surprised that Iowa doesn't know good Mexican food. read more

Awesome burrito. Not Tex Mex like most places. If you are a little hungrier get the Super El Rey sized burrito it is just right. Salsa is no good and I think is canned but burrito more than makes up for it. Love their hot sauce too! read more
